Петро сказав йому: Енею! зціляє тебе Ісус Христос; встань з постелі твоєї. І він зараз же встав. І бачили його всі жителі в Лідді і Сароні, які і навернулися до Господа. В Іоппії ж була одна учениця, на ім'я Тавіфа, що значить «сарна»; вона була сповнена добрих діл і творила багато милостині. Сталося ж у ті дні, що вона занедужала й померла. Її омили і поклали в горниці. Лідда ж була поблизу Іоппії, то учні, почувши, що Петро перебуває там, послали до нього двох чоловік просити, щоб він не забарився прийти до них. Петро, вставши, пішов з ними; і коли він прийшов, завели його в горницю, і всі вдовиці із слізьми стали перед ним і показували сорочки та плаття, що їх робила Сарна, живучи з ними. Петро вислав усіх і, ставши на коліна, помолився, і, звернувшись до тіла, сказав: Тавіфо! встань. І вона відкрила очі свої і, побачивши Петра, сіла. Він подав їй руку, підвів її, і, покликавши святих і вдовиць, поставив її перед ними живою. Це стало відомим по всій Іоппії, і багато хто увірував у Господа.

Після цього було іудейське свято, і прийшов Ісус до Ієрусалима. В Ієрусалимі ж біля Овечих воріт є купальня, що по-єврейськи зветься Віфезда, яка мала п'ять критих ходів. У них лежало багато хворих, сліпих, кривих, сухих, що чекали руху води, бо Ангел Господній щороку сходив у купальню і збурював воду, і хто перший входив у неї після збурення води, той одужував, хоч би яку недугу мав. Тут був чоловік, який хворів тридцять вісім років. Ісус, побачивши, що він лежить, і знаючи, що вже довго хворіє, говорить йому: чи хочеш бути здоровим? Недужий відповів Йому: так, Господи; але чоловіка не маю, щоб, коли збуриться вода, опустив мене в купальню; коли ж я приходжу, інший вже поперед мене входить. Ісус говорить йому: встань, візьми постіль твою і ходи. І він одразу одужав, взяв постіль свою і пішов. Того дня була субота. Тому іудеї говорили зціленому: сьогодні субота, і не слід тобі було брати постіль свою. Він відповів їм: Хто зцілив мене, Той сказав мені: візьми постіль твою і ходи. Його спитали: хто Той Чоловік, Котрий сказав тобі: візьми постіль твою і ходи? А зцілений не знав, хто Він, бо Ісус зник у народі, що був на тому місці. Потім Ісус зустрів його в храмі і сказав йому: ось, ти одужав; не гріши більше, щоб з тобою не трапилось чого гіршого. Чоловік цей пішов і сказав іудеям, що Той, Хто зцілив його, є Ісус.

Spiritual Address of the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA on the Observance of Memorial Day

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On this solemn Memorial Day weekend, we gather to remember and honor the men and women who have selflessly served and sacrificed their lives in the armed forces of the United States of America. It is a day of profound reflection and deep gratitude, a day when we pause to recognize the virtues of self-sacrifice and offering that these brave souls embodied in their service to their homeland.

In the sacred tradition of Christianity, the highest form of love is that which is willing to lay down one's life for the sake of others. Our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us that "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13). Today, as we remember the fallen, we also reflect on this divine love and duty that calls individuals to serve and protect their fellow citizens, often at the ultimate cost.

Among those we honor today are the Ukrainian-Americans who have served in the armed forces of the United States. Their contributions are a testament to the enduring spirit of our community, deeply rooted in the values of freedom, duty, and sacrifice. Ukrainian-Americans have stood shoulder to shoulder with their comrades in arms, defending the sacred notion of freedom and ensuring that this cherished ideal is preserved for future generations.

At the Spiritual Center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, the national monument of the Ukrainian-American Veterans stands as a beacon of life and a symbol of freedom, hope, and love. This monument not only honors those who have served but also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of our people and our unwavering commitment to the values that underpin our great nation.

As we gather in remembrance, we also draw parallels with the struggles faced by our brethren in Ukraine. The value of freedom is profoundly understood by those who have experienced oppression and aggression. Our brothers and sisters in Ukraine continue to fight valiantly against forces that seek to undermine their sovereignty and dignity. In their struggle, we are reminded of the sacredness of human life and the inherent dignity of humanity. Their courage and resilience inspire us to uphold these values in our own lives and communities.

On this Memorial Day, we are called to respect the history of the past and to learn from it, ensuring that we do not repeat the mistakes that have led to conflict and suffering. We stand united against the evils of the present day, committed to the principles of justice, peace, and love. Let us honor the memory of the fallen by striving to build a world where freedom, dignity, and human rights are upheld for all.

As we pay tribute to those who have given their lives in service to our country, let us also recommit ourselves to the values they fought to defend. Let us embrace the virtues of self-sacrifice and offering in our own lives, seeking to serve others with love and compassion. In doing so, we honor their legacy and contribute to the realization of a world where peace and freedom prevail.

Улюблені Брати і Сестри у Христі,

У ці урочисті Дні Пам'яті ми збираємося, щоб згадати і вшанувати чоловіків та жінок, які самовіддано служили і пожертвували своїм життям у збройних силах Сполучених Штатів Америки. Цей день є днем глибокого роздуму і щирої вдячності, днем, коли ми зупиняємося, щоб усвідомити ті чесноти самопожертви і відданості, які ці хоробрі душі втілювали у своєму служінні своїй Батьківщині.

У священній традиції християнства найвищою формою любові є та, коли людина готова покласти своє життя заради інших. Наш Господь Ісус Христос навчає нас: " Ніхто більшої любови не має над ту, як хто свою душу поклав би за друзів своїх" (Івана 15:13). Сьогодні, коли ми згадуємо полеглих, ми також розмірковуємо про цю божественну любов і обов'язок, які закликають людей служити і захищати своїх співгромадян, часто за найвищу ціну.

Серед тих, кого ми сьогодні вшановуємо, є Українські Американці, які служили в збройних силах Сполучених Штатів. Їхній внесок є свідченням незламного духу нашої спільноти, глибоко вкоріненої у цінностях свободи, обов'язку та жертовності. Українські Американці стояли пліч-о-пліч зі своїми товаришами по зброї, захищаючи священну ідею свободи і забезпечуючи, щоб цей дорогоцінний ідеал свободи зберігався для майбутніх поколінь.

У Духовному Осередку Української Православної Церкви США національний пам'ятник Українсько-Американських ветеранів стоїть як маяк життя і символ свободи, надії та любові. Цей пам'ятник не тільки вшановує тих, хто служив, але й нагадує про незламний дух нашого народу і нашу непохитну відданість цінностям, які є фундаментом нашої великої нації.

Збираючись, щоб вшанувати пам'ять, ми також проводимо паралелі з боротьбою, котра спіткала наших братів в Україні. Цінність свободи глибоко розуміють ті, хто зазнав пригноблення та агресії. Наші брати і сестри в Україні продовжують відважно боротися проти сил, які прагнуть підірвати їхню суверенність і гідність. У їхній боротьбі ми згадуємо про священність людського життя і притаманну людству гідність. Їхня мужність і стійкість надихають нас підтримувати ці цінності у наших власних життях і спільнотах.

У цей День Пам'яті, ми покликані поважати історію минулого і навчатися від неї, щоб не повторювати помилок, які призводили до конфліктів і страждань. Ми об'єднані проти зла сучасності, будучи відданими принципам справедливості, миру і любові. Вшановуючи пам'ять полеглих, ми намагаємося побудувати світ, де свобода, гідність і права людини будуть дотримані для всіх.

WHY WE CELEBRATE MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day was declared a national holiday for the United States of America by an Act of Congress. This annual American Holiday was established to be celebrated on the last Monday of the month of May.

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the military men and women who died while serving our nation.

On Memorial Day, the American Flag is traditionally raised in the morning to the top of the staff and then lowered to the half-staff position where it remains until 12:00 Noon. It is then raised to the full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position is a tribute and remembers the more than 1 Million men and women who died to preserve our freedoms we have today in the United States of America. At 12:00 Noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifices be in vain but to continue the flight for liberty and justice for all.

Sacred Sites Open House at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church

Last Sunday we greeted approximately thirty-five visitors to our church as a participant in the New York Landmarks Conservancy Program, locally sponsored by PAST, the Preservation Association of the Southern Tier. We our tour guides Tammy Chebiniak, Kristi Gorick, and Carol Walling, and program coordinator Carol Wasylko for welcoming our visitors and sharing the history of our parish and our Ukrainian Orthodox Faith with all of our visitors. We also take this opportunity to thank our visitors for the heartfelt expressions of support for the people of Ukraine and donations made to our St. John's Humanitarian Fund during this time of need.

New Arrivals from Ukraine

We extend a very warm welcome to the Burdyliak Family from Ivano-Frankovsk who arrived in the United States on Sunday, May 19, 2024 under the auspices of the U.S. Government's United for Ukraine Program. Oleksandr, Ivanna, and ten-year old twins, Milana and Matvii, are happy join brother Mykhailo Burdyliak and family as they start a new chapter in their lives separated from other family members and friends in war torn Ukraine. We wish the family all of the very best as they transition into our community with the support of their sponsors, our parish members and St. John's Humanitarian Fund.

FATHER AND PANI AND MARIANNE K. LAWYRK SCHOLARSHIP

This music scholarship is offered to all St. John's members who are graduating from high school.  The scholarship is in the amount of $750.00 and all qualifying seniors are encouraged to apply.

In order to be eligible, graduating seniors must meet all of the following requirements:

1. Each applicant must currently be a member of at least one (1) musical ensemble at his/her high school.
2. Each applicant must have an academic average of at least 85% for four (4) years of high school.
3. Each applicant must have been a member of at least two (2) different performing groups sometime during his/her 4 years of high school.
4. Each applicant must be accepted at a fully accredited college or university.
5. Each applicant must demonstrate the highest character and leadership.
