Our History

In the year of 1926, a meeting was held by a small group of Ukrainian families for the purpose of organizing an Orthodox parish.  The first liturgies were celebrated in the Ukrainian National Home.  In the summer of 1926, the newly-founded parish began to function under the name of St. John the Baptist.  In August of 1928 it was unanimously decided to build our first church and rectory.

Through contracting problems, bankruptcy and the stock market crash, our church founders stuck together and often used their own savings to complete their vision. In October 1930 the church and rectory were consecrated and became our place of worship.

As membership grew, a religious education program for children began.  In 1953 the Memorial Center was erected, and a new rectory was completed in 1954.  Through the hard work of the faithful, our beautiful Memorial Center was dedicated soon after.  The current church and rectory were dedicated in 1969 and 1977 respectively.  More information is documented, with great detail, in our commemorative book: “History of St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1926-1982.”

We invite you to become part of our family!  May God Bless You!
