Statement of the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America and Diaspora on the 40th Anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Disaster

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!
Beloved clergy and faithful of the Holy Church, and all people of goodwill:
On this solemn 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, we bow our heads in prayerful remembrance before God, the Lord of life and history, Who alone holds creation in His loving providence. We recall with deep sorrow the tragic events of April 26, 1986 - an event that brought devastation to the land, suffering to countless families, and enduring consequences to the whole of humanity.
We offer fervent prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives - especially the heroic first responders, firefighters, engineers, and workers who, at the cost of their own health and lives, sought to contain the catastrophe and protect others. Their sacrifice stands as a solemn witness to selfless love, echoing the words of our Lord: "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends" (John 15:13).
We also remember with compassion and unwavering prayer those who have lived - and continue to live - with the physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences of this tragedy: the displaced, the sick, the forgotten, and the generations marked by its unseen wounds. May the healing grace of Christ, the Physician of souls and bodies, be upon them.
As we reflect upon this anniversary, we are called not only to remembrance, but to spiritual discernment. The Chornobyl disaster stands as a sobering reminder of the immense responsibility entrusted to humanity. From the very beginning, in the Garden of Eden, God granted humankind stewardship over creation - not domination for selfish ends, but care, reverence, and accountability. The gifts of knowledge, science, and technological advancement are blessings from God, given for the flourishing and protection of life. Yet, when divorced from humility, moral responsibility, and reverence for the Creator, these gifts may become instruments of destruction.
Nuclear power, like all human achievement, carries within it both promise and peril. It is not the knowledge itself that is evil, but the misuse, neglect, and abuse of that knowledge - when human pride, haste, or indifference obscure the sacred responsibility we bear. The tragedy of Chornobyl reveals what can occur when vigilance fails, when truth is obscured, and when the well-being of humanity is overshadowed by other pursuits.
Today, as nuclear power and its potential - both for energy and for destruction - remain in the spotlight of global society, we are called to renewed vigilance. We must advocate for transparency, responsibility, ethical governance, and the sanctity of human life. We must insist that all scientific and technological endeavors be guided by moral clarity, spiritual wisdom, and a profound respect for the dignity of every human person and the integrity of God's creation.
The journey of humanity - from Eden to Gethsemane - is indeed a journey of trust and consequences. In Gethsemane, we behold the ultimate obedience of Christ, Who freely accepted suffering out of love, redeeming the failures of humanity. In His Resurrection, we are given hope that even the darkest tragedies may be illumined by divine grace.
We prayerfully ask the clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America and Diaspora, together with our parish communities, to offer Memorial Prayer Services (Panakhyda) on Sunday, April 26, 2026, in solemn remembrance of all those who lost their lives as a result of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, as well as for all who continue to suffer from its consequences. Let these prayers of the Church rise as a living testimony of our love, our gratitude for the sacrifice of the fallen, and our enduring commitment to commend their souls into the hands of our merciful and loving God.
Therefore, in the light of the Bright Resurrection of our Lord, we do not despair. Instead, we commit ourselves anew to the path of repentance, responsibility, and transformation. We are called to be stewards who protect rather than exploit, who heal rather than harm, and who build a future rooted in truth, justice, and love.
On this anniversary, we call upon our faithful to: offer prayers for the departed and for all who suffer from the consequences of Chornobyl; reflect deeply on our personal and collective responsibility toward God's creation; support efforts that promote environmental stewardship, ethical scientific advancement, and the protection of human life; bear witness to the Gospel by living lives of humility, vigilance, and love.
May the memory of the victims be eternal. May the sacrifices of the heroes never be forgotten. And may the Lord grant wisdom to the leaders of nations, scientists, and all entrusted with great responsibility, that the gifts of knowledge may always serve life and never destruction.
With archpastoral love in the Risen Christ, we entrust all to His mercy and proclaim:

Христос Воскрес! Воістину Воскрес!
Дорогі у Христі священнослужителі та вірні Святої Церкви та всі люди доброї волі!
У ці скорботні 40-ві роковини Чорнобильської ядерної катастрофи ми схиляємо свої голови в молитовній пам'яті перед Богом - Господом життя і історії, Який один утримує творіння у Своєму люблячому промислі. З глибоким болем пригадуємо трагічні події 26 квітня 1986 року - подію, що принесла спустошення землі, страждання безлічі родин і довготривалі наслідки для всього людства.
Підносимо щирі молитви за душі тих, хто втратив своє життя - особливо за героїчних перших рятувальників, пожежників, інженерів і працівників, які ціною власного здоров'я і життя намагалися зупинити катастрофу та захистити інших. Їхня жертва є величним свідченням жертовної любові, що відлунює слова нашого Господа: «Ніхто більшої любові не має над ту, як хто душу свою покладе за друзів своїх» (Ін. 15:13).
Зі співчуттям і невпинною молитвою згадуємо також тих, хто жив і продовжує жити з фізичними, емоційними та духовними наслідками цієї трагедії: переселенців, хворих, забутих і цілі покоління, позначені її невидимими ранами. Нехай цілюща благодать Христа - Лікаря душ і тіл - перебуває з ними.
Роздумуючи над цією річницею, ми покликані не лише до пам'яті, але й до духовного розпізнавання. Чорнобильська трагедія є суворим нагадуванням про величезну відповідальність, довірену людству. Від самого початку, у Райському саду, Бог доручив людині піклування про творіння - не для егоїстичного панування, але для турботи, благоговіння і відповідальності. Дар знання, науки і технологічного розвитку є благословенням від Бога, даним для процвітання і захисту життя. Однак, коли ці дари відокремлюються від смирення, моральної відповідальності і пошани до Творця, вони можуть стати знаряддям руйнування.
Ядерна енергія, як і будь-яке людське досягнення, містить у собі як можливість, так і небезпеку. Не саме знання є злом, але його зловживання, недбалість і спотворення - коли людська гординя, поспіх чи байдужість затьмарюють ту святу відповідальність, яку ми несемо. Трагедія Чорнобиля показує, що стається тоді, коли втрачається пильність, коли істина приховується, а добробут людства відходить на другий план.
Сьогодні, коли ядерна енергія та її потенціал - як для творення, так і для руйнування - залишаються в центрі уваги сучасного світу, ми покликані до оновленої пильності. Ми повинні відстоювати прозорість, відповідальність, етичну опіку та святість людського життя. Ми повинні наполягати, щоб усі наукові й технологічні досягнення керувалися моральною ясністю, духовною мудрістю та глибокою повагою до гідності кожної людини і цілісності Божого творіння.
Шлях людства - від Едему до Гетсиманії - є шляхом довіри і наслідків. У Гетсиманії ми бачимо досконалий послух Христа, Який добровільно прийняв страждання з любові, викупляючи падіння людства. У Його Воскресінні нам дарується надія, що навіть найтемніші трагедії можуть бути просвітлені Божою благодаттю.
Крім того, ми звертаємося до духовенства Української Православної Церкви Сполучених Штатів Америки та Діаспори разом із нашими парафіяльними громадами із закликом звершити поминальні богослужіння (Панахиди) у неділю, 26 квітня 2026 року, у молитовну пам'ять про всіх, хто загинув внаслідок Чорнобильської ядерної катастрофи, а також за тих, хто й надалі страждає від її наслідків. Нехай ці молитви Церкви підносяться як живе свідчення нашої любові, вдячності за жертву полеглих і нашого постійного прагнення віддати їхні душі в руки милосердного і люблячого Бога.
Тому, у світлі Світлого Воскресіння нашого Господа, ми не впадаємо у відчай. Натомість оновлюємо своє покликання до покаяння, відповідальності та преображення. Ми покликані бути управителями, які захищають, а не зловживають; зцілюють, а не руйнують; будують майбутнє, основане на правді, справедливості та любові.
У цей день ми закликаємо наших вірних: підносити молитви за спочилих і за всіх, хто страждає від наслідків Чорнобиля; глибоко замислитися над нашою особистою і спільною відповідальністю за Боже творіння; підтримувати зусилля, спрямовані на збереження довкілля, етичний розвиток науки та захист людського життя; свідчити Євангеліє своїм життям у смиренні, пильності та любові.
Нехай пам'ять жертв буде вічною. Нехай жертва героїв ніколи не буде забута. І нехай Господь дарує мудрість провідникам народів, науковцям і всім, кому довірена велика відповідальність, щоб дар знання завжди служив життю, а не руйнуванню.
З архіпастирською любов'ю у Воскреслому Христі ввіряємо всіх Його милосердю і проголошуємо:

Shining Lights Memorial Scholarship (formerly LSSK)
Recipients of the Shining Lights Memorial Scholarship are selected based upon the following criteria:
a) A Junior UOL member in good standing; a past Junior UOL member enrolled in or about to enter a program of advanced education but not beyond five (5) years from high school graduation.
b) A record of outstanding performance in the service to the Ukrainian Orthodox League and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church;
c) Academic performance in high school.
d) Involvement in extracurricular and civic activities.
e) Be of high ethical and moral character.
Scholarship applications are due to the Shining Lights Scholarship Chair by May 31st of each year or at a publicized date of their choosing.

- Lunch served afterwards - Yum!
There are many ways to help!! Please consider attending and making the work light and easy for all. We need help both in the kitchen and with pinching… school-age runners too!

If you are unable to attend, please consider a donation towards the lunch expenses.
We do need a volunteer to handle the lunch for the session too.

It is time for our new parish directory. It has been 10 years since we created our last directory and it will not be complete without you. We have scheduled May 19th 2 pm – 8:30 pm for your portraits to be taken at the Memorial Center. Each participant will receive a free 8x10 portrait and directory. You will have the opportunity to purchase additional portraits to share with family and friends. Universal Church Directories offers you a variety of poses, backgrounds, portrait sizes, finishes and framing options for you.
Please sign up for your professional photography session on the schedule in church. If you cannot be present for a portrait, you may submit a digital photo to me at pamelascannell@gmail.com. Please keep in mind to save after school times for families, so if you have the flexibility to sign up at the earlier times that would be appreciated.
Individual family portraits are the perfect time to capture memories. If you want a multi-generational photo, it is a great way to include extended family. The sessions are scheduled every 12 minutes so there is no time for wardrobe changes. Please allow 40-50 minutes to get photographed and decide on photos to purchase with options for different backgrounds etc.
