Saint John Maximovitch, Metropolitan of Tobolsk

St. John (Maximovich) was born in Nizhyn in the family of the Ukrainian nobleman Maxim Vasilkovsky (Pechersky), who belonged to the Cossack foreman and came from the city of Vasilkov. Maksym Vasylkovsky's father, a small nobleman from Kyiv Polissya, lived in Nizhyn in the middle of the 17th century and was listed as a "citizen of Kyiv-Pechersk": he had hams and mills that belonged to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

Saint John (Maximovich) received a good home education. In 1669, on the recommendation of the Chernihiv Archbishop Lazarus (Baranovich), he was admitted to the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He graduated in 1673, then taught at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy poetry, rhetoric and Latin.

In 1676, the saint took monastic tonsure in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Apparently, at the same time he was ordained a deacon and then on the priest. In 1678, in the rank of hieromonk was appointed a Lavra economist and preacher. Next year, as part of the delegation of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, he went to Tsar Alexei I at the expense of repairing Lavra fortifications, since the danger of the Ottoman invasion was real.

In 1681, Father John was appointed governor of the Bryansk Sven Monastery, assigned to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Here he was actively engaged in the reorganization of monastic life, paid special attention to the discipline and piety of the monks, the strengthening of the monastery by deeply believing and educated countrymen-Ukrainians.

Subsequently, St. John taught Latin in the Chernihiv "Latin School", translated in 1689 on the initiative of Lazarus (Baranovich) and with the support of Hetman Ivan Mazepa from Novgorod-Seversky. In 1695, after the death of Lazar (Baranovich), the new archbishop of Chernihiv and Novgorod-Seversky Theodosius (Uglich).

In 1696, Bishop Theodosius died, and according to the old custom, the council of representatives of all the states of the Left-Bank Ukraine gathered for the election of a new bishop. Of the three contenders for this position - Lavrentiy (Krshtonovich), Michael (Lezhaisky) and proposed by Ivan Mazepa - John (Maksimovich) - the latter was unanimously elected. On November 10, 1697, he was ordained by Patriarch Adrian to the Archbishop of Chernihiv and Novgorod-Seversky.

For fourteen years, Saint John led the Chernihiv diocese, was celebrated with high Christian virtues and educational affairs. He cared about the typography, he himself wrote beautiful theological works and published them, as well as the works of other Ukrainian Orthodox authors. In 1700, on the basis of the "Latin school", he opened a collegium in Chernihiv like the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, but first only from three grammar classes. He was the first teacher to the college.

Taking care of the teachers, St. John sent the pupils of the Chernihiv Collegium to the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy with an obligation to return to the collegium after its completion. In the documents of 1708 there is evidence that the collegium was then called in honor of its founder "Collegium Archiepioscope Maximoviano Czernihoviae" ("collegium of Archbishop of Chernigiv Maximovich"). St. John sacrificed to the Chernihiv Collegium and his own funds.

As a writer and theologian, he belonged to the Chernihiv literary and artistic center of cultural figures, and after the death of Reverend Lazarus (Baranovich) led this center. The saint is also known as a poet. He thoroughly developed a verse-parable, above him in this genre none of the poets of that time was raised. He was a master of epigrammatical verse. In a number of his poems there are philosophical reflections on the universe, the essence of life, its values, the mystery of the surrounding phenomena. "Take me, depths, for you cannot be understood," the author concludes, wondering at the natural forces.

St. John also constantly took care of the poor, cared about education and the improvement of the morality of the clergy. It is also known about his strong connection of the saint with the Holy Mount Athos. He provided significant assistance to Ukrainian and Belarusian monks on Holy Mountain, as evidenced, for example, by his letter to the St. Panteleimon's Athos Monastery.

In 1712, the saint was forced to leave his native Ukraine. By decree of Peter I, he was ordained Metropolitan of Siberia and Tobolsk. Together with him, his faithful assistant Ivan Lezhaisky went to the new place, as well as four Chernihiv semi-singers. Arriving in Tobolsk, the metropolitan launched extensive educational and missionary activities among the non-Christian peoples of Siberia. In this he was helped by a connoisseur of local customs, the previous Metropolitan of Siberia and Tobolsky, at that time at rest, a native of Ukraine Theodosius (Lishchynsky; † 1727). St. John continued his work, transferred to Siberian Ukrainian church customs, Ukrainian culture.

On July 10, 1715, St. John, after the Divine Liturgy, arranged a reception for the clergy and the poor, himself served them. After that, he said goodbye to all and went to his episcopal chambers. During the bell, who called for the evening service, St. John died, praying on his knees. He was buried in the parish of St. John Chrysostom in the St. Sophia Dormition Cathedral of Tobolsk.

Locals during his lifetime considered him a saint and testified to the numerous miracles that took place at his grave, but only two hundred years after his death at the 1916 Council, Metropolitan John was recognized as one of the saints.

Святитель Іоанн (Максимович) народився в Ніжині в сім'ї українського шляхтича Максима Васильковського (Печерського), який належав до козацької старшини і походив із міста Василькова. Батько Максима Васильковського, дрібний шляхтич із київського Полісся, в середині XVII століття жив у Ніжині й числився «обивателем Києво-Печерським»: мав на відкупі шинки і млини, що належали Києво-Печерській Лаврі.

Святитель Іоанн (Максимович) здобув хорошу домашню освіту. У 1669 році за рекомендацією чернігівського архієпископа Лазаря (Барановича) був прийнятий до Києво-Могилянської академії. Навчання закінчив 1673 року, потім викладав у Києво-Могилянській академії поетику, риторику та латинську мову.

У 1676 році святий прийняв у Києво-Печерській Лаврі чернечий постриг. Вочевидь, тоді ж був висвячений на диякона й потім на священника. У 1678 році у сані ієромонаха був призначений лаврським економом та проповідником. Наступного року у складі делегації Києво-Печерської Лаври їздив до царя Олексія І за коштами на ремонт лаврських укріплень, оскільки реальною була небезпека османського нашестя.

У 1681 році отець Іоанн був призначений намісником Брянського Свенського монастиря, приписаного до Києво-Печерської Лаври. Тут він активно займався реорганізацією монастирського життя, приділяв особливу увагу дисципліні й благочестю ченців, зміцненню монастиря глибоко віруючими та освіченими земляками-українцями. Це викликало численні скарги: «Черный священник Іоанн… скоро заполнил его [монастир] поляками и черкасами…, а наших священников московских и дьяконов выслал из монастыря всех до одного человека, а набрал священников и дьяконов иноземцев зарубежных…»

Згодом святий Іоанн викладав латину в Чернігівській «латинській школі», переведеній 1689 року за ініціативою Лазаря (Барановича) й за підтримки гетьмана Івана Мазепи із Новгорода-Сіверського. 1695 року, уже після смерті Лазаря (Барановича), новим архієпископом Чернігівським і Новгород-Сіверським Феодосієм (Углицьким) святий Іоанн був поставлений архімандритом Свято-Успенського Єлецького монастиря у Чернігові.

У 1696 році владика Феодосій помер, і за старовинним звичаєм зібралася рада представників всіх станів Лівобережної України для виборів нового єпископа. Із трьох претендентів на цю посаду — Лаврентія (Крщоновича), Михаїла (Лежайського) та запропонованого Іваном Мазепою Іоанна (Максимовича) — саме останній і був одноголосно обраний. 10 листопада 1697 року він був висвячений у патріархом Адріаном на архієпископа Чернігівського і Новгород-Сіверського.

Чотирнадцять років святитель Іоанн керував Чернігівською єпархією, відзначався високими християнськими чеснотами та просвітительськими справами. Дбав про типографію, сам писав прекрасні богословські твори й видавав їх, як і твори інших українських православних авторів. У 1700 році на основі «латинської школи» він відкрив у Чернігові колегіум на зразок Києво-Могилянської академії, але спочатку лише із трьох граматичних класів. Він сам був у колегіумі першим викладачем.

Дбаючи про викладачів, святитель Іоанн направляв вихованців Чернігівського колегіуму до Києво-Могилянської академії з зобов'язанням повертатися до колегіуму після її закінчення. У документах 1708 року є свідчення, що колегіум називався тоді на честь свого засновника «Collegium Archiepiscopo Maximoviano Czernihoviae» («колегіум архієпископа Чернігівського Максимовича»). Святий Іоанн жертвував на Чернігівський колегіум і власні кошти.

Як письменник та богослов він відносився до чернігівського літературно-мистецького осередку культурних діячів, а після смерті преосвященного Лазаря (Барановича) очолив цей осередок. Святитель також відомий як поет. Він Досконало розробив вірш-притчу, вище нього в цьому жанрі ніхто із тогочасних поетів не підіймався. Був майстром епіграматичного вірша. У низці його віршів є філософські роздуми про світобудову, сутність життя, його цінності, загадковість навколишніх явищ. «Беріть мене, глибини, бо вас не збагнути», — доходить висновку автор, дивуючись природним силам.

Святитель Іоанн також постійно опікувався бідними, дбав про освіту й підвищення моральності духовенства. Відомо і про його міцний зв'язок святителя зі Святою Горою Афон. Він надавав значну допомогу українським та білоруським ченцям на Святій Горі, про що свідчить, наприклад, його грамота Свято-Пантелеймонівському Афонському монастиреві.

У 1712 році святий був вимушений залишити рідну Україну. За указом Петра І він був висвячений на митрополита Сибірського і Тобольського. Разом з ним до нового місця вирушив його вірний помічник Іван Лежайський, а також чотири чернігівських півчих. Прибувши до Тобольська, митрополит розгорнув широку просвітницьку й місіонерську діяльність серед нехристиянських народів Сибіру. У цьому йому допомагав знавець місцевих звичаїв, попередній митрополит Сибірський і Тобольський, на той час на спокої, вихідець із України Феодосій (Ліщинський; † 1727). Святитель Іоанн продовжував його справу, переносив на сибірський грунт українські церковні звичаї, українську культуру.

10 липня 1715 року святитель Іоанн після Божественної літургії влаштував у себе прийом для духовенства й бідняків, сам прислуговував їм. Після цього він попрощався зі всіма і відійшов до своїх архієрейських покоїв. Під час дзвону, який кликав до вечірнього богослужіння, святитель Іоанн помер, молячись на колінах. Був похований у приділі святителя Іоанна Златоуста у Софійському Успенському соборі міста Тобольськ.

Місцеві жителі ще за життя вважали його святим і свідчили про численні чудеса, які відбуалися біля його могили, але лише через двісті років після його смерті на Соборі 1916 року митрополит Іоанн був причислений до лику святих.

Kitchen sessions are scheduled for Tuesday starting at 9:00am and Thursday morning starting at 7:00am.  Tent and Memorial Center setups are scheduled for Wednesday starting at 5:30 pm.  Bake Sale prep is scheduled for Friday at 3pm. WE NEED YOUR HELP! 

BAKE SALE: Please make and bake your fabulous "Specialties" for our bake sale. Please drop off Friday (best - kitchen doors will be open) or Saturday by 9am.  Thank you bakers!!
