Dormition - Успіння

Propers for September 1, 2024

Sep. 1 – 10th Sunday after Pentecost. Tone 1

Afterfeast of the Dormition. Martyr Andrew Stratelates and 2,593 soldiers with him in Cilicia (3rd c.). Martyrs Timothy, Agapius, and Thecla of Palestine (304)

1 Cor. 4:9-16; Mt. 17:14-23;
Eph. 6:10-17; Lk. 21:12-19

Tropar Resurrectional, Tone 1

When the stone had been sealed by the Jews, while the soldiers were guarding Your Most-Pure Body, You arose on the Third Day, Savior, granting Life to the world. Therefore, the Powers of Heaven cried to You Giver of Life: Glory to Your Resurrection, Christ. Glory to Your Kingdom. Glory to Your Divine Plan, only Lover of Mankind.

Tropar of the Feast, Tone 1

In giving birth, you preserved your virginity. In falling asleep you did not forsake the world, Birth-Giver of God. You were translated to life, Mother of Life, and through your prayers you deliver our souls from death.

Tropar of our church, Tone 4

Prophet and Forerunner of the coming of Christ,/ we who honor you with love can find no manner of praising you worthily./ For the barrenness of one who bore you / and the silence of your father have been ended by your being born of divine grace / and you have proclaimed to the world / the Incarnation of the Son of God.

Tropar to Martyr Andrew, Tone 5

You renounced the glory of earthly rank / and inherited the kingdom of heaven; / you adorned your incorruptible crown as with beautiful stones./ You led an army of martyrs to Christ, / and with the angels in the never-fading light / you found Christ the never-setting sun. / Together with those who suffered with you, / holy general Andrew, / ever pray to Him that He may save our souls.

Kondak Resurrectional, Tone 1

As God, You arose from the tomb in glory, raising the world with Yourself. Human nature praises You as God for death has vanished. Adam exults, Master. Eve, freed from bondage, rejoices and cries out: "You, Christ, are the Giver of Resurrection to all."

Kondak of our church, Tone 3

She who was previously barren / now bears the Forerunner of Christ / who is the fulfillment of every prophecy. / For the prophets proclaimed beforehand / that having laid hands on Him in the Jordan, / he would be manifest as Prophet, / Preacher / and Forerunner of the Word of God.

Glory …
Kondak to Martyr Andrew, Tone 4

Standing before the Lord in prayer like a star near the sun, / you were filled with ineffable joy beholding your desire: the treasure of the kingdom. / You sing without ceasing to the immortal King/ together with the angels throughout the ages. / With them, general Andrew, unceasingly pray for us all.

Now and ever ...
Kondak of Feast, Tone 2

Neither the tomb nor death had power over the Birth-Giver of God; she is ever watchful in her prayers and in her intercession lies unfailing hope. For as the Mother of Life she has been translated to life by the One Who dwelt within her ever-virginal womb.

Prokimens

Priest: Let us be attentive! Peace be with you all!

Reader: And with your spirit!

Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The Prokimen in Tone 1: Let Your mercy, Lord, be upon us, as we have put our hope in You.

Choir: (repeats the prokimen)

Reader: V. Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous. Praise befits the upright.

Choir: (repeats the prokimen)

Reader: The Second Prokimen in Tone 4: In the saints that are in His earth hath the Lord been wondrous; He hath wrought all His desires in them.

Choir: In the saints that are in His earth hath the Lord been wondrous; He hath wrought all His desires in them.

Epistles

Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.

Deacon: Let us be attentive.

Reader: Brethren, I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now. I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Therefore I urge you, imitate me.

Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians.

Deacon: Let us be attentive.

Reader: Brethren, finally, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Priest: Peace be with you.

Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Verse: God gives me retribution and has subdued peoples under me.

Verse: He magnifies the salvation of the king and deals mercifully for His anointed, for David and for his seed forever.

Verse: The righteous cried, and the Lord heard them; and He delivered them from all their afflictions.

Instead of "It is right in truth"

Beholding the Dormition of the Most-Pure One, the angels were amazed, as the Virgin was taken up from earth to heaven.

Irmos, Tone 1: In You, Pure Virgin, the bounds of nature are overcome: Childbirth remains virginal and death is betrothed to life. Birth-Giver of God, Virgin after bearing a child and alive after death, always save Your inheritance.

Communion Verse

Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the Highest. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, praise befits the upright. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
