Blessed Constantine, Metropolitan of Kyiv

In 1147 Saint Igor Ol'govich (Sept. 19, June 5) was defeated and captured by Izyaslav Mstyslavich, the grandson of Saint Volodymyr (July 15). Izyaslav then replaced Saint Igor as Great Prince.

The See of Kyiv had been left vacant after the death of Metropolitan Michael in 1145, and Izyaslav chose the learned Schemamonk Clement of Smolensk to succeed him. He wanted the candidate to be consecrated by bishops in Rus, instead of sending him to Constantinople for consecration. Because of the great distance between Kyiv and Constantinople Izyaslav called a council of bishops, and ordered them to consecrate Clement as Metropolitan of Kyiv.

Not all of the bishops were in agreement with this plan, notably the holy Archbishop Niphon of Novgorod (April 8). Other hierarchs also refused to participate in the consecration without the blessing of the Patriarch of Constantinople. Clement's consecration took place in spite of the objections that had been raised.

After Izyaslav's reign, he was succeeded by Yuri (George) Dolgoruky. This Great Prince regarded the consecration as illegal and uncanonical, and so he sent Saint Constantine (Smolyatich) to Constantinople to be consecrated as Metropolitan of Kyiv by the Patriarch. Upon his return to Kyiv, Saint Constantine, by the authority of the Patriarch, deposed Clement from his rank, and also deposed those who had been ordained by him.

When the Great Prince Yuri completed the course of his life disputes arose over who should succeed him as Great Prince. There was also disagreement about who was the rightful Metropolitan of Kyiv, and Izyaslav's son Mstyslav supported Clement. Therefore, the princes of Rus' decided that both Clement and Constantine should be deposed, and requested the Patriarch of Constantinople to send them a new Metropolitan for Kyiv.

Hoping to put an end to the disputes among the princes, the Patriarch sent Theodore to Kyiv as the new Metropolitan. Saint Constantine, wishing to avoid further tumult in the Church, stepped down as Metropolitan and went to Chernigiv, where he became gravely ill.

Feeling that he was approaching the end of his life, Saint Constantine composed a Testament, which he entrusted to Bishop Anthony of Chernigov. He also made Bishop Anthony promise that he would fulfill all the directives contained in the Testament after Constantine's death.

When Saint Constantine reposed in 1159, Bishop Anthony took the Testament to Prince Svyatoslav of Chernigiv, broke the seal, and read the document aloud. One of the provisions of the Testament was that Saint Constantine's body should not be buried, but dragged out of the city to be left as food for dogs. This was because he felt responsible for the discord in the Church.

Everyone who heard the reading of the Testament was filled with horror. Prince Svyatoslav told the bishop to do as he saw fit. Since he had given his promise to Saint Constantine to abide by the terms of the Testament, he did not dare to go back on his word. So the saint's body was taken from the city and left in a field.

On that very day the sky grew dark over Kyiv, and strong winds, earthquakes, thunder and lightning broke out. It is said that eight people were hit by lightning at the same time.

Prince Rostyslav of Kyiv was in Povari at Vyshgorod at the time. He had received news of the death of Metropolitan Constantine, so he sent messages to the Church of the Holy Wisdom and to other churches, asking for all-night vigils to be conducted throughout the city. He believed that the citizens of Kyiv were being punished by the Lord for their sins.

While all of these things were taking place in Kyiv, the sun shone brightly in Chernigiv. However, three pillars of fire appeared at night over the body of Saint Constantine. Seeing this marvel, many were filled with fear. On the third day that the body lay in the field, Prince Svyatoslav ordered that the body of the Metropolitan be buried with all the honor befitting his rank.

The body of the saint was carried into the city and buried in the church of the Savior, where Saint Igor, who was killed by the inhabitants of Kyiv, had also been interred. After the burial of Saint Constantine, peace returned to Kyiv, and all the people glorified God.

Святитель Константин, митрополит Київський і всієї Русі, жив у XII столітті. Тоді в 1147 році великий князь Ізяслав Мстиславич і собор руських єпископів поставили митрополитом Київським Климента Смолятича без участі Константинопольського патріарха, але не всі єпископи погодилися із цим, і в Руській Церкві почалася смута.

З ініціативи князя Юрія Долгорукого були проведені успішні переговори з Константинополем. У січні 1156 року в Константинополі був висвячений на Київську кафедру митрополит Константин, який того ж року приїхав до Києва. Перед відправленням у свою північну митрополію він у січні того ж року взяв участь у Константинопольському Соборі, котрий обговорював питання про Євхаристійну Жертву.

Церковний Собор Руської Церкви в складі митрополита Константина і єпископів Косми Полоцького й Мануїла Смоленського приступив до відновлення канонічних норм церковного життя: священнодійства митрополита Климента були «испровергнуты», а князь Ізяслав Мстиславич підданий суворому соборному осуду.

Митрополит Константин заміщав архієрейські кафедри єпископами-греками, прагнучи тим самим унеможливити повторення Собору 1147 року. У Суздалі на місце позбавленого кафедри Нестора був призначений грек Леон, до Чернігова був призначений грек Антоній. Цілком імовірно, що греком був і Косма, поставлений єпископом на новостворену кафедру в Галичі. У Переяславлі-Заліському був поставлений єпископ Василій, а в Новгороді Великому на віче був вибраний єпископом Аркадій.

Мстислав, син відданого анафемі князя Ізяслава, вимагав під час зведення на київський престол дядька свого Ростислава Смоленського, щоб митрополит Климент знову керував Руською Церквою, тому що прибулець грек, говорив він, кляв нібито пам'ять батька його. Але Ростислав не хотів і слухати про Климента, вибраного, на його думку, неправильно собором руських єпископів без бажання патріарха Царгородського. Князі погодилися нарешті між собою, щоб не бути митрополитом ні тому, ні іншому, а покликати нового із Царгорода. Митрополит Константин, прагнучи уникнути помсти Мстислава, відійшов до Чернігова, де княжив Святослав Ольгович, а єпископом був грек Антоній.

Тут святитель раптово занедужав. Тоді він став шкодувати і каятися в занадто строгому покаранні учасників поставлення на Київську митрополію Климента. Митрополит Константин покликав єпископа Антонія і вручив йому свій заповіт. Антоній заприсягся виконати все, що в ньому написано.

Коли, після кончини митрополита Константина, єпископ Антоній розгорнув перед князем Святославом заповіт і прочитав його, усі присутні були вражені: «По умертвии моем не погребите тела моего, но повергше его на землю и поцеплеше ужем за нози и извлекше из града, поверзите на оном месте, имя нарек ему, псом на расхищение».

Здивувалися князь і єпископ великому його смиренномудрості, і Антоній, хоча й з жахом та багатьма сльозами, виконав його заповіт. Жахнувся й народ цій нечуваній події. Самозасуджене тіло лежало три дні й три ночі непошкодженим; ніякий звір не міг до нього доторкнутися, і щоночі виднілися над ним вогненні стовпи.

Тоді князь Святослав, охоплений страхом суду Божого, послав сказати про те великому князю Ростиславу, котрий правив у Києві, а тим часом велів підняти святителя Христова і з великою честю нести в місто до Спасо-Преображенського собору. Там покладено було в теремці тіло його, поруч з князем Ігорем Ярославовичем.

Протягом усіх цих трьох днів у Києві вирувала буря, а також і в інших місцях, так що намет Ростислава, який стояв на полі під Вишгородом, був розтрощений. Блискавка поразила двох пресвітерів, одного диякона і чотирьох мирських людей. Але в Чернігові в усі ці дні яскраво світило сонце, і, як тільки було поховано тіло святителя, всюди настала тиша.

Розчулився великий князь Ростислав і послав по всіх церквах звершувати поминання покійного святителя, явно сповідуючи, що Господь послав кару цю за його власну жорстокосердість. Подібно до того, як Господь не залишив розбійника, котрий розкаявся, так милосердний Владика прийняв і плоди покаяння, принесені митрополитом Константином — біля його мощей стали відбуватися численні чудесні зцілення.

We are pleased to announce that approval has been granted for the installation of a new HVAC system in the MC Hall and Kitchen — a long-awaited upgrade that will make our space more comfortable for everyone.
