Браття, нарешті, зміцнюйтесь Господом і могутністю сили Його. Одягніться в повну зброю Божу, щоб вам можна було стати проти хитрощів диявольських, бо наша боротьба не проти крові і плоті, а проти начальств, проти властей, проти світоправителів темряви віку цього, проти духів злоби піднебесних. Для цього прийміть повну зброю Божу, щоб ви змогли протистояти в день злий і, все подолавши, вистояти. В одній із синагог Ісус учив у суботу. Там була жінка, що мала духа немочі років вісімнадцять: вона була скорчена і ніяк не могла випрямитись. Ісус, побачивши її, покликав і сказав їй: жінко! ти визволена від твоєї недуги. І поклав на неї руки; і вона зараз же випрямилась і почала славити Бога. При цьому начальник синагоги, обурюючись, що Ісус зцілив її в суботу, сказав народові: є шість днів, в які дозволено робити; в ті і приходьте зцілятися, а не в день суботній. Господь сказав йому у відповідь: лицеміре! чи не відв'язує кожний з вас у суботу вола свого або осла від ясел, і не веде напувати? А цю дочку Авраамову, яку зв'язав сатана ось уже вісімнадцять років, чи не належало визволити від цих пут у день суботній? І коли Він говорив це, усі, хто противився Йому, засоромились; і весь народ радів за всі славні діла Його.

Apostle Andrew, the Holy and All-Praised First-Called

The Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called was the first of the Apostles to follow Christ, and he later brought his own brother, the holy Apostle Peter, to Christ (John 1:35-42). The future apostle was from Bethsaida, and from his youth he turned with all his soul to God. He did not enter into marriage, and he worked with his brother as a fisherman. When the holy Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John began to preach, Saint Andrew became his closest disciple. Declaring Christ to be the Lamb of God, Saint John the Baptist himself sent to Christ his own two disciples, the future Apostles Andrew and John the Theologian.

After the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, Saint Andrew went to the Eastern lands preaching the Word of God. He went through Asia Minor, Thrace, Macedonia, he reached the River Danube, went along the coast of the Black Sea, through Crimea, the Black Sea region and along the River Dnipro he climbed to the place where the city of Kyiv now stands.

He stopped overnight on the hills of Kyiv. Rising in the morning, he said to those disciples that were with him: "See these hills? Upon these hills shall shine forth the beneficence of God, and there will be a great city here, and God shall raise up many churches." The apostle went up around the hills, blessed them and set up a cross. Having prayed, he went up even further along the Dnipro and reached a settlement of the Slavs, where Novgorod was built. From here the apostle went through the land of the Varangians towards Rome for preaching, and again he returned to Thrace, where in the small village of Byzantium, the future Constantinople, he founded the Church of Christ.

On his journeys the First-Called Apostle endured many sufferings and torments from pagans: they cast him out of their cities and they beat him. In Sinope they pelted him with stones, but remaining unharmed, the persistent disciple of Christ continued to preach to people about the Savior. Through the prayers of the Apostle, the Lord worked miracles. By the labors of the holy Apostle Andrew, Christian Churches were established, for which he provided bishops and clergy. The final city to which the Apostle came was the city of Patra, where he was destined to suffer martyrdom.

The Lord worked many miracles through His disciple in Patra. The infirm were made whole, and the blind received their sight. Through the prayers of the Apostle, the illustrious citizen Sosios recovered from serious illness and Maximilla and Stratokles, the wife and brother of the governor of Patra, were healed. The miracles accomplished by the Apostle and his fiery speech enlightened almost all the citizens of the city of Patra with the true Faith.

Few pagans remained at Patra, but among them was the prefect of the city, Aegeatos. The Apostle Andrew repeatedly turned to him with the words of the Gospel. But even the miracles of the Apostle did not convince Aegeatos. The holy Apostle with love and humility appealed to his soul, striving to reveal to him the Christian mystery of life eternal, through the wonderworking power of the Holy Cross of the Lord. The angry Aegeatos gave orders to crucify the apostle. The pagan thought he might undo Saint Andrew's preaching if he were to put him to death on the cross.

Saint Andrew the First-Called accepted the decision of the prefect with joy and with prayer to the Lord, and went willingly to the place of execution. In order to prolong the suffering of the saint, Aegeatos gave orders not to nail the saint's hands and feet, but to tie them to the cross. For two days the apostle taught the citizens who gathered about. The people, in listening to him, with all their souls pitied him and tried to take Saint Andrew down from the cross. Fearing a riot of the people, Aegeatos gave orders to stop the execution. But the holy apostle began to pray that the Lord would grant him death on the cross. Just as the soldiers tried to take hold of the Apostle Andrew, they lost control of their hands. The crucified apostle, having given glory to God, said: "Lord Jesus Christ, receive my spirit." Then a blazing ray of divine light illumined the cross and the martyr crucified upon it. When the light faded, the holy Apostle Andrew had already given up his holy soul to the Lord. Maximilla, the wife of the prefect, had the body of the saint taken down from the cross, and buried him with honor.

A few centuries later, under the emperor Constantine the Great, the relics of the holy Apostle Andrew were solemnly transferred to Constantinople and placed in the church of the Holy Apostles beside the relics of the holy Evangelist Luke and Saint Paul's disciple Saint Timothy.

Блаженна Домініка Олешківська

Блаженна Домніка, народилася в Олешках у родині заможних селян Таврійської губернії (нині Херсонська область) 3 вересня 1881 року. Жити в любові і достатку Домні (так її хрестили в дитинстві) довелося недовго. Її мати померла, коли дівчинці було всього лише сім років. Батько одружився вдруге і Домні в рідному домі довелося несолодко. Мачуха так сильно гнобила і ображала пасербицю, що трохи підрісши, дівчинка вважала за краще жити на цвинтарі, ніж у себе вдома.

Люблячи в самоті віддаватися богодуманню і молитві, Домніка випросила собі важкий послух пастуха монастирського стада.

В п'ятнадцять років, здійснивши разом з односельцями паломництво до Києво-Печерської лаври, Домна не повернулася назад, а знайшла собі житло в одному з цвинтарних склепів Києва. Роблячи прості ладанки для паломників, вона заробляла собі на хліб. Жити, правда, доводилося їй впроголодь. Волею-неволею їй довелося повернутися в рідне селище. Але вдома нічого не змінилося, жити там їй було нестерпно, і в 1896 році Домна приходить в школу для дівчаток-сиріт при Свято-Успенському жіночому Олешківському монастирі. Там вона навчилася читати і писати, а школу безперервної молитви Домна почала проходити ще в Києві, в цвинтарному склепі, коли ночами, тремтячи від холоду і страху, безупинно повторювала Ісусову молитву. Після закінчення навчання вона була прийнята в обитель послушницею з ім'ям Домніка.

Люблячи в самоті віддаватися богодуманню і молитві, Домніка випросила собі важкий послух пастуха монастирського стада. Тут вона почала проходити наступний клас богословської освіти. Кращі богослови сучасності саме таким чином і здобували свої духовні дипломи. Преподобний Клеопа Румунський точно так само високо в горах, серед телят і корів, отримав атестат з відзнакою з богослов'я, читаючи святих отців і творячи за вервицями невпинну молитву. Домніка теж серед монастирських тварин отримала від Бога відмінну оцінку з богослов'я, за що була нагороджена даром прозорливості і пророцтва. Так здобувають вчені ступені справжні богослови.

Деякі люди в той час бачили дивну картину: Домніка вголос читає Псалтир, а телята збираються біля неї і уважно, розчепіривши вуха, слухають. Ми не знаємо, наскільки добре вони розуміли те, що читала послушниця, але коли після читання вона віддавала їм команду «ідіть пасіться» або «пішли на водопій», то вони слухали її, як добре навчені солдати свого начальника.

Коли над небом ще тільки починали збиратися грозові революційні хмари, Домніка вже знала, яким дощем з градом та блискавками закінчиться ця буря. Сховавшись в кукурудзяному полі, вона молилася в гущі рослин з піднятими руками: «О Матір Божа, що ж з нами тепер буде?»

Після 1917 року, коли червоні богоборці, спраглі крові синів Божих, вже стали підбиратися до Олешково, Домніка стала роздавати черницям монастиря якісь дивні речі. Кому шматочок ганчірки, кому недогарки свічок, кому камінчики, а кому розсаду.

Всі пророцтва і передбачення, які блаженна Домніка відкривала своїм відвідувачам, незмінно збувалися.

Революційні активісти монастир у швидкості закрили, а черниць розігнали. Кожна з них виживала в світі, як могла. Але ось що цікаво. Ті, хто отримав від Домнік ганчірочку, влаштувалися працювати на фабрику, хто камінчик – на будівництво, хто розсаду – у колгосп, а хто огарки свічок – у свічну лавку при храмі. На місці монастиря спочатку був культрадгосп, потім трудова артіль, а пізніше дитяча колонія «Червоні паростки».

Після закриття монастиря Домніка жила у благочестивих людей у Каховці, а в 1928 році повернулася до Олешок і проживала до кінця своїх днів у будинку Наталії Іщенко. Цей будинок зберігся до цих пір. Домніка передбачила Наталії довге життя, але попередила про те, що її чоловік і син загинуть у прийдешній війні, що згодом і сталося.

Дивна поведінка і пророцтва Домночки (як її ласкаво називали люди) стали отримувати все більшу і більшу популярність. Якимось дивним і таємничим чином вона допомагала голодуючим і стражденним від холоду і зубожіння людям. У страшний голод 1933 року в багатодітний будинок, який втратив годувальника, вона приносить хліб, який, здавалося, отримала прямо з неба (хліба в той час ніде не було). В інший двір кидає очерет і каже «будуйте», і там через деякий час з'являються кошти для того, щоб відбудувати зруйнований будинок. Тим, хто мерз від холоду, Домночка кидала у двір деревинку, та через якийсь час добродій привозив їм дрова.

Таких свідчень з життя Домніки зібралося безліч, і всі вони потім свідчили про можливість канонізації цієї юродивої, так як чудеса за її молитвами відбувалися дуже часто.

Зовнішнім виглядом вона особливо не виділялася серед інших мешканців Цюрупинська (так тоді перейменували Олешки). Була вона, як свідчать очевидці: «Невисока на зріст, сутула, з грубуватим голосом, зовні нічим особливим не вирізнялася. Говорила мало, а давала предмети, і потрібно було здогадатися, що цим вона пророкувала».

Всіх вона приймала, нікому не відмовляла, але від цього її життя не ставало легше.

У храмі Домніка могла підійти до людей і щось сунути в руку або в кишеню. Потім виявлялося, що той, кому вона сунула червоний гіркий перець, був таким чином попереджений про наступаючу серйозну хворобу, кому копієчку – той виходив з фінансової кризи, хто отримував яблуко – видужував від мучительної хвороби. З кожним роком її ім'я ставало все більш і більш відомим. До неї за порадою і за благословенням стали приїжджати люди з різних куточків країни. Ієреї і єпископи, монахи і миряни шукали її святих молитов. Всі пророцтва і передбачення, які блаженна Домніка відкривала своїм відвідувачам, незмінно збувалися.

Всіх вона приймала, нікому не відмовляла, але від цього її життя не ставало легше. Особливо багато образ і утисків подвижниця відчувала від комуністичної влади і від нерозумних дітей, які, наслухавшись на шкільних уроках оповідань з атеїзму, намагалися якомога сильніше її образити.

Після війни, коли храми стали відкривати, Домніка причащалась щотижня. Навіть якщо для цього їй доводилося долати багато кілометрів шляху.

Якось, ідучи з двома жінками на престольне свято з Каховки в Берислав, блаженна сказала:

– Ой, що ж вони наробили, все потопили, всі дерева, будинки, все потопили.

– Де, матінко, що потопили? – здивовано запитали її супутниці.

– Ну що ви не бачите, чи що? Все потопили.

Здивовані жінки йшли по землі, на якій росли сади, стояли села, а матінка вже йшла по дну Каховського водосховища.

Блаженна Домніка прожила дев'яносто два роки і відійшла в небесні обителі 10 червня 1967 р. У той час вже розгоралися хрущовські гоніння проти Церкви. Але, незважаючи на заборони й всілякі перешкоди з боку влади, на похорон Домніки зібралася величезна кількість народу. Її тіло було поховано на старому монастирському кладовищі.

У зв'язку з великою кількістю чудес, що відбуваються на її могилі, і всенародним шануванням стариці, рішенням Священного Синоду у березні 2009 року блаженна Домніка Олешківська була канонізована у лику місцевошанованих святих. А за півроку до цього, у грудні 2008 року, були знайдені її святі мощі, які зараз почивають у раці храму рівноапостольної Ніни м. Олешки.

A Call to Action

On Wednesday, December 6, members of the U.S. Congress blocked an emergency spending bill to provide additional aid to Ukraine in her battle against Russia's genocidal aggression that seeks to eliminate our ancestral homeland, her people, history, culture and churches. Congress's failure to approve additional funding for Ukraine when it is needed most is beyond reason and decency, as we recall that December 5, marked the 29th anniversary of the signing of the Budapest Memorandum.  This memorandum was signed by the Ukrainian Government in good faith and led to Ukraine giving up her arsenal of nuclear weapons in exchange for security assurances from the United States, the United Kingdom, and yes Russia.

As Russia's invasion and illegal annexation of Crimea approaches its 10th year and the full scale war against Ukraine approaches its 22nd month, we American citizens of Ukrainian descent and friends of Ukraine cannot, must not, allow America's security assurances to Ukraine give way to Ukraine fatigue and competing conflicts in other parts of the world.  We must act and make our voices heard.

Please call on your Congressional representatives to stand with and support Ukraine. Your call will be logged in, counted like your vote in the elections, and will make a difference. We ask that you please make four calls. One to the White House, your two Senators, and your House representative.  Just fifteen minutes of your day will help us save Ukrainian lives and the world from tyranny.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have spent over 650 days and nights since the full-scale invasion started…and now in the freezing cold in trenches with no end to the war in sight.  They are doing their part to defend the civilian population and us. Let's do our small part to support them in their fight against tyranny and oppression.

Here are the four numbers for New York State residents and those in the NYS 19th Congressional District to call, and keep calling each day until the courageous soldiers and people of Ukraine get the support that they need from "US" to win and defeat Putin's evil forces that threaten the entire world.

Ukrainian Orthodox League Thanksgiving Project

November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and also the month we commemorate the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine. The UOL National Executive Board has decided that our yearly recommended Thanksgiving Project will focus on bringing a greater awareness of the Holodomor while helping the hungry in our communities now and in the future. In our remembrance, we strive to combat hunger in the present.

Please donate non-perishable foods in the bin in the vestibule.  Each item will be labeled with a sticker that says:

In 1932, 10 million people perished in an artificial famine in

Ukraine. We pray no one ever goes hungry again.

Asking for Prayers

James Glass was indeed able to visit wounded soldiers from the war in Ukraine. As planned, James presented each of them with the UAV Medallion Commemorative Coin last Monday. Unfortunately, James was hit by a car the next day while shopping in nearby Manheim, Germany. He suffered a severe injury to his leg which will likely require surgery. Because of this, James cut short his vacation and is trying to obtain a flight back to the USA and to the Syracuse V-A for medical treatment and possible surgery.
