Propers for December 22, 2024
Dec. 22 – 26th Sunday after Pentecost. Tone 1
The Conception by St. Anna of the Most Holy Theotokos. Prophetess Anna (Hannah) (1100 B.C.), mother of the Prophet Samuel. Saint Sophronios, Archbishop of Cyprus (6th C). Ven. Stephen the "New Light" of Constantinople (912).
Eph. 5:8-19; Lk. 17:12-19;
Gal. 4:22-31; Lk. 8:16-21
Tropar Resurrectional, Tone 1
When the stone had been sealed by the Jews, while the soldiers were guarding Your Most-Pure Body, You arose on the Third Day, Savior, granting Life to the world. Therefore, the Powers of Heaven cried to You Giver of Life: Glory to Your Resurrection, Christ. Glory to Your Kingdom. Glory to Your Divine Plan, only Lover of Mankind.
Tropar of the Feast, Tone 4
Today the bonds of barrenness are broken. God has heard the prayers of Joachim and Anna. He has promised them beyond all their hopes that they would bear the Maiden of God, by whom the Uncircumscribed One was to be born as a Man. He commanded an angel to cry to her: "Rejoice, Lady Full of Grace, the Lord is with you!"
Tropar of our church, Tone 4
Prophet and Forerunner of the coming of Christ,/ we who honor you with love can find no manner of praising you worthily./ For the barrenness of one who bore you / and the silence of your father have been ended by your being born of divine grace / and you have proclaimed to the world / the Incarnation of the Son of God.
Kondak Resurrectional, Tone 1
As God, You arose from the tomb in glory, raising the world with Yourself. Human nature praises You as God for death has vanished. Adam exults, Master. Eve, freed from bondage, rejoices and cries out: "You, Christ, are the Giver of Resurrection to all."
Glory …
Kondak of our church, Tone 3
She who was previously barren / now bears the Forerunner of Christ / who is the fulfillment of every prophecy. / For the prophets proclaimed beforehand / that having laid hands on Him in the Jordan, / he would be manifest as Prophet, / Preacher / and Forerunner of the Word of God.
Now and ever ...
Kondak of the Feast, Tone 4
Today all creation celebrates the conception, which was from God through Anna. She will give birth to the One who beyond all human expression gave birth to the Word of God.

Epistles
Deacon: Wisdom!
Reader: The reading is from the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians.
Deacon: Let us be attentive.
Reader: Brethren, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth, finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light." See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
Deacon: Wisdom!
Reader: The reading is from the Letter of St. Paul to the Galatians.
Deacon: Let us be attentive.
Reader: Brethren, it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar—for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children— but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written: "Rejoice, O barren, You who do not bear! Break forth and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate has many more children Than she who has a husband." Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? "Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman." So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.
Priest: Peace be with you.
Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Verse: Come let us rejoice in the Lord. Let us shout with jubilation to God our Savior.
Verse: Let us come before His Face with thanksgiving; with psalms let us shout in jubilation to Him.
Verse: The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their refuge in the time of trouble.
Communion Verse
Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the Highest. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, praise befits the upright. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Reading
From Luke 8:16-21
"No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light. "For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. "Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him." Then His mother and brothers came to Him, and could not approach Him because of the crowd. And it was told Him by some, who said, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You." But He answered and said to them, "My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it."
