І коли входив Ісус в одне село, зустріли Його десять чоловік прокажених, які зупинились віддалік і гучним голосом говорили: Ісусе Наставнику! помилуй нас. Побачивши їх, Він сказав їм: підіть, покажіться священникам. І коли вони йшли, очистилися. Один же з них, побачивши, що зцілився, повернувся, гучним голосом прославляючи Бога, і припав лицем до ніг Його, дякуючи Йому; і це був самарянин. Тоді Ісус сказав: чи не десять очистились? де ж дев'ять? чому вони не повернулись віддати хвалу Богові, тільки іноплемінник цей? І сказав йому: встань, іди; віра твоя спасла тебе.

Одного разу за Ісусом йшло багато народу, і тиснули на Нього. Якась жінка, що хворіла на кровотечу дванадцять років, багато потерпіла від багатьох лікарів, і витратила все, що було в неї, і не отримала ніякої користі, але їй ще погіршало,– почувши про Ісуса, підійшла ззаду в народі і доторкнулась до одежі Його, бо говорила: якщо доторкнусь хоч до одежі Його, то видужаю. І зразу припинилась у неї кровотеча; і вона відчула в тілі, що зцілилася від недуги. У той же час Ісус, відчувши Сам у Собі, що вийшла з Нього сила, повернувся в народі і сказав: хто доторкнувся до одежі Моєї? Учні сказали Йому: Ти бачиш, що народ тисне на Тебе, і говориш: хто доторкнувся до Мене? Але Він дивився довкола, щоб бачити ту, яка зробила це. Жінка ж, знаючи, що з нею сталося, зі страхом і трепетом підійшла, впала перед Ним і сказала Йому всю правду. Він же сказав їй: дочко! віра твоя спасла тебе; іди з миром і будь здорова від недуги твоєї.

The Holy Great Martyr Barbara lived and suffered during the reign of the emperor Maximian (305-311). Her father, the pagan Dioscorus, was a rich and illustrious man in the Syrian city of Heliopolis. After the death of his wife, he devoted himself to his only daughter.

Seeing Barbara's extraordinary beauty, Dioscorus decided to hide her from the eyes of strangers. Therefore, he built a tower for Barbara, where only her pagan teachers were allowed to see her. From the tower there was a view of hills stretching into the distance. By day she was able to gaze upon the wooded hills, the swiftly flowing rivers, and the meadows covered with a mottled blanket of flowers; by night the harmonious and majestic vault of the heavens twinkled and provided a spectacle of inexpressible beauty. Soon the virgin began to ask herself questions about the First Cause and Creator of so harmonious and splendid a world.

Gradually, she became convinced that the souless idols were merely the work of human hands. Although her father and teachers offered them worship, she realized that the idols could not have made the surrounding world. The desire to know the true God so consumed her soul that Barbara decided to devote all her life to this goal, and to spend her life in virginity.

The fame of her beauty spread throughout the city, and many sought her hand in marriage. But despite the entreaties of her father, she refused all of them. Barbara warned her father that his persistence might end tragically and separate them forever. Dioscorus decided that the temperament of his daughter had been affected by her life of seclusion. He therefore permitted her to leave the tower and gave her full freedom in her choice of friends and acquaintances. Thus Barbara met young Christian maidens in the city, and they taught her about the Creator of the world, about the Trinity, and about the Divine Logos. Through the Providence of God, a priest arrived in Heliopolis from Alexandria disguised as a merchant. After instructing her in the mysteries of the Christian Faith, he baptized Barbara, then returned to his own country.

During this time a luxurious bathhouse was being built at the house of Dioscorus. By his orders the workers prepared to put two windows on the south side. But Barbara, taking advantage of her father's absence, asked them to make a third window, thereby forming a Trinity of light. On one of the walls of the bath-house Barbara traced a cross with her finger. The cross was deeply etched into the marble, as if by an iron instrument. Later, her footprints were imprinted on the stone steps of the bathhouse. The water of the bathhouse had great healing power. Saint Simeon Metaphrastes (November 9) compared the bathhouse to the stream of Jordan and the Pool of Siloam, because by God's power, many miracles took place there.

When Dioscorus returned and expressed dissatisfaction about the change in his building plans, his daughter told him about how she had come to know the Triune God, about the saving power of the Son of God, and about the futility of worshipping idols. Dioscorus went into a rage, grabbed a sword and was on the point of striking her with it. The holy virgin fled from her father, and he rushed after her in pursuit. His way became blocked by a hill, which opened up and concealed the saint in a crevice. On the other side of the crevice was an entrance leading upwards. Saint Barbara managed then to conceal herself in a cave on the opposite slope of the hill.

After a long and fruitless search for his daughter, Dioscorus saw two shepherds on the hill. One of them showed him the cave where the saint had hidden. Dioscorus beat his daughter terribly, and then placed her under guard and tried to wear her down with hunger. Finally he handed her over to the prefect of the city, named Martianus. They beat Saint Barbara fiercely: they struck her with rawhide, and rubbed her wounds with a hair cloth to increase her pain. By night Saint Barbara prayed fervently to her Heavenly Bridegroom, and the Savior Himself appeared and healed her wounds. Then they subjected the saint to new, and even more frightful torments.

In the crowd where the martyr was tortured was the virtuous Christian woman Juliana, an inhabitant of Heliopolis. Her heart was filled with sympathy for the voluntary martyrdom of the beautiful and illustrious maiden. Juliana also wanted to suffer for Christ. She began to denounce the torturers in a loud voice, and they seized her.

Both martyrs were tortured for a long time. Their bodies were raked and wounded with hooks, and then they were led naked through the city amidst derision and jeers. Through the prayers of Saint Barbara the Lord sent an angel who covered the nakedness of the holy martyrs with a splendid robe. Then the steadfast confessors of Christ, Saints Barbara and Juliana, were beheaded. Dioscorus himself executed Saint Barbara. The wrath of God was not slow to punish both torturers, Martianus and Dioscorus. They were killed after being struck by lightning.

In the sixth century the relics of the holy Great Martyr Barbara were transferred to Constantinople. Six hundred years later, they were transferred to Kiev (July 11) by Barbara, the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenos, wife of the prince Michael Izyaslavich. They rest even now at Kiev's Saint Vladimir cathedral, where an Akathist to the saint is served each Tuesday.

Many pious Orthodox Christians are in the habit of chanting the Troparion of Saint Barbara each day, recalling the Savior's promise to her that those who remembered her and her sufferings would be preserved from a sudden, unexpected death, and would not depart this life without benefit of the Holy Mysteries of Christ.

Свята великомучениця Варвара народилася в м. Іліополі (нинішньої Сирії) за часів імператора Максиміна (305-311 рр.) у знатній язичницькій родині. Батько Варвари Діоскор, рано втративши свою дружину, був пристрасно прив'язаний до своєї єдиної дочки. Щоб уберегти вродливу дівчину від сторонніх поглядів і водночас позбавити її спілкування з християнами, він побудував для доньки спеціальний замок, звідки вона виходила тільки з дозволу батька (кондак 2). Споглядаючи з висоти вежі красу Божого світу, Варвара часто відчувала бажання пізнати його істинного Творця. Коли приставлені до неї виховательки говорили, що світ створений богами, яких шанує її батько, то вона подумки говорила: "Боги, яких шанує мій батько, зроблені руками людськими. Як ці боги могли створити таке пресвітле небо і таку красу земну? Єдиний повинен бути такий Бог, Якого створила не рука людська, але Сам Він, що має власне буття". Так свята Варвара вчилася від творінь видимого світу пізнавати Творця, і на ній справджувалися слова пророка "Поучіхся в усіх ділах твоїх, в створінні руку твою поучіхся" (Пс. 142:5) (ікос 2).

Згодом до Діоскора все частіше стали приходити багаті і знатні женихи, просячи руки його дочки. Батько, який давно мріяв про заміжжя Варвари, вирішив завести з нею розмову про шлюб, але, на свій жаль, почув від неї рішучу відмову виконати його волю. Діоскор вирішив, що з часом настрій доньки зміниться і в неї з'явиться схильність до заміжжя. Для цього він дозволив їй виходити з вежі, сподіваючись, що в спілкуванні з подругами вона побачить інше ставлення до заміжжя.

Одного разу, коли Діоскор перебував у тривалій подорожі, Варвара познайомилася з місцевими християнками, які розповіли їй про Триєдиного Бога, про невимовне Божество Ісуса Христа, про Його втілення від Пречистої Діви та про Його вільне страждання і Воскресіння. Сталося так, що в той час в Іліополі проїздом з Олександрії перебував священик, який прийняв вигляд купця. Дізнавшись про нього, Варвара запросила пресвітера до себе і просила звершити над нею Таїнство Хрещення. Священик виклав їй основи святої віри і потім хрестив в ім'я Отця і Сина і Святого Духа. Освічена благодаттю Хрещення, Варвара ще з більшою любов'ю звернулася до Бога. Вона обіцяла присвятити Йому все своє життя.

За час відсутності Діоскора при його будинку велося будівництво кам'яної вежі, де робітники за наказом господаря мали намір спорудити два вікна з південного боку. Але Варвара, зайшовши одного разу подивитися будівництво, ублагала їх зробити третє вікно – на образ Троїчного Світла (ікос 3). Коли ж повернувся батько, то він зажадав у доньки звіту про зроблене: "Три краще, ніж два, – говорила Варвара, – бо у неприступного, невимовного Світла Троїчного Три Вікна (Іпостасі або Особи)". Почувши від Варвари християнські віровчительні настанови, Діоскор розлютився. Він кинувся на неї з оголеним мечем, але Варвара встигла вибігти з дому (ікос 4). Вона сховалася в гірській ущелині, яка дивним чином розступилася перед нею.

Надвечір Діоскор за вказівкою одного пастуха все ж знайшов Варвару і з побоями притягнув мученицю в дім (ікос 5). На ранок він відвів Варвару до міського правителя і сказав: "Я відрікаюся від неї, бо вона відкидає богів моїх, і якщо не звернеться до них знову, то не буде мені дочкою. Муч її, державний правителю, як буде завгодно твоїй волі". Довго вмовляв градоначальник Варвару не відступати від давніх батьківських законів і не чинити опір волі батька. Але свята мудрою промовою викривала омани ідолопоклонників і сповідувала Ісуса Христа Богом. Тоді її почали сильно бити воловими жилами і після цього розтирати глибокі рани жорсткою волосяницею.

Наприкінці дня Варвару відвели в темницю. Вночі, коли її розум був зайнятий молитвою, їй явився Господь і сказав: "Дерзай, наречена Моя, і не бійся, бо Я з тобою. Я дивлюся на подвиг твій і полегшую твої хвороби. Перетерпи до кінця, щоб незабаром насолодитися вічними благами в Царстві Моєму". Наступного дня всі були здивовані, побачивши Варвару, – на її тілі не залишилося жодних слідів недавніх катувань (ікос 6). Бачачи таке диво, одна християнка, на ім'я Іуліанія, відкрито висповідала свою віру й оголосила бажання постраждати за Христа (кондак 8). Обох мучениць почали водити оголеними містом, а потім повісили на дереві й довго катували (кондак 9). Їхні тіла терзали гаками, палили свічками, били по голові молотком (ікос 7). Від таких тортур неможливо було залишитися людині живою, якби мучениць не зміцнювала сила Божа. Залишаючись вірними Христу, за наказом правителя мучениці були обезголовлені. Святу Варвару стратив сам Діоскор (ікос 10). Але безжального батька незабаром вразила блискавка, перетворивши його тіло на попіл.

Мощі святої великомучениці Варвари в VI столітті було перенесено до Константинополя, а в XII столітті дочка візантійського імператора Олексія Комніна (1081-1118 рр.), княжна Варвара, одружуючись із руським князем Михайлом Ізяславичем, привезла їх із собою до Києва, де вони перебувають і тепер – у кафедральному соборі святого князя Володимира.

A Call to Action

On Wednesday, December 6, members of the U.S. Congress blocked an emergency spending bill to provide additional aid to Ukraine in her battle against Russia's genocidal aggression that seeks to eliminate our ancestral homeland, her people, history, culture and churches. Congress's failure to approve additional funding for Ukraine when it is needed most is beyond reason and decency, as we recall that December 5, marked the 29th anniversary of the signing of the Budapest Memorandum.  This memorandum was signed by the Ukrainian Government in good faith and led to Ukraine giving up her arsenal of nuclear weapons in exchange for security assurances from the United States, the United Kingdom, and yes Russia.

As Russia's invasion and illegal annexation of Crimea approaches its 10th year and the full scale war against Ukraine approaches its 22nd month, we American citizens of Ukrainian descent and friends of Ukraine cannot, must not, allow America's security assurances to Ukraine give way to Ukraine fatigue and competing conflicts in other parts of the world.  We must act and make our voices heard.

Please call on your Congressional representatives to stand with and support Ukraine. Your call will be logged in, counted like your vote in the elections, and will make a difference. We ask that you please make four calls. One to the White House, your two Senators, and your House representative.  Just fifteen minutes of your day will help us save Ukrainian lives and the world from tyranny.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have spent over 650 days and nights since the full-scale invasion started…and now in the freezing cold in trenches with no end to the war in sight.  They are doing their part to defend the civilian population and us. Let's do our small part to support them in their fight against tyranny and oppression.

Ukrainian Orthodox League Thanksgiving Project

November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and also the month we commemorate the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine. The UOL National Executive Board has decided that our yearly recommended Thanksgiving Project will focus on bringing a greater awareness of the Holodomor while helping the hungry in our communities now and in the future. In our remembrance, we strive to combat hunger in the present.

Please donate non-perishable foods in the bin in the vestibule.  Each item will be labeled with a sticker that says:
