Greatmartyr Artemius at Antioch

Holy Great Martyr Artemius of Antioch was a prominent military leader during the reigns of the emperor Constantine the Great (May 21), and his son and successor Constantius (337-361). Artemius received many awards for distinguished service and courage. He was appointed viceroy of Egypt. In this official position he did much for the spreading and strengthening Christianity in Egypt.

Saint Artemius was sent by the emperor Constantius to bring the relics of the holy Apostle Andrew from Patras, and the relics of the holy Apostle Luke from Thebes of Boeotia, to Constantinople. The holy relics were placed in the Church of the Holy Apostles beneath the table of oblation. The emperor rewarded him by making him ruler of Egypt.

The emperor Constantius was succeeded on the throne by Julian the Apostate (361-363). Julian in his desire to restore paganism was extremely antagonistic towards Christians, sending hundreds to their death. At Antioch he ordered the torture of two bishops unwilling to forsake the Christian Faith.

During this time, Saint Artemius arrived in Antioch and publicly denounced Julian for his impiety. The enraged Julian subjected the saint to terrible tortures and threw the Great Martyr Artemius into prison. While Artemius was praying, Christ, surrounded by angels, appeared to him and said, "Take courage, Artemius! I am with you and will preserve you from every hurt which is inflicted upon you, and I already have prepared your crown of glory. Since you have confessed Me before the people on earth, so shall I confess you before My Heavenly Father. Therefore, take courage and rejoice, you shall be with Me in My Kingdom." Hearing this, Artemius rejoiced and offered up glory and thanksgiving to Him.

On the following day, Julian demanded that Saint Artemius honor the pagan gods. Meeting with steadfast refusal, the emperor resorted to further tortures. The saint endured all without a single moan. The saint told Julian that he would be justly recompensed for his persecution of Christians. Julian became furious and resorted to even more savage tortures, but they did not break the will of the saint. Finally the Great Martyr Artemius was beheaded.

His relics were buried by Christians. After the death of Saint Artemius, his prophecy about Julian the Apostate's impending death came true.

Julian left Antioch for a war with the Persians. Near the Persian city of Ctesiphon, Julian came upon an elderly Persian, who agreed to betray his countrymen and guide Julian's army. The old man deceived Julian and led his army into the Karmanite wilderness, where there was neither food nor water. Tired from hunger and thirst, Julian's army battled against fresh Persian forces.

Divine retribution caught up with Julian the Apostate. During the battle he was mortally wounded by an unseen hand and an unseen weapon. Julian groaned deeply said, "You have conquered, Galilean!" After the death of the apostate emperor, the relics of the Great Martyr Artemius were transferred with honor from Antioch to Constantinople.

Saint Artemius is invoked by those suffering from hernias.

Святий великомученик Артемій був одним із видатних воєначальників за правління рівноапостольного царя Константина Великого (306–337, пам'ять 21 травня), а потім його сина і наступника Констанція (337–361). Артемій, який мав багато нагород за відмінну службу і відвагу, був поставлений намісником Єгипту. На цій посаді він багато зробив для поширення і зміцнення християнства в Єгипті.

Імператора Констанція на престолі змінив Юліан Відступник (361–363). Бажаючи повернути язичництво, він вів непримиренну боротьбу з християнством, відправляючи на смерть сотні християн. В Антіохії Юліан наказав катувати двох єпископів, які не бажали відректися від Христової віри. У цей час до міста прийшов святий Артемій і всенародно викрив Юліана в нечесті. Розгніваний Відступник піддав святого жорстоким тортурам. Після цього великомученика кинули до темниці.

Під час молитви, яку святий підносив до Господа, йому з'явився Сам Христос в оточенні ангелів і сказав: "Мужайся, Артемію, Я з тобою і позбавлю тебе від усякого болю, який заподіяли тобі мучителі, і вже готую тобі вінець слави. Бо як ти сповідав Мене перед людьми, на землі, так і Я сповідаю тебе перед Отцем Моїм Небесним. Отож будь мужній і радуйся — ти будеш зі Мною в Моєму Царстві". Почувши це від Самого Господа, великомученик зрадів і став палко дякувати і славословити Його.

Наступного дня Юліан зажадав, щоб великомученик Артемій визнав язичницьких богів. Зустрівши рішучу відмову, імператор вдався до тортур. Подвижник переносив усе без єдиного стогону. Святий передрік Юліанові, що скоро той отримає справедливу відплату за зло, заподіяне ним християнам. Відступник розлютився і вдався до ще лютіших тортур, але вони не зломили волю великомученика. Тоді святого Артемія обезголовили († 362). Його останки були поховані християнами.

Після смерті святого великомученика Артемія збулося його пророцтво про швидку загибель Юліана Відступника. Імператор зі своїм військом вийшов із Антіохії для битви з персами. Біля перського міста Ктезифона він зустрів старого перса. Той обіцяв зрадити співвітчизників і бути провідником війську Юліана. Старий обдурив Відступника і завів його військо в Карманітську пустелю, у непрохідні місця, де не було ні води, ні їжі. Змучене голодом і спрагою греко-римське військо Юліана було змушене вступити в бій зі свіжими силами персів.

Божественна відплата наздогнала тут і самого Відступника. Під час битви він був смертельно поранений невидимою рукою, незримою зброєю. Юліан тяжко застогнав і, вмираючи, вимовив: "Ти переміг, Галілеянине!"

Після загибелі імператора-відступника мощі святого великомученика Артемія було з почестями перенесено із Антіохії до Константинополя.

Thanksgiving Project

November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and also the month we commemorate the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine. The UOL National Executive Board has decided that our yearly recommended Thanksgiving Project will focus on bringing a greater awareness of the Holodomor while helping the hungry in our communities now and in the future. In our remembrance, we strive to combat hunger in the present.

Please donate non-perishable foods in the bin in the vestibule.  Each item will be labeled with a sticker that says:

In 1932, 10 million people perished in an artificial famine in Ukraine.
We pray no one ever goes hungry again.

У наших спогадах ми прагнемо боротися з голодом у сьогоденні.
