Браття, ті які вірою перемагали царства, творили правду, одержували обітниці, закривали пащі левів, гасили силу вогню і уникали вістря меча, зміцнювались від немочі, були сильні на війні, проганяли полки чужинців; жінки одержували померлих своїх воскреслими; інші ж замучені були, не прийнявши визволення, щоб одержати краще воскресіння; інші зазнали наруги та побоїв, а також кайданів і темниці, були побиті камінням, перепилювані, зазнавали катування, помирали від меча, скиталися в овечих і козячих шкурах, терплячи нестатки, скорботи, озлоблення; ті, котрих весь світ не був достойний, скиталися по пустелях і горах, по печерах та ущелинах землі. Отож кожного, хто визнає Мене перед людьми, того визнаю і Я перед Отцем Моїм Небесним; а хто зречеться Мене перед людьми, зречусь того і Я перед Отцем Моїм Небесним. Хто любить батька чи матір більше, ніж Мене, недостойний Мене; і хто любить сина чи дочку більше, ніж Мене, недостойний Мене; і хто не бере хреста свого і йде слідом за Мною, той недостойний Мене. Тоді Петро, відповідаючи, сказав Йому: ось, ми залишили все і пішли слідом за Тобою; що ж нам буде? Martyrs Manuel, Sabel, and Ismael, of Persia

The Holy Martyrs Manuel, Sabel and Ismael, brothers by birth, were descended from an illustrious Persian family. Their father was a pagan, but their mother was a Christian, who baptized the children and raised them with a firm faith in Christ the Savior.

When they reached adulthood, the brothers entered military service. Representing the Persian King Alamundar, they were his emissaries in concluding a peace treaty with Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363). Julian received them with due honor and showed them his favor. However, when the brothers refused to take part in a pagan sacrifice, Julian became angry. He annulled the treaty and incarcerated the ambassadors of a foreign country like common criminals.

At the interrogation he told them that if they scorned the "gods" he worshipped, it would be impossible to reach any peace or accord between the two sides. The holy brothers answered that they were sent as emissaries of their King on matters of state, and not to argue about "gods." Seeing their firmness of faith, the Emperor ordered the brothers to be tortured.

The hands and feet of the Holy Martyrs were nailed to trees. Later, they drove iron spikes into their heads, and wedged sharp splinters under their fingernails and toenails. During their torments, the Saints glorified God and prayed as though they did not feel the tortures.

Finally, the Holy Martyrs were beheaded, and Julian ordered their bodies to be burned. Suddenly, there was an earthquake. The ground opened up and the bodies of the Saints disappeared into the abyss. After Christians prayed fervently for two days, the earth gave up the bodies of the holy brothers, from which a sweet fragrance issued forth. Many of the pagans who had witnessed the miracle, came to believe in Christ and were baptized. This was in the year 362.

Christians reverently buried the bodies of the Holy Martyrs Manuel, Sabel and Ismael. Since that time the relics of the Holy Passion-Bearers have been glorified with miracles.

The following year, when he heard about the murder of his emissaries, and that Julian was marching against him with a vast army, the Persian King Alamundar mustered his army and started for the border of his domain. The Persians vanquished the Greeks in a great battle.

At this time, Saint Basil the Great (January 1) was praying before an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, upon which Saint Merkourios (November 24) was depicted as a soldier holding a spear. He asked God not to allow Emperor Julian to return from his war against the Persians, and resume his oppression of Christians. Suddenly, the image of the Holy Great Martyr Merkourios on the icon, next to the image of the Most Holy Theotokos, became invisible. Later, the image of Saint Merkourios reappeared with a bloodied spear.

As it happened, Julian was wounded by the spear of an unknown soldier, who disappeared. As he lay dying, the mortally wounded Julian cried out, "Thou hast conquered, O Galilean!"

The solemn commemoration of these saints is very ancient. In 395, thirty-three years after their death, Emperor Theodosios the Great built a church in honor of the Holy Martyrs at Constantinople, and Hieromonk Germanos (May 12), who later became the Patriarch of Constantinople, composed a Canon in honor of the holy brothers.

Святі мученики Мануїл, Савел та Ісмаїл, рідні брати, походили зі знатного перського роду. Батько їхній був язичником, мати, християнка, хрестила дітей і виховала їх у твердій вірі в Христа Спасителя. Подорослішавши, брати вступили на військову службу. Як посли перського царя Аламундара вони були послані для укладення мирного договору з імператором Юліаном Відступником (361-363). Юліан прийняв їх з належною честю і виявляв прихильність. Але коли брати відмовилися взяти участь у язичницькому жертвопринесенні, розгніваний Юліан, порушивши закон, ув'язнив мирних посланців чужої країни в темницю, як злочинців. На допиті він сказав їм, що, якщо вони зневажають богів, яких вони шанують, то не можна досягти між країнами ні злагоди, ні миру. Святі брати відповідали, що вони послані своїм царем із державним дорученням, а не для того, щоб розмірковувати про богів. Бачачи твердість віри святих братів, імператор велів піддати їх жорстоким мукам. Святих мучеників підвісили, прицвяхавши руки і ноги до дерева, у голови встромили цвяхи, а під нігті рук і ніг вбили гострі спиці. Під час катувань святі воїни, ніби не відчуваючи мук, славили Бога і молилися. Нарешті, святим мученикам відтяли голови мечами. Тіла їхні Юліан наказав спалити, але раптово стався землетрус, земля розверзлася і прийняла у свої надра тіла святих мучеників. Через два дні, після старанної молитви християн, земля повернула тіла святих братів, від яких виходили пахощі. Багато язичників, які стали свідками чуда, що сталося, увірували в Христа і хрестилися. Християни з честю поховали мощі святих мучеників – братів Мануїла, Савела та Ісмаїла. Це сталося 362 року. З цього часу мощі святих страстотерпців прославилися чудотворіннями.

Дізнавшись про вбивство своїх послів і про те, що законозлочинець Юліан із численними військами йде проти нього, цар Аламундар зібрав військо і став на кордоні своїх володінь. У великому бою перси здолали греків. Юліан Відступник був убитий святим великомучеником Меркурієм (відомості вміщено 24 листопада).

Через 30 років благочестивий імператор Феодосій Великий († 395) побудував у Константинополі храм на честь святих мучеників, а святитель Герман, патріарх Константинопольський (пам'ять 12 травня), будучи ще єромонахом, написав на пам'ять і похвалу святим братам канон.

Преподобні Юлій пресвітер і Юліан диякон, рідні брати, були уродженцями Мірмідонії. За доброчесне життя святий Юлій був висвячений на священника, а його брат – у сан диякона. Рухомі ревністю до поширення християнської віри, святі брати отримали дозвіл на будівництво церков і вирушили на проповідь у глухі місця Сходу і Заходу Римської імперії, де ще існували ідольські капища і здійснювалися жертвоприношення кумирам. Пройшовши кілька країн, вони навернули до християнства багатьох язичників, переконуючи їх не тільки словом, а й численними чудесами. У Константинополі вони звернулися до благочестивого імператора Феодосія Молодшого (408-450) з проханням споруджувати храми на місці язичницьких капищ.

Отримавши благословення патріарха і дозвіл імператора, святі брати побудували багато храмів. Населення вважало своїм обов'язком допомагати їм у цій святій справі. Одного разу якісь люди проїжджали повз споруджувану церкву. Побоюючись, що їх почнуть умовляти взяти участь у роботі, вони пішли на обман, щоб швидше минути це місце. Один із них прикинувся мертвим і, коли святий Юлій запросив їх узяти участь у праці, вони відговорилися тим, що везуть ховати мерця. Святий запитав: "Чи не брешете ви, чада?" Проїжджі стояли на своєму. Тоді преподобний Юліан сказав їм: "Так нехай же буде вам за словом вашим". Від'їхавши на деяку відстань, вони побачили, що уявний мрець дійсно помер. Ніхто більше не смів брехати святим братам. Передбачаючи швидку кончину, святий Юлій вирушив на пошуки місця для побудови сотої за рахунком церкви, яку він вважав останньою. Дійшовши до озера Мукорос, він побачив на середині його красивий острів. Через величезну кількість змій, що плодилися на ньому, ніхто не міг там оселитися. Преподобний Юлій вирішив побудувати на цьому острові церкву. Помолившись, він, як на човні, приплив до острова на своїй мантії і поставив на ньому хрест. Іменем Божим святий подвижник наказав усім зміям зібратися до нього і повелів піти з острова, надавши його для дому Божого і рабів Христових. Усі отруйні гади поповзли в озеро і, перепливши його, влаштувалися на горі Камункін.

Святий Юлій заклав на острові церкву на честь святих Дванадцяти Апостолів. У цей час його брат, святий Юліан, закінчив будівництво церкви біля міста Гавдіана і вирішив влаштувати при церкві гробницю для свого брата Юлія. Преподобний Юлій відвідав свого брата і під час зустрічі радив йому поспішати з будівництвом гробниці, пророчо пророкувавши, що йому ж належить лежати в ній. Дійсно, святий Юліан диякон незабаром помер і був похований у побудованій ним гробниці. Преподобний Юлій пресвітер з честю здійснив поховання брата і повернувся на острів, де незабаром преставився і був похований у створеній ним церкві Дванадцяти Апостолів. Від його гробу багато хворих отримували зцілення. Блаженна кончина святих братів настала в першій половині V століття.

Saint Julius, Presbyter of Novara, and his brother, Saint Julian the Deacon

Saints Julius the presbyter and Julian the Deacon, brothers by birth, were natives of Myrmidonia. For his virtuous life Saint Julius was ordained to the priesthood, and his brother as a deacon. Inspired with zeal for the spreading of the Christian Faith, the holy brothers received permission for the building of churches and set off preaching to remote sections East and West within the Roman Empire, where pagan temples still existed and where offering of sacrifice to idols was still made. Visiting several lands, they converted many pagans to Christianity, persuading them not only by word, but also by numerous miracles. At Constantinople they turned to the pious emperor Theodosius the Younger (408-450) requesting permission to build churches upon the sites of pagan temples.

Having received the blessing of the patriarch and the permission of the emperor, the holy brothers built many churches. The people considered it their duty to assist them in this matter. Once, some people went past a church under construction. Fearing that they would be talked into taking part in this work, they engaged in a deception, in order to get away. One of them feigned being dead, and when Saint Julius invited them to take part in the work, they excused themselves, saying that they had to bury a dead person. The saint asked, "You're not lying, are you?" The passers-by persisted in their ruse. Then Saint Julian said to them, "Let it be according to your words." Having continued on farther, they discovered that the one pretending to be dead really was dead. After this, no one else dared to lie to the holy brothers.

Foreseeing his own impending end, Saint Julius set off in search of a place to build his one hundredth church, which he believed would be his last. Reaching Lake Mukoros, he saw a beautiful island. Because of the huge quantity of snakes on it, no one was able to settle there. Saint Julius decided to build a church upon this island. Having prayed, he sailed off to the island on his mantle as though on a boat, and set up a cross on it. In the Name of God, the holy ascetic ordered all the snakes to gather together and leave the island. All the venomous vipers slithered into the lake and re-established themselves upon Mount Kamunkin.

On the island Saint Julius built a church in honor of the holy Twelve Apostles. At this time his brother, Saint Julian, finished construction on a church near the city of Gaudiana and decided to build a crypt for his brother Julius by the church. Saint Julius paid his brother a visit and advised him to hurry with the construction of the crypt, prophetically foretelling that he would lie in it. Indeed, Saint Julian the Deacon soon died and was buried in the crypt built by him. Saint Julius the Presbyter reverently buried his brother and returned to the island, where he soon died and was buried in the church of the Twelve Apostles he had built. From his grave many of the sick received healing. The blessed end of the holy brothers occurred after the first half of the fifth century.

She also was a Grace Ross Shanley Fellow at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk for the last two years. She will be attending college at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where she will major in Communications Design.

•   BAKE SALE: Please make and bake your fabulous "Specialties" for our bake sale. Please drop off Friday (best - kitchen doors will be open) or Saturday by 9am.  Thank you bakers!!

•   BASKETS RAFFLE:  Please create your wonderful baskets for this year's Ukrainian Day Festival.  Please drop off wrapped baskets NOW through Wednesday, July 10th. Thanks so much for all you do!

•   THE SIGN-UP BOARD is waiting for you to "fill in the blanks" and spend the day working, laughing, praying and enjoying each other as "One Parish Family".  Please volunteer… this is a full work day for our Parish… try something new…honor your times… have fun!

•   SELL YOUR RAFFLE TICKETS: A great way to raise money and get your friends, family and neighbors to attend our Festival!  Please turn in your tickets, both sold and unsold,  no later than Saturday by 11am to the Raffle Booth / Baskets Raffle area.
