Звернення Собору Єпископів Української Православної Церкви США та Діаспори з нагоди 35-ї річниці Незалежності України

Всечесному духовенству та вірним Української Православної Церкви США та Діаспори, а також усім людям доброї волі:

З глибокою вдячністю Всемогутньому Богові Собор Єпископів Української Православної Церкви США та Дівспори єднається з народом України та українцями по всьому світу у відзначенні 35-ї річниці відновлення незалежності України, проголошеної 24 серпня 1991 року. Цей історичний день став не лише відродженням суверенної держави, але й відновленням дарованого Богом права народу жити у свободі, зберігати свою віру, плекати культурну спадщину та будувати майбутнє на засадах правди, справедливості й гідності людської особи.

Ця річниця набуває особливого значення ще й тому, що цього року Сполучені Штати Америки відзначають 250-ту річницю своєї незалежності. Хоча історичні обставини наших народів є різними, обидві держави свідчать про незмінну істину: свобода ніколи не здобувається без жертовності і не зберігається без мужності. Сполучені Штати стали маяком свободи завдяки непохитній відданості тих, хто вірив, що людська гідність бере свій початок у Самому Творцеві. Україна ж і сьогодні продовжує свій шлях захисту цих самих священних принципів, свідчачи перед світом, що свобода є водночас Божим даром і великою відповідальністю, покладеною на кожне покоління.

Понад століття українці Америки дбайливо зберігають духовну, культурну та національну спадщину своєї історичної Батьківщини, водночас із вдячністю та відданістю роблячи вагомий внесок у життя Сполучених Штатів Америки. Завдяки жертовному служінню духовенства, громадських діячів, освітян, ветеранів, науковців та незліченних українських родин наші громади зберегли українську мову, традиції, християнську віру та історичну пам'ять. Сьогодні цей самий дух продовжує жити у невтомній гуманітарній допомозі, захисті правди, підтримці вимушених переселенців та у солідарності з мужніми воїнами і захисниками України, які боронять не лише свою державу, але й загальнолюдські цінності свободи, справедливості та людської гідності.

Як православні християни, ми усвідомлюємо, що сила України завжди полягала не лише в її державних кордонах, але передусім у її духовній спадщині. Від Хрещення Київської Русі, через подвиг святих, святителів, преподобних, духовенства, батьків і матерів, а також незліченних поколінь вірних, український народ виховувався у світлі Євангелія Господа нашого Ісуса Христа. Їхній приклад нагадує нам, що справжній патріотизм нерозривно пов'язаний зі святістю життя, що любов до Батьківщини виявляється через жертовне служіння ближньому, а кожен християнин покликаний нести відповідальність за добробут свого народу і своєї землі.

Однак цьогорічне святкування затьмарене глибоким болем. Уже понад чотири роки народ України переживає руйнівні наслідки жорстокої та несправедливої російської агресії. Безліч людських життів було втрачено, родини розділені, міста й села зруйновані, а мільйони людей несуть на собі рани війни - тілесні, душевні та духовні. Попри це, український народ залишається непохитним у своїй вірі та надії. Ми також висловлюємо щиру вдячність народам світу, державам, церковним громадам, гуманітарним організаціям і незліченним друзям України, які своєю жертовністю, молитвами та непохитною підтримкою допомагають українському народові пережити цей найтемніший період новітньої історії.

Відзначаючи цю священну річницю, ми усвідомлюємо, що історія України ніколи не була історією ізольованого народу. У країнах Західної Європи, Австралії, Північної та Південної Америки покоління українців створили живі громади, які зберігають православну віру та багату духовну й культурну спадщину своїх предків. Об'єднані молитвою, історичною пам'яттю та спільним покликанням служити Богові й ближньому, ці громади розділяють радощі й страждання українського народу. Разом вони свідчать, що узи віри, співчуття та взаємної відповідальності не знають державних кордонів, нагадуючи всьому світові: біль одного народу стає спільним болем усіх, хто прагне правди, справедливості, миру та пошани до дарованої Богом гідності кожної людини.

Як Українська Православна Церква США та Діаспори, ми знову підтверджуємо нашу непохитну готовність молитися, служити та бути поруч із тими, хто страждає. Закликаємо духовенство і вірних продовжувати підтримувати гуманітарні ініціативи, допомагати вимушеним переселенцям, утішати скорботних, свідчити про правду, відстоювати мир, заснований на справедливості, та залишатися вірними свідками Євангелія Христового -Того, Хто один дарує мир, якого світ дати не може.

У цей святий день молімося, щоб Господь укріпив захисників і захисниць України, утішив усіх, хто оплакує своїх рідних, зцілив поранених, оберігав невинних та дарував мудрість усім, на кого покладена відповідальність за майбутнє народів. Нехай благословить Господь український народ справедливим і тривалим миром, збереже єдність України та дарує майбутнім поколінням можливість жити у свободі, гідності та вірі.

Молитвами Пресвятої Владичиці нашої Богородиці, святого рівноапостольного великого князя Володимира, святої рівноапостольної княгині Ольги та всіх святих землі Української нехай Господь благословить Україну та укріпить усіх людей доброї волі, які трудяться задля правди, справедливості i миру.

Statement of the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora on the Occasion of the 35th Anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine

To the Reverend Clergy and Faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America and Diaspora, and to all people of goodwill:

With profound gratitude to Almighty God, the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora joins the people of Ukraine and Ukrainians throughout the world in commemorating the 35th Anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine's Independence, proclaimed on August 24, 1991. This historic day marked not merely the rebirth of a sovereign state, but the renewal of a people's God-given right to live in freedom, preserve their faith, safeguard their cultural heritage, and shape their future according to the principles of truth, justice, and human dignity.

This anniversary carries particular significance as our nation in the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence. Though separated by history and circumstance, both nations bear witness to the enduring truth that freedom is never inherited without sacrifice, nor preserved without courage. The United States became a beacon of liberty through the steadfast commitment of those who believed that human dignity is rooted in the Creator. Ukraine likewise continues its own journey of defending these same sacred principles, demonstrating to the world that freedom is both a gift from God and a solemn responsibility entrusted to every generation.

For well over a century, Ukrainian Americans have faithfully nurtured the spiritual, cultural, and national identity of their ancestral homeland while contributing with gratitude and loyalty to the life of the United States. Through the vision and sacrifice of clergy, community leaders, educators, veterans, scholars, and countless faithful families, our communities have preserved the Ukrainian language, traditions, Christian faith, and historical memory. Today, that same spirit continues as Ukrainian Americans tirelessly support humanitarian relief, advocate for justice, welcome refugees, and stand beside the courageous men and women of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who defend not only their homeland but the fundamental values of freedom and human dignity.

As Orthodox Christians, we recognize that the strength of Ukraine has always been rooted not merely in its borders but in its spiritual inheritance. From the Holy Baptism of Kyivan Rus', through the witness of saints, hierarchs, monastics, clergy, fathers and mothers, and faithful believers across the centuries, generations have been formed in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Their lives remind us that authentic patriotism is inseparable from holiness, that love for one's homeland is expressed through sacrificial service, and that every Christian bears responsibility for the welfare of both neighbor and nation.

Today, however, this celebration is tempered by sorrow. For more than four years, the people of Ukraine have continued to endure the devastating consequences of Russia's brutal and unjust invasion. Countless lives have been lost, families have been separated, cities and villages have been destroyed, and millions continue to carry the wounds of war in body, mind, and spirit. Yet amid unimaginable suffering, the Ukrainian people remain steadfast in faith and hope. We also express our profound gratitude to the nations, communities, churches, humanitarian organizations, and countless friends throughout the world whose generosity, prayers, and unwavering solidarity continue to sustain the people of Ukraine during this darkest chapter of its modern history.

As we commemorate this sacred anniversary, we also recognize that the story of Ukraine is not lived in isolation. Across the nations of Western Europe, Australia, North and South America, generations of Ukrainians have established vibrant communities that preserve the Orthodox Christian faith, and the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of their ancestors. United by prayer, historical memory, and a common calling to serve God and neighbor, these communities continue to share in the joys and sorrows of the Ukrainian people. Together, they bear witness that the bonds of faith, compassion, and mutual responsibility transcend national borders, reminding us that the suffering of one people becomes the concern of all who seek truth, justice, peace, and the God-given dignity of every human person.

As the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America and Diaspora, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to pray, to serve, and to stand with the suffering. We call upon our clergy and faithful to continue supporting humanitarian ministries, caring for refugees, comforting the grieving, advocating for peace founded upon justice, and remaining faithful witnesses to the Gospel of Christ, who alone grants a peace the world cannot give.

On this sacred anniversary, let us pray that the Lord will strengthen the defenders of Ukraine, comfort every family mourning the loss of loved ones, heal the wounded, protect the innocent, and grant wisdom to all who bear responsibility for the future of nations. May He bless the people of Ukraine with a just and lasting peace, preserve the unity of its people, and grant that future generations may live in freedom, dignity, and faith.

Through the prayers of the Most Holy Birth-Giver of God, the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr and Princess Olha, and all the saints of the land of Ukraine, may the Lord bless and strengthen all people who labor for truth, justice, peace, and reconciliation.

The "Glass of Water" Theory

There are those who hold what is known as the "glass of water" theory regarding sex. When you're thirsty, you drink water, they say. When you're hungry, you eat food. When you have a craving for sex, you satisfy it as you would any other impulse. But these people seem to forget that we hardly ever express our physical impulses without limitation or restriction. One doesn't drink just any kind of water. One doesn't drink water from the gutter or the sewer. One doesn't drink from a contaminated cup. One drinks from a clean cup at home or in a restaurant. And one doesn't grab the water; one asks for it. And when one is hungry, one doesn't barge into a restaurant, grab some food, and run out. So it is with sex. One doesn't grab it. Further, if sex is like drinking a glass of water, then every person on earth, who is created in the image of God, is reduced in value to a disposable paper cup that is used, or rather abused, and then discarded. The whole logic of the "glass of water" theory, however, breaks down at this point: no one ever gets pregnant from drinking water. Far from treating sex as a glass of water, Jesus elevates it to a sacrament. "Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." (Matt. 19:6). "This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church." (Eph. 5:32).

Теорія "склянки води"

Існують люди, які дотримуються так званої теорії "склянки води" щодо сексу. Коли ти хочеш пити, ти п'єш воду, кажуть вони. Коли ти голодний, ти їси. Коли в тебе виникає потяг до сексу, ти задовольняєш його, як і будь-який інший імпульс. Але ці люди, здається, забувають, що ми майже ніколи не виражаємо свої фізичні потяги без будь-яких обмежень чи меж. Людина не п'є будь-яку воду. Людина не п'є воду зі стічної канави чи каналізації. Людина не п'є з брудної чашки. Людина п'є з чистої чашки вдома або в ресторані. І людина не хапає воду — вона просить її. А коли людина голодна, вона не вривається в ресторан, не хапає їжу і не тікає геть. Так само і з сексом. Його не можна хапати. Крім того, якщо секс подібний до випивання склянки води, тоді кожна людина на землі, створена за образом Божим, зводиться до цінності одноразового паперового стаканчика, який використовують — точніше, зловживають ним — а потім викидають. Однак уся логіка теорії "склянки води" руйнується саме в цьому пункті: від пиття води ще ніхто не завагітнів. Ісус не тільки не ставиться до сексу як до склянки води, а й підносить його до рівня таїнства. "Тож, що Бог спарував, людина нехай не розлучає" (Мт. 19:6). "Ця таємниця велика; я говорю це у зв'язку з Христом і Церквою" (Єф. 5:32).
