Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon

The holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon was born in Bithynia (Asia Minor), in the city of Nicomedia, into the family of the illustrious pagan Eustorgius, and was named Pantoleon (meaning "a lion in all things"), for his parents wished to see him grow into a brave and fearless young man. His mother, Saint Eubula, raised the boy in the Christian faith, but her earthly life ended early. His father then sent Pantoleon to a pagan grammar school, and afterward had him trained in the art of medicine by Euphrosynus, a physician renowned in Nicomedia.

Distinguished by his eloquence, good conduct, and unusual beauty, the young Pantoleon was presented to the Emperor Maximian (284–305), who wished to keep him at his court and eventually make him his personal physician.

At that time the holy priest-martyrs Hermolaus, Hermippus, and Hermocrates were living secretly in Nicomedia, having survived the burning of twenty thousand Christians in the church of Nicomedia in the year 303, and the sufferings of the hieromartyr Anthimus. From the window of a secluded dwelling, Saint Hermolaus repeatedly saw the handsome youth and perceived in him, with spiritual insight, a chosen vessel of God's grace.

One day the priest called Pantoleon to his refuge and, having asked him about his parents, his faith, and his whole life, began a conversation in which he set forth the essential truths of the Christian faith. "Believe me, O good youth," he said, "the true and Almighty God is one — Jesus Christ. If you believe in Him, you will heal every illness merely by calling upon His most pure name." From then on Pantoleon began coming daily to the priest-martyr Hermolaus, listening with delight to what the servant of God revealed to him about the Most Sweet Jesus Christ.

One day, on his way home from his teacher, the youth saw a dead child lying on the road, bitten by a viper that was coiling nearby. Filled with pity and compassion, Pantoleon began to pray to the Lord for the resurrection of the dead child and the death of the poisonous serpent. He firmly resolved that if his prayer were answered, he would become a Christian and receive Holy Baptism. "Lord Jesus Christ," he prayed, "though I am unworthy to call upon You, yet if You wish me to become Your servant, show forth Your power, and grant that in Your name this child may live again, and that the viper may die!" And through the action of divine grace, the child came back to life, while the viper burst apart before the astonished eyes of Pantoleon.

After this miracle, Saint Hermolaus baptized the youth in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, celebrated the Divine Liturgy, and Pantoleon partook of the Divine and Life-Giving Mysteries of the Body and Blood of Christ. The newly baptized youth spent seven days with his spirit-bearing teacher, absorbing into his heart the God-revealed truths of the Holy Gospel.

Having become a Christian, Pantoleon often spoke with his father, exposing to him the delusion of paganism and gradually preparing him to accept Christianity. During this time Pantoleon had already become known as a skilled physician, and so a blind man was brought to him whom no one else had been able to heal. "The Father of light, the true God, will restore light to your eyes," the saint told him, "in the name of my Lord Jesus Christ, who gives sight to the blind — see again!" The blind man immediately received his sight, and together with him the saint's father, Eustorgius, was spiritually enlightened as well; both joyfully received Holy Baptism.

After his father's death, Saint Pantoleon devoted his life to the suffering, the sick, the poor, and beggars. He healed all who came to him free of charge, visited prisoners in dungeons, and cured the suffering not so much by medical means as by calling upon the Lord Jesus Christ. "My all-healing power and glory is Christ, the true God," he used to say.

The fame of the merciful and unmercenary physician spread throughout the whole city, and the people, abandoning all other doctors, began turning only to Saint Pantoleon. This provoked envy, and the other physicians reported to the emperor that Saint Pantoleon was a Christian and was treating Christian prisoners.

Maximian tried to persuade the saint to deny the accusation and offer sacrifice to idols, but the chosen martyr of Christ and gracious physician confessed himself a Christian and, before the emperor's own eyes, healed a paralyzed man: "In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, rise and be well," said Saint Pantoleon — and the sick man was instantly restored.

Enraged, Maximian ordered the healed man executed, and gave Saint Pantoleon over to the most brutal tortures. "Lord Jesus Christ! Stand before me in this hour, give me patience, that I may endure the torments to the end!" the saint prayed, and heard a voice: "Fear not, I am with you." The Lord appeared to him "in the form of the priest Hermolaus" and strengthened him before his sufferings.

The great martyr Pantoleon was hung upon a tree and his flesh torn with iron hooks, burned with candles, stretched upon a wheel, thrown into boiling lead, and cast into the sea with a stone about his neck. Yet through all these torments the courageous Pantoleon remained unharmed and boldly exposed the emperor. The Lord repeatedly appeared to the saint and strengthened him. At this same time the priests Hermolaus, Hermippus, and Hermocrates stood trial before the pagans. They bravely confessed the Most Sweet Lord Jesus and were beheaded.

By order of the emperor, the holy great martyr Pantoleon was brought to the circus and thrown to be torn apart by wild beasts. But the beasts licked his feet and pushed one another aside, each trying to touch the saint's hand. Seeing this, the spectators rose from their seats and began to cry out: "Great is the God of the Christians! Let the innocent and righteous youth be set free!" The furious Maximian ordered his soldiers to cut down with swords all who glorified the Lord Jesus, and even to kill the beasts that had not touched the holy martyr. Seeing this, Saint Pantoleon exclaimed: "Glory to You, Christ God, that not only men but even beasts die for Your sake!"

At last Maximian, driven mad with rage, ordered the great martyr Pantoleon beheaded. The soldiers led the saint to the place of execution and bound him to an olive tree. As the great martyr began to pray to the Lord, one of the soldiers struck him with a sword, but the sword became soft as wax and inflicted no wound at all. Astonished by the miracle, the soldiers cried out: "Great is the God of the Christians!" At that moment the Lord revealed Himself once more to the saint, calling him Panteleimon (meaning "all-merciful") instead of his former name Pantoleon, because of his great mercy and compassion.

Hearing the voice from Heaven, the soldiers fell on their knees before the martyr and begged forgiveness. The executioners refused to carry out the sentence, but the great martyr Panteleimon himself urged them to fulfill the emperor's order. "If you do not do what has been commanded of you," he said, "you will not receive mercy from my Christ!" Then the soldiers, weeping, bade farewell to the great martyr, kissing his hand.

When the martyr's head was struck off, many people came to believe in Christ Jesus. The body of Saint Panteleimon, thrown into a fire, remained unharmed, and the Nicomedian passion-bearer was buried by Christians on nearby land belonging to the scholastic Adamantius.

Laurence, Vassos, and Provian, servants of the great martyr, witnessed his sufferings and heard the voice from Heaven. They wrote an account of his life, sufferings, and death.

The memory of Saint Panteleimon has long been honored by the Orthodox East. Already in the fourth century, churches were built in his name in Sebastia of Armenia and in Constantinople.

Святий великомученик і цілитель Пантелеймон народився у Віфінії (Мала Азія) у місті Нікомідія в родині знатного язичника Євсторгія і був названий Пантолеоном (що значить «у всьому лев»), адже батьки хотіли бачити його мужнім і безстрашним юнаком. Мати, свята Єввула, виховувала хлопчика в християнській вірі, але рано закінчила своє земне життя. Тоді батько віддав Пантолеона до язичницької граматичної школи, а потім навчав його медичного мистецтва у знаменитого в Нікомідії лікаря Євфросина.

Вирізняючись красномовством, гарною поведінкою й незвичайною красою, юний Пантолеон був представлений імператорові Максиміану (284–305), який захотів залишити його при своєму дворі й зробити згодом придворним лікарем.

У Нікомідії тоді таємно проживали священномученики пресвітери Єрмолай, Єрміп і Єрмократ, які вціліли після спалення двадцяти тисяч християн у Нікомідійській церкві в 303 році й страждань священномученика Анфіма. Із вікна відокремленого будиночка святий Єрмолай неодноразово бачив благовидного юнака й прозорливо провидів у ньому вибраний сосуд благодаті Божої.

Одного разу пресвітер покликав Пантолеона до свого пристановища і, розпитавши про батьків, про віру і про все його життя, почав з ним бесіду, під час якої виклав йому основні істини християнської віри. «Вір мені, о добрий юначе! — говорив він, — Істинний і Всемогутній Бог є єдиний — Ісус Христос, у Котрого якщо ти віруватимеш, то зцілятимеш будь-які хвороби самим лише прикликанням Його пречистого імені». Відтоді Пантолеон став щодня заходити до священномученика Єрмолая і з задоволенням слухав те, що відкривав йому Божий служитель про Найсолодшого Ісуса Христа.

Одного разу, повертаючись від учителя, юнак побачив мертву дитину, яка лежала на дорозі, укушена єхидною змією, котра звивалася поруч. Сповнившись жалю й співчуття, Пантолеон став просити Господа про воскресіння померлого й умертвіння отруйного гада. Він твердо вирішив, що в разі виконання його молитви стане християнином і прийме Святе Хрещення. «Господи Ісусе Христе, — молився він, — хоч я і недостойний прикликати Тебе, але якщо Ти прагнеш, аби я зробився рабом Твоїм, прояви силу Твою і зроби так, щоб в ім'я Твоє отрок цей ожив, а єхидна здохла!» І через дію Божественної благодаті дитина ожила, а єхидна розлетілася на шматки на очах здивованого Пантолеона.

Після цього чуда святий Єрмолай охрестив юнака в ім'я Отця і Сина і Святого Духа, звершив Божественну літургію, і Пантолеон причастився Божественних і Животворящих Тайн Тіла й Крові Христових. Сім днів провів новоохрещений у свого духоносного вчителя, всмоктуючи у своє серце богоодкровенні істини Святого Євангелія.

Ставши християнином, Пантолеон часто розмовляв зі своїм батьком, розкриваючи йому оману язичництва й поступово підготовляючи до прийняття християнства. У цей час Пантолеон уже був відомий як гарний лікар, тому до нього привели сліпого, котрого ніхто інший не міг зцілити. «Світло очам твоїм поверне Отець світла, Бог істинний, — сказав йому святий, — в ім'я Господа мого Ісуса Христа, Який просвіщає сліпих, прозри!» Сліпий одразу прозрів, а разом з ним духовно прозрів і батько святого — Євсторгій, і обидва з радістю прийняли Святе Хрещення.

Після смерті батька святий Пантолеон присвятив своє життя стражденним, хворим, убогим і жебракам. Він безоплатно лікував усіх, хто звертався до нього, відвідував у темницях в'язнів і зціляв стражденних не так медичними засобами, як прикликанням Господа Ісуса Христа. «Всецілюща сила моя і слава Христос є — Істинний Бог», — говорив він.

Слава про милостивого й безкорисливого лікаря поширилася всім містом, і жителі, залишивши всіх інших лікарів, стали звертатися тільки до святого Пантолеона. Це викликало заздрість, і лікарі донесли імператорові, що святий Пантолеон християнин та лікує християнських в'язнів.

Максиміан умовляв святого спростувати наклеп та принести жертву ідолам, але вибраний страстотерпець Христовий і благодатний лікар сповідав себе християнином і на очах імператора зцілив розслабленого: «В ім'я Господа Ісуса Христа, встань і будь здоровий», — мовив святий Пантолеон — і хворий негайно видужав.

Озлоблений Максиміан наказав стратити зціленого, а святого Пантолеона віддав найжорстокішим мукам. «Господи Ісусе Христе! Постань переді мною в цю хвилину, дай мені терпіння, щоб я до кінця міг винести муки!» — молився святий і почув голос: «Не бійся, Я з тобою». Господь з'явився йому «в образі пресвітера Єрмолая» і укріпив перед стражданнями.

Великомученика Пантолеона повісили на дереві й рвали тіло залізними гаками, обпалювали свічами, розтягували на колесі, кидали в кипляче олово, кидали в море з каменем на шиї. Однак у всіх катуваннях мужній Пантолеон залишався неушкодженим і з відвагою викривав імператора. Господь неодноразово являвся святому й зміцнював його. У цей же час перед судом язичників постали пресвітери Єрмолай, Єрміп і Єрмократ. Вони мужньо сповідали Найсолодшого Господа Ісуса й були обезголовлені.

За велінням імператора святого великомученика Пантолеона привели до цирку і кинули на розтерзання диким звірам. Але звірі лизали його ноги й відштовхували один одного, намагаючись торкнутися руки святого. Бачачи це, глядачі піднялися з місць і стали кричати: «Великий Бог християнський! Нехай буде відпущений неповинний і праведний юнак!» Розлючений Максиміан наказав воїнам рубати мечами всіх, хто славив Господа Ісуса, і навіть рубати звірів, які не торкнулися святого мученика. Бачачи це, святий Пантолеон викликнув: «Слава Тобі, Христе Боже, що не лише люди, а й звірі вмирають за Тебе!»

Зрештою, Максиміан, який збожеволів від люті, наказав відрубати великомученику Пантолеону голову. Воїни привели святого на місце страти й прив'язали до олійного дерева. Коли великомученик став молитися Господу, один із воїнів ударив його мечем, але меч став м'яким, як віск, і не завдав ніякої рани. Вражені дивом, воїни закричали: «Великий Бог християнський!» У цей час Господь ще раз відкрився святому, назвавши його Пантелеймоном (що значить «багатомилостивий») замість колишнього імені Пантолеон за його велике милосердя й співчуття.

Почувши голос з Неба, воїни впали на коліна перед мучеником і просили прощення. Кати відмовилися продовжувати страту, але великомученик Пантелеймон повелів виконати наказ імператора. «Якщо ви не виконаєте дорученого вам, — сказав він, — не отримаєте милості від Христа мого!» Тоді воїни зі сльозами попрощалися з великомучеником, цілуючи його руку.

Лаврентій, Вассой і Провіан, слуги великомученика, бачили його страждання й чули голос із Неба. Вони написали оповідь про життя, страждання й кончину великомученика.

Пам'ять святого Пантелеймона здавна шанується Православним Сходом. Уже в IV столітті були споруджені храми в ім'я святого в Севастії Вірменській і Константинополі.

The Chief Sickness

No other homesickness is as persistent as that for the Kingdom of heaven. Someone said, "There is only one sickness, and that is homesickness." And this strange nostalgia, this homesickness for God, is responsible for most of our sicknesses—mental, physical, and spiritual. God hunger is the worst kind of hunger, and until it is satisfied, nothing else man has or does can satisfy.

The meaning and goal of life for each one of us is to respond to this homing instinct within us and go home to God. Meister Eckert wrote, "God is at home; we are in the far country." Like the prodigal son, we have all sinned; we have all wandered away from our true home in God. We have not only lost our way; we have even lost our address. In His Love for us, God sent His own Son into the world to lead us back home. And let us remember that the prodigal son was able to find himself only when he returned home.

What makes us homesick? Basically, it is because we were made in the image of God. And the image is always attracted to the Original, the Archetype. We were made for God. When God created us in His image, He endowed us with a MIND that we may come to know Him. In addition to a mind, He gave us a HEART to desire Him, to long for Him, to crave Him and run after Him, and to be homesick for Him. "God has placed in the human heart the desire for Him," writes St. Maximus the Confessor. In addition to a mind to know Him and a heart to desire Him, God gave us as part of His image in us a FREE WILL that we may freely choose to love Him and come home to Him.

Сенс і мета життя кожного з нас — відгукнутися на цей вроджений потяг повернутися додому і піти додому до Бога. Майстер Екгарт писав: «Бог удома; ми на чужині». Як блудний син, ми всі згрішили; ми всі відійшли від нашого справжнього дому в Бозі. Ми не лише заблукали — ми навіть загубили свою адресу. У Своїй любові до нас Бог послав у світ Свого власного Сина, щоб привести нас назад додому. І пам'ятаймо, що блудний син зміг знайти себе лише тоді, коли повернувся додому.

Що ж викликає в нас цю тугу за домом? По суті, це тому, що ми були створені за образом Божим. А образ завжди притягується до Оригіналу, до Архетипу. Ми були створені для Бога. Коли Бог створив нас за Своїм образом, Він наділив нас РОЗУМОМ, щоб ми могли пізнати Його. Крім розуму, Він дав нам СЕРЦЕ, щоб прагнути Його, тужити за Ним, жадати Його і бігти за Ним, і тужити за домом до Нього. «Бог вклав у людське серце прагнення до Себе», — пише святий Максим Сповідник. Крім розуму, щоб пізнати Його, і серця, щоб прагнути Його, Бог дав нам, як частину Свого образу в нас, ВІЛЬНУ ВОЛЮ, щоб ми могли вільно обрати любити Його і повернутися додому до Нього.
