Venerable Sisoes the Great

Saint Sisoes the Great (+ 429) was a solitary monk, pursuing asceticism in the Egyptian desert in a cave sanctified by the prayerful labors of his predecessor, Saint Anthony the Great (January 17). For his sixty years of labor in the desert, Saint Sisoes attained to sublime spiritual purity and he was granted the gift of wonderworking, so that by his prayers he once restored a dead child back to life.

Extremely strict with himself, Abba Sisoes was very merciful and compassionate to others, and he received everyone with love. To those who visited him, the saint first of all always taught humility. When one of the monks asked how he might attain to a constant remembrance of God, Saint Sisoes remarked, "That is no great thing, my son, but it is a great thing to regard yourself as inferior to everyone else. This leads to the acquisition of humility." Asked by the monks whether one year is sufficient for repentance if a brother sins, Abba Sisoes said, "I trust in the mercy of God that if such a man repents with all his heart, then God will accept his repentance in three days."

When Saint Sisoes lay upon his deathbed, the disciples surrounding the Elder saw that his face shone like the sun. They asked the dying man what he saw. Abba Sisoes replied that he saw Saint Anthony, the prophets, and the apostles. His face increased in brightness, and he spoke with someone. The monks asked, "With whom are you speaking, Father?" He said that angels had come for his soul, and he was entreating them to give him a little more time for repentance. The monks said, "You have no need for repentance, Father." Saint Sisoes said with great humility, "I do not think that I have even begun to repent."

After these words the face of the holy abba shone so brightly that the brethren were not able to look upon him. Saint Sisoes told them that he saw the Lord Himself. Then there was a flash like lightning, and a fragrant odor, and Abba Sisoes departed to the Heavenly Kingdom.

Преподобний Сисой Великий († 429) був ченцем-відлюдником і подвизався в Єгипетській пустелі в печері, освяченій молитовними трудами його попередника, преподобного Антонія Великого. За шістдесят років пустельного подвигу преподобний Сисой досягнув вискоої духовної чистоти й одержав дар чудотворіння, так що одного разу навіть своєю молитвою повернув до життя померлого отрока.

Надзвичайно суворий до себе, преподобний Сисой був дуже милостивий та співчутливий до ближніх і всіх приймав з любов'ю. Тих, хто відвідував його, преподобний завжди перш за все навчав смирення. На запитання одного пустельника, як він міг досягнути безперестанної пам'яті про Бога, преподобний зауважив: «Це ще небагато, сину мій, важливіше за те — вважати себе нижчим за всіх, тому що таке приниження сприяє придбанню смирення».

Коли ченці спитали преподобного Сисоя, чи достатньо одного року для покаяння брату, який впав у гріх, він сказав: «Я вірую в милосердя Людинолюбця Бога, і якщо людина покається всією душею, то Бог прийме її покаяння протягом трьох днів».

У час, коли преподобний Сисой лежав на смертному одрі, учні, які оточували старця, побачили, що лице його просяяло. Вони спитали вчителя, що він бачить. Авва Сисой відповів, що споглядає святих пророків і апостолів. Учні запитали, з ким розмовляє преподобний, і він мовив, що за його душею прийшли ангели, а він просить їх дати йому ще хоча б короткий час на покаяння. «Тобі, отче, немає потреби в покаянні», — заперечили учні. Але преподобний Сисой, зі свого великого смирення, відповів: «Істинно я не знаю, чи поклав я хоча б початок покаяння мого».

Після цих слів обличчя святого авви просяяло так, що братія не наважувалися на нього дивитися. Преподобний встигнув сказати їм, що бачить Самого Господа, і свята душа його відійшла в Царство Небесне.

Claim the Treasure

A news item told about an express package that reached an address in England from a South African town. The man who was to receive the box refused to pay the delivery charges. Consequently, for about fourteen years that unclaimed box was used as a footstool in the express office. One day, purely out of curiosity, at an auction a man bid for it at a very low price.

When he opened it later he was greatly astonished to find several thousand pounds of sterling in English bank notes. Because the original consignee had refused to pay the comparatively small delivery charges, he had missed receiving a small fortune.

People are often just that shortsighted. They deprive themselves of life's richest blessings simply because they fail to claim them. We have within our reach the greatest blessings of all: adoption as sons and daughters of God, all of God's care, protection, love, and life eternal in the presence of God. We have received these blessings through baptism. But many of us have yet to claim this treasure. We are using it as a footstool. We refused to pay the delivery charges. We refuse to take time for God, to listen to His instructions, to study His word, to repent of our sins, to seek His forgiveness, to receive Him with cleansed souls through the Eucharist, to walk in the light of His teaching in all that we do, and to make Him our real and our personal Lord and Master.

В одній газетній замітці розповідалося про експрес-посилку, яка прибула за адресою в Англії з міста в Південній Африці. Чоловік, який мав її отримати, відмовився сплатити витрати на доставку. Відтак упродовж приблизно чотирнадцяти років ця незатребувана коробка слугувала підставкою для ніг у експрес-конторі. Одного разу, суто з цікавості, на аукціоні хтось купив її за дуже низьку ціну.

Коли пізніше він її відкрив, то був вкрай вражений, знайшовши там кілька тисяч фунтів стерлінгів англійськими банкнотами. Оскільки первісний отримувач відмовився сплатити порівняно невелику суму за доставку, він втратив невеличкий статок.

Люди часто бувають саме такими недалекоглядними. Вони позбавляють себе найбагатших благословень життя лише тому, що не заявляють на них прав. У межах нашої досяжності — найбільші з усіх благословень: усиновлення як синів і дочок Божих, вся Божа турбота, захист, любов і вічне життя в присутності Бога. Ми отримали ці благословення через хрещення. Але багато хто з нас досі не заявив прав на цей скарб. Ми використовуємо його як підставку для ніг. Ми відмовилися сплатити витрати на доставку. Ми відмовляємося приділяти час Богові, слухати Його настанови, вивчати Його слово, каятися у своїх гріхах, шукати Його прощення, приймати Його очищеною душею через Євхаристію, ходити у світлі Його вчення в усьому, що робимо, і зробити Його своїм справжнім і особистим Господом і Владикою.

Our successful 97th Ukrainian Day Festival is now behind us and in St. John's history book.  Along with it are wonderful memories of our Ukrainian culture, cuisine, and hospitality that we shared with our friends and neighbors thanks to the diligence and hard work of our parishioners and the support of our suppliers and sponsors.  Starting today, we shall devote our undivided attention to continuing to work on our long to-do list in preparation for our church's 100th Anniversary in October. On this special occasion we shall remember our immigrant founders and celebrate the legacy of our Orthodox faith, families, and traditions which has been bestowed upon us through generations.

As we continue our preparations for this auspicious celebration, we would be remised not to count our countless blessings through the years and remember our roots and brethren in Ukraine. Today, those in our ancestral homeland are living under daily fire, the threat of death, and destruction, as described in the compassionate appeal for prayers and donations each of us received from our Council of Bishops.  We kindly ask that you read and heed this appeal and consider making a direct donation to the Ukrainian Relief Fund (URF) of the UOC of the USA, or to our St. John's Humanitarian Fund, which has channeled significant funds to the URF over the past 12 years.

With the growing number of conflicts and disasters in our world, it comes as no surprise that donations to our humanitarian fund have diminished over time. Nevertheless, with God's help, we continue to support vital programs in Ukraine to the extent possible. In the second quarter of 2026, we donated $5,000 in the name of St. John's to the SEED program which is dedicated to securing the future of Ukraine through education, by empowering teachers who inspire, support, and strengthen the next generation in Ukraine.  In addition, SEED was blessed to receive a matching donation of $5,000 dollars thanks to the kind generosity of the Gorick family.  These two donations will significantly increase the number and value of mini grants awarded to educators in war torn Ukraine in the coming school year.

We are also pleased to report that our advocacy efforts have yielded incredibly positive results.  In June, our 19th District of New York, Congressman Josh Riley, advised us that he voted yes on H.R. 2913 the Ukraine Support Act, to send more supplies to Ukraine and impose tougher sanctions on Russia. We were also gratified to learn that upon our encouragement Congressman Riley has joined the Congressional Ukraine Caucus where he will be our communities voice in support of Ukraine.

In closing this quarterly report, we extend our thanks to all who continue to hold Ukraine in their hearts and prayers in memory and in honor of their loved ones during this extraordinarily challenging time.  Your continued support and compassion have an influence on the lives of hundreds and are appreciated.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Mark Hatala, and to all our parishioners and guests who worked so hard all day yesterday during our Ukrainian Day Festival. Thank you to our Ukrainian Dance Instructors and dancers, our Choir, and the band Khvylia — you filled the day with beauty, joy, and pride in our heritage. Thank you to our supporters and sponsors, whose generosity made it all possible. Without every one of you, none of this would have happened.

Despite all the challenges, we were able to enjoy the day together and give glory to God — for everything we have, and everything we don't have, but for everything we need to show our love and support for one another as Christians.

Please note: seating is limited, and registration is on a first come, first served basis — so don't delay in reserving your spot!

How to reserve:

Parishioners may reserve throughout the month of July, either online or in person with Lisa Ferrante or Mary Ann Klish.

Please honor your reservation, and promptly cancel if your plans change so someone else may attend.

Family members of parishioners who are not themselves current parish members are asked to pay $50 per adult and $25 per child.

Non-parishioners: Registration opens August 1, 2026, on a first come, first served basis, at $50 per adult and $25 per child.
