Parable of the Last Judgment
We find the parable of the Last Judgment in Matthew 25:31-46. In this parable, the Lord speaks about what will happen at His Second Coming, when He will "sit on the throne of His glory" and separate all the nations "as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats" (vv. 31-32). The sheep will be on His right hand, and the goats on the left.
The sheep receive the Kingdom prepared for them, because of their compassion, love, and almsgiving to those in need. The goats, on the other hand, receive condemnation because they did not care for their fellow man or show compassion upon him. For "inasmuch as [they] did not do it to one of the least of these, [they] did not do it to [Him]" (v. 45). Jesus concludes His parable by stating that those on the left "will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life" (v. 46).
What does this parable teach us?
In the two Sundays before we read this parable, we hear about God's patience and limitless compassion, and of His readiness to accept all who return to Him in repentance. On this third Sunday, He reminds us of a powerful, complementary truth. No one is so patient and merciful as God, but He does not forgive those who don't repent.
We can and should trust in Christ's love and mercy. But in hardening our hearts toward others and failing to help and care for them, we pass judgment on ourselves. Although God does not desire the death of a sinner, He expects us to turn from our wickedness and live. This requires active repentance and forgiveness on our part. It requires our working in synergy with God to turn from our sins and pursue virtue and righteousness. And the time for this is now. At the Second Coming, Christ will appear as the righteous Judge, "Who will render to every man according to his deeds" (Romans 2:6). By then, it will be too late to entreat God's mercy and forgiveness.
Love as the criterion for judgment
As Father Alexander Schmemann reminds us in his book Great Lent, sin is the absence of love. It is separation and isolation from God. And it is through love for our fellow man, because God is love, that we return into communion with Him.
When Christ comes to judge the world, He will judge us on whether we have loved our neighbor. Christian love means seeing Christ in others we encounter in our lives, no matter who they are, and treating them accordingly. This does not just mean showing mere "concern" for them, nor does it mean doing things to get "brownie points" with God. Rather, this means genuine love for the other person that results in loving action. We show this love when we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit those who are sick or in prison. If we did such things for the least of Christ's brethren, then we also did them for Christ. If we did not do such things for the least of the brethren, neither did we do them for Christ.
Що таке Страшний суд та чи дійсно він настільки страшний, як нам малює наша уява?
Страшний Суд – останній, загальний Суд Божий над світом, який відбудеться при другому Приході Господа Ісуса Христа. При цьому всі померлі люди воскреснуть, а ті, що живуть, зміняться (1Кор.15:51-52). На Страшному суді кожній людині буде визначено вічну долю, залежно від того, як вона провела своє земне життя.
У Євангелії суд Божий ніде не називається Страшним. У євангельській притчі Ісус Христос просто описує обставини суду і не дає йому жодного визначення. Апостол Павло, звертаючись до цієї теми, пише про судилище Христове, суд Христовий, день гніву й одкровення праведного суду від Бога і вживає прикметник страшний (жахливий) лише стосовно очікування суду тими, хто, бувши християнином, довільно грішить (Євр. 10:2 27).
Справді страшним суд стає для тих, хто відкинув Христа та Євангеліє, а також для людей черствих, немилосердних, які нехтують потребами своїх ближніх. І цей суд починається вже тут, на землі.
Для перших християн Друге Пришестя Христа та пов'язане з цією подією остаточне визначення долі людей у новій реальності не викликало почуття страху. Ранньохристиянська есхатологія (вчення про кінцеву долю світу і людства) була пройнята радісним і навіть нетерплячим очікуванням швидкого кінця світу.
Отже, назва «Страшний» закріпилася за майбутнім Судом не тому, що Господь постане перед очевидцями в якомусь грізному вигляді. Він постане перед очима тих, хто зібрався, у всій Своїй славі і величі, як Могутній і Справедливий Суддя. Це, звичайно, буде викликати у навколишніх страх, у когось — побожний, а у когось — відчайдушний страх. Жах і неспокійний трепет супроводжуватимуть грішників від знання того, що на цьому Суді будуть розкриті всі їхні гріховні справи, бажання, думки та помисли, і за все це доведеться дати відповідь перед непідкупним і нелицеприємним Суддею.
Крім того, Страшний Суд відбуватиметься публічно, перед обличчям усього світу: перед сонмом ангельських воїнств, перед мільярдами людей, у тому числі найближчими, рідними. На цьому останньому Суді грішник вже не зможе обдурити свою особисту совість, ні навколишніх, ні, зрозуміло, Всевидящого Суддю зручними для нього виправданнями. Світлом Божественної Правди, Світлом Істини висвітиться кожний злочин, дія чи бездіяльність нерозкаяних грішників.
Statement of the Council of Bishops Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora: Commemorating the Third Anniversary of the Genocidal Invasion of Ukraine
Beloved in the Lord: Christ is Among us!
With hearts burdened by the suffering of millions, yet steadfast in our faith in the mercy and justice of our Lord Jesus Christ, we, the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora, prayerfully mark the third anniversary of the brutal, unjustified and genocidal invasion by the Russian Federation into the peaceful and sovereign nation of Ukraine.
Three years of relentless aggression have brought immeasurable pain and suffering to Ukraine and her people. Millions of innocent men, women, and children have been displaced, forced to leave their ancestral homeland seeking refuge in foreign lands - throughout Europe, the United States, Australia, South America and beyond. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost - innocent victims of indiscriminate violence, including children torn from their families, and brave men and women of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in defense of their beloved homeland.
We weep with the Psalmist who cried, "How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?" (Psalm 13:1). Yet, as people of faith, we hold firm to the promise of our Savior: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted" (Matthew 5:4).
Today, we grieve not only for the lives lost but also for the thousands of children who have been forcibly removed from Ukraine and relocated to Russia, torn from their families and communities. We join the global outcry for justice and fervently pray for their swift reunion with their loved ones. As our Lord commands us to love and protect the innocent, we beseech all nations and organizations to continue their efforts to bring these children home.
We are reminded of Christ's words: "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). The sacrifice of Ukraine's defenders reflects this divine love - a selflessness that echoes the call of the Gospel to stand for truth, justice, and peace.
As we approach the solemn anniversary of February 24, 2025, we direct all parishes of our Church to dedicate Sunday, February 23, 2025, to the well-being of Ukraine. Following the Triple Litany of the Liturgy all clergy are instructed to read the prayer for the living attached hereto. At the conclusion of Divine Liturgy, a Memorial Service (Litia) will be held in every parish to pray for the repose of the souls of those who have perished – military and civilian – giving their lives in defense of Ukraine and all her people.
On February 23, 2025, we call upon every parish under our spiritual authority to ring their church bells – at 8:59p.m. Easter Time Zone, 7:59pm Central Time Zone, 6:59pm Mountain Time Zone and 5:59pm Pacific Time Zone - in the United States, and at the local times throughout the Diaspora, which correspond to 3:59am on February 24 in Ukraine. This act will mark the exact hour the aggression began three years ago. On February 24, we ask all faithful, clergy, and people of goodwill to spend the day in prayer, fasting, meditation, and silence, reflecting on the suffering of Ukraine and praying for peace and justice.
Let us unite in humility before God, praying for peace, for the end of suffering and for the triumph of love over hatred. As Christ's Body – the Holy Church, we reaffirm our commitment to charitable aid, financial support, and the spiritual well-being of all our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. We encourage all faithful to continue their generous contributions to the Ukrainian Relief Fund, accessible through our official website, www.uocofusa.org
Finally, we offer our blessings and prayers for the religious, civil, and military authorities of Ukraine, for all people of goodwill who have selflessly given their lives, resources, and talents in service to Ukraine, and for the faithful of our Church who have supported them fully. May our merciful God strengthen Ukraine and bring peace to her suffering people.

Prayer for the Peace and Well-Being of the People of Ukraine
O Lord of Hosts, God of mercy and justice, we come before You with hearts full of grief and hope as we mark the third anniversary of the unjustified aggression against Ukraine. We lift up to You the pain of millions - those who suffer, those who mourn, and those who fight for freedom and peace.
O Compassionate Lord, You who are the source of all consolation, hear the cries of Your people in Ukraine. Comfort the mothers and fathers who have lost their children, the children who have been torn from their families, and all those who have been displaced from their ancestral homes. Be their refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.
Lord, grant wisdom and courage to the leaders of Ukraine and to all who work to rebuild this land, that their efforts may be guided by Your love and truth. Inspire the worldwide community to act with compassion and resolve, working tirelessly to end the suffering and restore dignity to the lives of millions.
Disarm the hands of those who sow violence and transform their hearts to seek justice and love. We pray for the soldiers who defend their homeland with courage and selflessness, echoing the words of Your Son: "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). Grant them protection, strength, and peace in their hearts.
We beseech the Birth-Giver of God, who has always extended Her protection to the faithful - to spread Her holy mantle over Ukraine and her people. Intercede before Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that peace may reign once more in this land of faith and courage.
For You are the God of peace, love, and mercy, and to You we offer glory, together with Your only-begotten Son, and Your most Holy, Good, and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Улюблені у Господі: Христос посеред нас!
З серцем, обтяженим стражданнями мільйонів людей, але непохитні у вірі в милосердя і справедливість Господа нашого Ісуса Христа, ми, Собор Єпископів Української Православної Церкви США та Діаспори, молитовно відзначаємо третю річницю жорстокого, невиправданого і геноцидного вторгнення Російської Федерації в мирну і суверенну державу Україну.
Три роки безперервної агресії принесли Україні та її народу незмірний біль і страждання. Мільйони ні в чому невинних чоловіків, жінок і дітей були переміщені, змушені покинути батьківщину своїх предків у пошуках притулку на чужині - в Європі, США, Австралії, Південній Америці та інших країнах. Втрачено сотні тисяч життів - невинних жертв безпощадногонасильства, в тому числі дітей, відірваних від своїх родин, та відважних чоловіків і жінок Збройних Сил України, які пожертвували своїм життям, захищаючи улюблену Батьківщину.
Ми взиваємо разом із псалмоспівцем, який вигукував: "Доки, о Господи, зовсім будеш мене забувати? Доки ховатимеш лице твоє від мене?" (Псалом 13:1). Проте, як люди віри, ми міцно тримаємося обітниці нашого Спасителя: "Блаженні ті що плачуть, бо вони утішаться" (Матвія 5:4).
Сьогодні ми сумуємо не лише за втраченими життями, але й за тисячами дітей, які були примусово вивезені з України та переселені до Росії, відірвані від своїх родин та громад. Ми приєднуємося до глобального протесту за справедливість і палко молимося за їхнє швидке возз'єднання зі своїми близькими. Оскільки наш Господь наказує нам любити і захищати невинних, ми просимо всі країни та організації продовжувати свої зусилля, щоб повернути цих дітей додому.
Ми пригадуємо слова Христа: "Ніхто більшої любови не має над ту, як хто свою душу поклав би за друзів своїх" (Ів. 15:13). Жертва захисників України відображає цю божественну любов - самовідданість, яка перегукується з євангельським закликом стояти за правду, справедливість і мир.
Наближаючись до річниці 24 лютого 2025 року, ми закликаємо всі парафії нашої Церкви присвятити неділю, 23 лютого 2025 року, добробуту України. Після потрійної єктенії Літургії всім священнослужителям доручаємо прочитати молитву за живих, що додається до цього листа. По завершенні Божественної Літургії просимо відслужити Панахиду (Літію) за упокій душ загиблих - військових і цивільних, які віддали своє життя, захищаючи Україну та весь її народ.
Закликаємо кожну парафію під нашою духовною опікою 23 лютого 2025 року вдарити у церковні дзвони - о 8:59 за Східнім часом, о 7:59 за Центральним часом, о 6:59 за Гірським часом та о 5:59 за Тихоокеанським часом - у Сполучених Штатах, а також за місцевим часом по всій діаспорі, що відповідає 3:59 ранку 24 лютого в Україні. Цим актом ми відзначимо точну годину, коли три роки тому розпочалася агресія. Просимо всіх вірних, духовенство та людей доброї волі 24 лютого провести цей день у молитві, пості, роздумах та тиші, розмірковуючи над стражданнями України та молячись за мир і справедливість.
Об'єднаймося у смиренні перед Богом, молячись за мир, за припинення страждань і за перемогу любові над ненавистю. Як Тіло Христове - Свята Церква, ми підтверджуємо нашу відданість благодійній допомозі, фінансовій підтримці та духовному добробуту всіх наших братів і сестер в Україні. Молитва за Мир і Добробут Народу України
Господи Сил, Боже милосердя і справедливості, припадаємо до Тебе з серцем, сповненим скорботи і надії, у третю річницю невиправданої агресії проти України. Підносимо до Тебе біль мільйонів - тих, хто страждає, тих, хто сумує, і тих, хто бореться за свободу і мир.
Милосердний Господи, Ти, що є джерелом усякої втіхи, вислухай благання Твого народу в Україні. Утіш матерів і батьків, які втратили своїх дітей. Дітей, які були відірвані від своїх родин, і всіх тих, хто був змушений покинути рідні домівки. Будь для них притулком і силою, справжньою допомогою в часі біди.
Господи, даруй мудрість і відвагу лідерам України та всім, хто працює над відбудовою цієї землі, щоб їхні зусилля спрямовувалися Твоєю любов'ю і правдою. Надихни світову спільноту діяти зі співчуттям і рішучістю, невтомно працюючи, щоб покласти край стражданням і повернути гідність у життя мільйонів людей.
Обеззброй руки тих, хто сіє насильство, і переміни їхні серця, щоб вони шукали справедливості та любові. Ми молимося за воїнів, які мужньо і самовіддано захищають свою Батьківщину, повторюючи слова Твого Сина: "Ніхто більшої любови не має над ту, як хто свою душу поклав би за друзів своїх" (Ів. 15:13). Подай їм захист, силу та мир у серці.
Богородицю, котра невтомно захищає вірних, благаємо, щоб розпростерла Свій святий покров над Україною та її народом. Заступися перед Твоїм Сином, Господом нашим Ісусом Христом, щоб на цій землі віри і відваги знову запанував мир.
Бо Ти є Бог миру, любові і милосердя, і Тобі славу возсилаємо з Єдинородним Твоїм Сином і Пресвятим, і Благим, і Животворящим Твоїм Духом, нині, і повсякчас, і на віки вічні. Амінь.
