Браття, і як, за даною нам благодаттю, маємо різні дарування, то, чи маєш пророцтво, пророкуй за мірою віри; чи маєш служіння, перебувай у служінні; чи учитель,– у навчанні; чи утішитель, утішай; хто роздає, роздавай у простоті; начальник, начальствуй зі старанністю; хто милосердствує, милосердствуй зі щирістю. Любов хай буде нелицемірна; відвертайтесь зла, прихиляйтесь до добра; будьте братолюбні один до одного з ніжністю; випереджайте один одного шанобливістю; у старанності не ослабляйтесь; духом палайте; Господу служіть; утішайтесь надією; в скорботах будьте терпеливі; в молитві постійні; у потребах святих беріть участь; будьте гостинні до подорожніх. Від Матфея 9:1-8

Тоді Він, увійшовши в човен, переплив назад і прибув до Свого міста. І ось, принесли до Нього розслабленого, покладеного на постелі. І, бачачи віру їхню, Ісус сказав розслабленому: дерзай, чадо! прощаються тобі гріхи твої! При цьому деякі з книжників сказали в собі: Він богохульствує. Ісус же, вбачаючи помисли їхні, промовив: навіщо ви думаєте лукаве в серцях ваших? Бо що легше сказати: прощаються тобі гріхи, чи сказати: встань і ходи? Але щоб знали ви, що Син Людський має владу на землі прощати гріхи,– тоді говорить розслабленому: встань, візьми постіль твою, і йди до дому твого. І він встав, взяв постіль свою і пішов до дому свого. Народ же, побачивши це, здивувався і прославив Бога, Котрий дав таку владу людям.

Pride Divides but Humility Unites

The word of the day is "received." It takes the spiritual gift of discernment to recognize the difference between what comes from our own ego and what comes from the Spirit of Christ. What comes from our ego bolsters our pride. But what comes from Christ engenders our humility. Pride divides us from others. But in humility we can be united with others.

In our reading of 1 Cor. 4:5-8, St. Paul sternly rebukes the boasting of the Corinthians. Their judgments of each other are driving a wedge between them. And they are wielding their alleged superior wisdom and knowledge against one another. But St. Paul pulls out their pride by the roots. He asks, who has planted the divisions among you? "Who is making you differ from one another?" (1 Cor. 4:7). And then he digs up the root of their divisions. "What do you have that you did not receive?" (1 Cor. 4:7).

What We Have Is Cause for Humility

Today our reading prompts us to reflect on what we have received from the Lord without reason for boasting but with cause for humility.

At the beginning of his letter, the Apostle said, "…you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge" (1 Cor.1:5)). And in chapter 3 he added, "… all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come – all are yours" (1 Cor. 3:22). But he went on, "And you are Christ's and Christ is God's" (1 Cor. 3:24).

God Has Already Supplied Them with Every Blessing

Paul has pointed out that the Corinthians are called to be Christ's own, and that He has already supplied His own with every blessing. But the problem is that the Corinthians are claiming even more than God gives. They are bragging that they have acquired even loftier wisdom and knowledge, even greater blessings, even larger riches, and even higher kingship (1 Cor. 4:8).

But they have not received these better things from Christ. Their own ego has deceived them to think that they are on a higher spiritual level than others. But this claim has caused bitter conflicts in the Corinthian congregation. When one pretends to be better than others, others will respond with their own claims of superiority. So begins a vicious cycle of allegation and recrimination driven by pride. Each side will define itself by its contrast with the others in knowledge, spiritual gifts, and status before God. And each side will choose a champion of its arrogance. As Paul puts it, "You are puffed up on behalf of one against the other" (OSB vs. 6).

Humility Is the Only Weapon Against Pride

Against such pride there is only one recourse, humility. Humility will not think of itself as different from others. Humility will not go beyond what is written in the scriptures. Humility will not think it is already "full," that is, "satisfied" (Strong's #2880). It will not think of itself as spiritually rich. Humbleness will not believe that it already reigns in the kingdom of God (OSB vs. 8).

And in summary humility will realize that whatever wisdom, knowledge, spiritual gifts, and blessings it possesses, it has received.

For Reflection

The Lord said, "You will know them by their fruits (NKJV Matthew 7:1). One test of spiritual attainment is peace. Those who are truly advanced in the Spirit have peace of mind and share the peace of God. St. Anatoly of Optina said, "Wherever God is — there is peace. And the opposite is self-evident: where there is envy, enmity, impatience, self-love — there is the devil. Wherever the devil is — there, everything is ruinous, proud and hostile."[i] Today we see the prime example of these fruits of the devil in the prideful and divisive behavior of the Corinthians.

Attaining Peace in the Way of St. Anatoly

How do we attain peace? We put aside all that St. Anatoly lists as the signs of pride, hostility, and destructiveness. And we acquire the virtue of contentment. Such peace of mind comes when we open our hands to receive whatever God wills to give us and when we open our hearts to receive nothing but Him.

This serene attitude contrasts with the ceaseless quest to have and hold by our own efforts. And it is the opposite of the claim that we have achieved what we have by our own works or worthiness.

To gain contentment we might reflect on the truth that we have received from the Lord whatever wisdom, knowledge, and blessings that we have. Moreover, He has promised that He will supply whatever else that we need for eternal life and salvation. In this peace of mind and heart we can cultivate the virtues of humility and gratitude and so root out pride from our hearts.

Martyr Hyacinth of Caesarea, in Cappadocia, and those with him

Saint Hyacinth, a native of Caesarea in Cappadocia, was raised in a Christian family. The emperor Trajan made the boy his "cubicularius" (chamberlain), unaware that he was a secret Christian.

One day, while the emperor and his entourage were offering sacrifice to idols, the young Hyacinth remained at the palace, shut himself up in a small room, and prayed fervently to the Lord Jesus Christ. One of the servants overheard him praying and denounced him to the emperor. He said that although Hyacinth was entrusted with an imperial position, he did not honor the Roman gods, and was secretly praying to Christ.

Hyacinth was brought to trial before Trajan, who tried to persuade him to deny Christ and sacrifice to the deaf and dumb idols, but the holy martyr remained steadfast and declared that he was a Christian. He was whipped and thrown into prison, where the only food given to him was what had already been offered to the idols. They hoped that he would be overcome with hunger and thirst and eat it. Saint Hyacinth did not eat the food, and he died after thirty-eight days. When they came to torture him again, they found his dead body.

The jailer saw two angels in the cell. One covered the saint's body with his own garment, and the other placed a crown of glory on his head.

The twelve-year-old Hyacinth suffered for Christ in the year 108 in the city of Rome. Later, the saint's relics were transferred to Caesarea.

Saints Diomedes, Eulampius, Asclepiodotus, and Golinduc also suffered with Saint Hyacinth.

Мученик Якінф Римський

Святий мученик Якинф, родом із Кесарії Каппадокійської, виріс у християнській родині. Римський імператор Траян (98-117) поставив його своїм кубікуларієм (постільничим).

Одного разу під час язичницького свята імператор Траян бенкетував у капищі зі своїми наближеними, насичуючись ідоложертвенною їжею, а юнак Якинф, залишившись у палаці, замкнувся в невеличкій кімнаті й старанно молився Господу Ісусу Христу. Слова молитви почув один зі слуг. Він доніс імператору, що Якинф, порушуючи царський наказ, не шанує римських божеств, але таємно молиться Христу.

Якинфа негайно схопили і привели до Траяна. Імператор запропонував йому скуштувати ідоложертвенного м'яса, але святий мужньо відмовився й оголосив себе християнином. За наказом Траяна святого мученика після жорстоких катувань ув'язнили в темницю, мучили голодом і спрагою, щоб змусити з'їсти ідольську їжу. На 38-й день один із вартових, який приніс ідоложертвенне м'ясо, побачив поруч із мучеником Ангелів, які вбирали його у світлий одяг і покладали на голову його вінець.

Мучителі вирішили продовжити суд над святим, але знайшли його в темниці померлим. Двадцятирічний Якинф помер 108 року в місті Римі. Мощі святого згодом перенесли до Кесарії.

Преподобний Олександр Константинопольський

Преподобний Олександр, першопочатківець обителі "Невсипущих", народився в Азії і здобув освіту в Константинополі. Він перебував деякий час на військовій службі, проте його вабило інше покликання: він залишив світ і прийняв постриг в одній з пустельних сирійських обителей поблизу Антіохії під керівництвом ігумена Іллі. Чотири роки він провів у суворому послуху і чернечих подвигах, після чого отримав благословення ігумена на пустельножительство. Йдучи в пустелю, преподобний нічого не взяв із собою з монастиря, крім Євангелія. Преподобний подвизався в пустелі сім років. Потім Господь покликав його на проповідь язичникам. Святий навернув до Христа місцевого градоначальника Равула, який згодом був удостоєний святительського сану і 30 років керував єпископською кафедрою в місті Едесі. Одночасно з Равулом Хрещення прийняли всі місцеві жителі, які перед таїнством спалили на площі своїх ідолів. Утвердивши у вірі новонавернених, преподобний Олександр знову пішов у пустелю, де випадково потрапив у печеру розбійників. Не злякавшись смерті, що загрожувала йому, він проповідував їм Євангеліє і переконав покаятися. Дійсно, всі розбійники щиро покаялися, прийняли Святе Хрещення, а свій вертеп перетворили на монастир, де перебували в покаянні й молитві. Преподобний Олександр поставив їм ігумена, дав устав, а сам пішов ще далі в пустелю. Кілька років він жив у повній самоті. Але й туди почали стікатися до преподобного любителі безмовності. Виник монастир, що налічував до 400 ченців. Бажаючи в цьому монастирі встановити безперервне славослів'я Господу, преподобний три роки молився, щоб Творець відкрив йому Свою волю, і, отримавши одкровення, запровадив у монастирі наступний порядок: усіх ченців було розділено на 24 молитовні варти. Змінюючись щогодини, день і ніч вони співали на два лики псалми Давида, перериваючись лише на час звершення Богослужіння. Обитель отримала найменування "невсипущих", тому що подвижники цілодобово співали Богові.

Двадцять років правив преподобний Олександр монастирем на Євфраті. Потім, залишивши ігуменом одного зі своїх учнів, досвідченого старця Трохима, вирушив він з обраною братією містами, що межували з Персією, з проповіддю Євангелія серед язичників. Після цієї місіонерської подорожі, преподобний Олександр зі своїми ченцями жив деякий час в Антіохії. Там він побудував для жителів міста церкву, лікарню і будинок для приймання диваків на кошти, які рясно надходили в його розпорядження від милосердних антіохійців. Однак, через підступи злих заздрісників, преподобний Олександр змушений був піти до Константинополя. Тут він заснував новий монастир, у якому також запровадив статут "невсипущих". У Константинополі преподобний Олександр і його ченці постраждали від єретиків несторіан, зазнавши побоїв і ув'язнення. Після того, як минула буря єретичних хвилювань, преподобний Олександр провів кінець свого життя в заснованому ним Константинопольському монастирі. Помер він у глибокій старості близько 430 року, після 50 років безперервних чернечих подвигів.
