Archpastoral Letter of the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA On the Occasion of the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America

Beloved Clergy, Monastics, Seminarians, Faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA: Christ is Among Us!

As the people of the United States of America commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of our nation, we, the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, join our fellow citizens in offering heartfelt thanksgiving to Almighty God for the blessings bestowed upon this land throughout two and a half centuries of history.

This anniversary invites us to reflect not only upon the remarkable achievements of the American people but also upon the enduring principles that have guided this nation from its earliest days. The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, boldly proclaimed that all people are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These words, inspired by a profound understanding of human dignity and divine providence, have echoed throughout generations and have inspired countless people around the world who seek freedom, justice, and peace.

The history of the United States is a story of sacrifice, perseverance, and faith. It is a story written by courageous men and women who believed that liberty carries responsibility and that freedom must be safeguarded by virtue. George Washington reminded the nation that "religion and morality are indispensable supports" of political prosperity. John Adams observed that the Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. Abraham Lincoln, in one of the darkest moments of our national history, called upon Americans to remember that this nation was "under God" and dedicated to the proposition that all people are created equal.

These truths remain as relevant today as they were in the founding era. The strength of America has never rested solely upon military power, economic success, or technological achievement. Rather, it has been sustained by the moral character of its people, the vitality of its communities, and the conviction that freedom flourishes only when rooted in virtue, responsibility, and respect for the dignity of every human person.

As Orthodox Christians, we recognize that authentic freedom is not merely the absence of restraint but the ability to choose what is good, true, and holy. The Holy Apostle Paul reminds us: "For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another" (Galatians 5:13). Our democratic institutions are strengthened when citizens live lives marked by integrity, compassion, self-sacrifice, and respect for one another.

As we celebrate this historic milestone, we must also confront the challenges of our own time. We live in an age marked by polarization, social division, violence, disregard for human life, attacks upon the sanctity of marriage and family, and growing indifference toward faith and spiritual values. The future strength of our nation will depend not merely upon legislation or policy but upon the moral renewal of its people. Each generation bears the sacred responsibility of preserving the principles entrusted to us by those who came before.

Therefore, while we rightly honor the accomplishments of the past, we must not become prisoners of nostalgia. The founders of our nation did not labor and sacrifice so that future generations would simply admire their achievements. Rather, they entrusted us with the responsibility of carrying forward the ideals of liberty, justice, equality, and civic virtue. We honor their legacy best when we remain faithful to those principles and pass them on to our children and grandchildren.

For the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, this anniversary carries a particularly profound meaning. For more than a century, generations of Ukrainian immigrants and their descendants have found refuge, opportunity, and freedom upon these shores. Here they built churches, established communities, preserved their faith, and contributed immeasurably to the life of the American nation.

We are especially grateful to the United States of America for its leadership among the nations of the world and for its steadfast support of the people of Ukraine during one of the darkest periods in modern history. As Ukraine continues to endure the horrors of war, the destruction of communities, and the suffering of innocent people, the assistance provided by the American people has become a powerful witness to the values of justice, compassion, and solidarity.

The faithful of our Church, many of whom maintain deep ties to their ancestral homeland, offer heartfelt gratitude to the government and citizens of the United States for standing with the people of Ukraine in their struggle against aggression and evil. We pray that God will continue to bless all efforts that seek to restore peace, safeguard human dignity, defend freedom, and establish a just and lasting stability for the people of Ukraine and for all nations suffering from conflict.

At the same time, we recognize that the future of America and the future of the world depend upon our commitment to peace. Peace is not merely the absence of war; it is the presence of justice, reconciliation, and mutual respect. As followers of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, we are called to become peacemakers in our homes, communities, workplaces, and nation. The work of building peace begins with the transformation of the human heart through faith, repentance, and love.

As we enter the next chapter of our national history, let us pray that the United States of America may continue to serve as a beacon of hope and freedom for people throughout the world. May this nation remain faithful to its highest ideals and continue to demonstrate that democracy, human dignity, religious liberty, and respect for the rule of law are blessings worthy of preservation and protection.

We call upon the faithful of our Church and all citizens of goodwill to renew their commitment to public service, civic responsibility, and Christian witness. Let us be grateful for the sacrifices of our veterans, first responders, public servants, and all who labor for the common good. Let us strengthen our families, support our communities, care for the vulnerable, and teach future generations the values that have sustained both our nation and our faith.

With gratitude to Almighty God for the blessings of the past, with confidence in His providence for the future, and with unwavering hope in the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, we offer our prayers for the United States of America on this historic 250th Anniversary.

May God bless America! 

May God grant peace, wisdom, and righteousness to the leaders of all nations. And may the Lord guide us to remain faithful stewards of the freedoms and responsibilities entrusted to us.

Всечесному духовенству, чернецтву, семінаристам та вірним Української Православної Церкви США: Христос посеред нас!

У той час, коли народ Сполучених Штатів Америки відзначає 250-ту річницю заснування нашої держави, ми, Собор Єпископів Української Православної Церкви США, разом із нашими співгромадянами підносимо щиру подяку Всемогутньому Богові за благословення, якими Він обдаровував цю землю протягом двох із половиною століть її історії.

Ця річниця спонукає нас замислитися не лише над визначними досягненнями американського народу, але й над непохитними принципами, які провадили цю державу від самих початків її існування. Декларація незалежності, ухвалена 4 липня 1776 року, сміливо проголосила, що всі люди наділені своїм Творцем невід'ємними правами, серед яких право на життя, свободу та прагнення до щастя. Ці слова, натхненні глибоким усвідомленням людської гідності та Божого Провидіння, лунають крізь покоління та надихають безліч людей у всьому світі, які прагнуть свободи, справедливості та миру.

Історія Сполучених Штатів - це історія жертовності, наполегливості та віри. Це історія, написана мужніми чоловіками та жінками, які вірили, що свобода несе із собою відповідальність, а сама свобода повинна оберігатися чеснотою. Джордж Вашингтон нагадував нації, що «релігія і моральність є незамінними опорами» політичного процвітання. Джон Адамс зазначав, що Конституція була створена лише для морального й релігійного народу. Авраам Лінкольн, в один із найтемніших моментів нашої національної історії, закликав американців пам'ятати, що ця держава перебуває «під Богом» і заснована на переконанні, що всі люди створені рівними.

Ці істини залишаються такими ж актуальними сьогодні, як і в часи заснування держави. Сила Америки ніколи не ґрунтувалася виключно на військовій могутності, економічному успіху чи технологічних досягненнях. Вона підтримувалася моральним характером її народу, життєздатністю громад та переконанням, що свобода процвітає лише тоді, коли ґрунтується на чесноті, відповідальності та повазі до гідності кожної людини.

Як православні християни, ми усвідомлюємо, що справжня свобода - це не лише відсутність обмежень, а здатність обирати добро, істину і святість. Святий Апостол Павло нагадує нам: «До свободи покликані ви, браття; тільки щоб свобода ваша не була приводом догоджати тілу, але любов'ю служіть один одному» (Гал. 5:13). Наші демократичні інституції зміцнюються тоді, коли громадяни живуть у правді, співчутті, жертовності та взаємній повазі.

Відзначаючи цю історичну дату, ми повинні також чесно подивитися на виклики нашого часу. Ми живемо в епоху поляризації, суспільного поділу, насильства, зневаги до людського життя, посягань на святість подружжя і сім'ї та зростаючої байдужості до віри й духовних цінностей. Майбутня сила нашої держави залежатиме не лише від законів чи політичних рішень, але й від морального оновлення її народу. Кожне покоління несе священний обов'язок берегти принципи, передані нам попередниками.

Тому, належно вшановуючи досягнення минулого, ми не повинні ставати заручниками ностальгії. Засновники нашої держави трудилися і жертвували собою не для того, щоб майбутні покоління лише захоплювалися їхніми здобутками. Вони довірили нам відповідальність продовжувати ідеали свободи, справедливості, рівності та громадянської доброчесності. Найкраще ми вшановуємо їхню спадщину тоді, коли залишаємося вірними цим принципам і передаємо їх нашим дітям та онукам.

Для вірних Української Православної Церкви США ця річниця має особливе значення. Понад століття покоління українських іммігрантів та їхніх нащадків знаходили на цих берегах притулок, можливості та свободу. Тут вони будували храми, створювали громади, зберігали свою віру та робили вагомий внесок у життя американського народу.

Ми особливо вдячні Сполученим Штатам Америки за їхнє лідерство серед народів світу та непохитну підтримку народу України в один із найтемніших періодів сучасної історії. Поки Україна продовжує переживати жахіття війни, руйнування громад та страждання невинних людей, допомога американського народу стала потужним свідченням цінностей справедливості, співчуття та солідарності.

Вірні нашої Церкви, багато з яких зберігають глибокий зв'язок зі своєю історичною Батьківщиною, висловлюють щиру вдячність урядові та громадянам Сполучених Штатів за підтримку народу України в його боротьбі проти агресії та зла. Ми молимося, щоб Господь і надалі благословляв усі зусилля, спрямовані на відновлення миру, захист людської гідності, оборону свободи та утвердження справедливого й тривалого миру для України та всіх народів, які страждають від конфліктів.

Водночас ми усвідомлюємо, що майбутнє Америки та світу залежить від нашої відданості справі миру. Мир - це не лише відсутність війни; це присутність справедливості, примирення та взаємної поваги. Як послідовники Христа, ми покликані бути миротворцями у наших домівках, громадах, на робочих місцях та в суспільстві. Розбудова миру починається з преображення людського серця через віру, покаяння та любов.

Вступаючи в новий розділ історії нашої держави, молімося, щоб Сполучені Штати Америки й надалі залишалися маяком надії та свободи для народів світу. Нехай ця країна залишається вірною своїм найвищим ідеалам і продовжує свідчити, що демократія, людська гідність, релігійна свобода та повага до верховенства права є благословеннями, які варто берегти та захищати.

Закликаємо вірних нашої Церкви та всіх людей доброї волі оновити свою відданість громадському служінню, громадянській відповідальності та християнському свідченню. Будьмо вдячними за жертовність ветеранів, рятувальників, державних службовців та всіх, хто трудиться задля спільного блага. Зміцнюймо наші сім'ї, підтримуймо наші громади, дбаймо про вразливих та навчаймо майбутні покоління цінностей, які підтримували як нашу державу, так і нашу віру.

З вдячністю Всемогутньому Богові за благословення минулого, з упованням на Його Боже Провидіння в майбутньому та з непохитною надією на спасительну благодать Господа нашого Ісуса Христа, підносимо наші молитви за Сполучені Штати Америки в цю історичну 250-ту річницю.

Нехай Бог благословить Америку! Нехай Господь дарує мир, мудрість і праведність провідникам усіх народів. І нехай Він допоможе нам залишатися вірними управителями свобод і відповідальності, які були нам довірені.

Please stay after the Divine Liturgy for the meeting followed by Patron Saint celebration with lunch provided.

Please note: seating is limited, and registration is on a first come, first served basis — so don't delay in reserving your spot!

How to reserve:

Parishioners may reserve throughout the month of July, either online or in person with Lisa Ferrante or Mary Ann Klish.

Please honor your reservation, and promptly cancel if your plans change so someone else may attend.

Family members of parishioners who are not themselves current parish members are asked to pay $50 per adult and $25 per child.

Non-parishioners: Registration opens August 1, 2026, on a first come, first served basis, at $50 per adult and $25 per child.

Our Ukrainian Day Festival scheduled for Saturday, July 18th from 11am - 6pm is growing near!

PRE-FESTIVAL WORK SESSIONS are scheduled in the KITCHEN for Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 9:00am and Thursday morning at 7:30am.  TENT and HALL setups are scheduled for Wednesday starting at 5:30 pm.  BAKE SALE prep is scheduled for Friday at 3:00pm. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

BAKE SALE: Please make and bake your fabulous "Specialties" for our bake sale. Please drop off FRIDAY-BEST or Saturday by 9am.  Thank you bakers!!

BASKETS RAFFLE:  Please create your wonderful baskets for this year's Ukrainian Day Festival.  Please drop off wrapped baskets NOW through Wednesday, July 15th. Thanks so much for your creativity!  We have the BEST baskets of any local festival!

THE SIGN-UP BOARD is waiting for you to "fill in the blanks" and spend the day working, laughing, praying and enjoying each other as "One Parish Family".  Please volunteer… this is a FULL WORK DAY for our Parish… try something new…honor your times… have fun!

SELL YOUR RAFFLE TICKETS: A great way to raise money and get your friends, family and neighbors to attend our Festival!  Please turn in your tickets, both sold and unsold,  no later than Saturday by 11am to the Raffle Booth / Baskets Raffle area.
