Сину Феофіле, трапилось, що Петро, коли обходив усіх, прийшов і до святих, які жили в Лідді. Там знайшов він одного чоловіка, на ім'я Еней, який уже вісім років лежав на постелі і був розслаблений. Петро сказав йому: Енею! зціляє тебе Ісус Христос; встань з постелі твоєї. І він зараз же встав. І бачили його всі жителі в Лідді і Сароні, які і навернулися до Господа. В Іоппії ж була одна учениця, на ім'я Тавіфа, що значить «сарна»; вона була сповнена добрих діл і творила багато милостині. Сталося ж у ті дні, що вона занедужала й померла. Її омили і поклали в горниці. Лідда ж була поблизу Іоппії, то учні, почувши, що Петро перебуває там, послали до нього двох чоловік просити, щоб він не забарився прийти до них. Петро, вставши, пішов з ними; і коли він прийшов, завели його в горницю, і всі вдовиці із слізьми стали перед ним і показували сорочки та плаття, що їх робила Сарна, живучи з ними. Петро вислав усіх і, ставши на коліна, помолився, і, звернувшись до тіла, сказав: Тавіфо! встань. І вона відкрила очі свої і, побачивши Петра, сіла. Він подав їй руку, підвів її, і, покликавши святих і вдовиць, поставив її перед ними живою. Це стало відомим по всій Іоппії, і багато хто увірував у Господа.

Після цього було іудейське свято, і прийшов Ісус до Ієрусалима. В Ієрусалимі ж біля Овечих воріт є купальня, що по-єврейськи зветься Віфезда, яка мала п'ять критих ходів. У них лежало багато хворих, сліпих, кривих, сухих, що чекали руху води, бо Ангел Господній щороку сходив у купальню і збурював воду, і хто перший входив у неї після збурення води, той одужував, хоч би яку недугу мав. Тут був чоловік, який хворів тридцять вісім років. Ісус, побачивши, що він лежить, і знаючи, що вже довго хворіє, говорить йому: чи хочеш бути здоровим? Недужий відповів Йому: так, Господи; але чоловіка не маю, щоб, коли збуриться вода, опустив мене в купальню; коли ж я приходжу, інший вже поперед мене входить. Ісус говорить йому: встань, візьми постіль твою і ходи. І він одразу одужав, взяв постіль свою і пішов. Того дня була субота. Тому іудеї говорили зціленому: сьогодні субота, і не слід тобі було брати постіль свою. Він відповів їм: Хто зцілив мене, Той сказав мені: візьми постіль твою і ходи. Його спитали: хто Той Чоловік, Котрий сказав тобі: візьми постіль твою і ходи? А зцілений не знав, хто Він, бо Ісус зник у народі, що був на тому місці. Потім Ісус зустрів його в храмі і сказав йому: ось, ти одужав; не гріши більше, щоб з тобою не трапилось чого гіршого. Чоловік цей пішов і сказав іудеям, що Той, Хто зцілив його, є Ісус.

Arising to Newness of Life: Three Narratives and Our Story

Christ is Risen!

The word of the day is "arise."  The Lord has the power to lift the fallen and to command those who are lying prone in sickness, sin, and death to arise. Today on this Sunday of the Paralytic, we learn about three incidents when those who are bound to their beds heard the command to "Rise up."  Two of those who heard the order to arise were paralytics, one in our Gospel and one in our Epistle reading. The last and most spectacular example was the beloved believer Dorcas who had died. In our reading of Acts 9:32-42, Peter said, "Tabitha, arise," and she opened her eyes, looked at Peter, and sat up (OSB vs. 40).

Today as we hear of the command to "arise," we think of Paul who also speaks of arising from death to life. The apostle wrote in Romans, "Awake, you who sleep. Arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light" (OSB Ephesians 5:14). When we compare Paul's words with the events of our readings from Acts and the Gospel of John, we learn that the Lord calls us to rise up from "spiritual death."

Miracles of Rising from Death to Life

The three miracles that we recall today are part of a set. The healing of Aeneas, the paralytic in Acts (vs. 32-25), parallels the Lord's healing of the person with paralysis at the pool by the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem (John 5:1-15). And the raising of Dorcas (vs. 36-42) parallels the raising of the daughter of Jairus in the Gospels (e.g., OSB Luke 8:40-42; 49-56).

All these stories use terms that refer to arising from death to life. Peter's commands of both the paralyzed Aeneas, and the deceased Dorcus use the Greek word (anatomy). This term is derived from the term "to stand up." It denotes a change of position from lying down to rising to an upright state" (Strong's #450, 27). As you know from our Easter greeting in Greek (Christos anesti), it is the key term to describe Christ's resurrection.

However, for the paralyzed man at the pool and the daughter of Jairus, the term that the Gospel writers use is (egeiró), whose basic meaning is to "wake from sleep" and, thus, to "wake from the dead" (Strong's #1453, 74-75). Thus, the same descriptions are used for the miracles of being raised from physical death and raised from paralysis. We can conclude that paralysis is a metaphor for death and that all these stories are stories of the resurrection to life in Christ.

Resurrection from Spiritual Death

Certainly, these wonders confirm the promise of our resurrection from physical death on the last day (John 6:4). Yet, they also remind us of our resurrection from spiritual death. Remember that St. Paul writes that we once were "dead in trespasses and sins" (OSB Ephesians 2:1). Our worldly desires paralyzed us, and our disobedience subjected us to the loss of spiritual life. We were as flat on our backs as the paralytics that we hear about today. And we were as lifeless as Dorcas, whose body lay in the Upper Room in Joppa.

But Paul proclaims that we experienced a resurrection from the dead. He declares, "God who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses and sins, made us alive together with Christ…" (OSB Ephesians 2:4-6).

Be Upright, Awake, and Alive

Accordingly, we can apply these stories of the call to arise to ourselves just as they applied to the two paralytics, to the daughter of Jairus, and to Dorcus. They urge and encourage us to stand upright, to keep awake, and to come alive as we live out our baptism in this world.

In this vein, St. Paul urged the Romans to love their neighbor and to "do this knowing that now it is high time to awake from out of sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed" (OSB Romans 13:11). And the apostle referred to Isaiah when he urged that we should awake from sleep and arise from the dead so that Christ can give us light (Ephesians 5:14).

Therefore, Paul teaches us that we should shake off any drowsiness of worldliness. We should resist any return of the spiritual paralysis of ungodly habits. We should listen to the command of God and rise up from the deadness of disobedience of His will and indifference to the prompting of the Spirit.

For Reflection

The Gospel reverses our unenlightened understandings of what is life and what is death. St. Maximus wrote, "The Holy Gospel teaches men to reject life according to the flesh and to embrace life according to the Spirit" (G.E.H. Palmer 1981, 176). This early writer of the Philokalia, the Orthodox manual on asceticism, only echoes St. Paul's admonition: "Reckon yourselves dead indeed to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (OSB Romans 6:11).

In the same vein, the Word of God commands us to arise today. When we answer this charge, we rise up from death to life. We are raised once again just as we were lifted up in our baptism. As St. Maximus wrote, "Those who are aroused to newness of life no longer "live their own life but have Christ living in the soul alone" (Gal. 2:20) (G.E.H. Palmer 1981, 176).

We Are Dead… And Alive

Those who let God lift them up are dead to sin, dead to the Almighty's judgment, and dead to spiritual death. But they are alive to what is good, alive to what is righteous, and alive to what is godly. They live to know and serve the Risen Lord and their Redeemer.

So, if any part of our life in Christ is still stricken with paralysis, and if we are still stricken with the spiritual death of sinfulness, let us hear the Word of God today and let us arise. Let us shake off the slumber of corruption and let the Holy Spirit raise us to the Life of Christ living in us, the life to which we were raised in our baptism.

Сьогодні, у час світової економічно-моральної кризи, у пресі чи у простій людській розмові часто можна зустріти інформацію про те, що багато людей відчувають себе самотніми, опущеними, покинуті на призволяще, позбавлені будь-якої уваги, опіки і підтримки, попадають у різні депресивні стани, недуги.

Розповідь про оздоровлення Ісусом розслабленого чоловіка, котрий хворів 38 років, пригадує нам, що ми ніколи у житті не є самі. Якщо біля нас нема близьких осіб, котрі могли б нас підтримати, то з нами завжди невидимо є присутній Христос. Потрібно тільки пам'ятати про це і твердо вірити у цю правду, навчитися у різних обставинах життя покладати надію на Бога та Його підтримку, і це допоможе нам відновити душевний спокій, віднайти сенс життя, вчинивши Христа центром і основою свого життя, джерелом миру і сили. Пригадаймо собі слова, які Ісус Христос сказав до апостолів перед Своїм вознесінням: "Ось Я з вами по всі дні, до кінця віку" (Мф. 28:20).

Зауважмо, що купіль оздоровлення, звана Вифезда (Дім милосердя), оздоровляла хворих на різні недуги не сама з себе, а лише тоді, коли ангел зворушував воду. Таким чином люди оздоровлялись з різних своїх недуг не самою купіллю у воді, а Божою силою, яка діяла через воду. Вода була лише зовнішнім знаком дії Божої сили, Божої любові і милосердя.

З історії Церкви довідуємося, що Ісус Христос дав людям багато різних зовнішніх знаків і джерел оздоровлення, джерел Божої ласки і любові, Божої присутності у світі. Крім святих таїнств такими знаками є нетлінні мощі і реліквії святих, чудотворні ікони Богородиці, численні відпустові місця. Через них, а зокрема за посередництвом Богородиці і святих, Христос продовжує чудесно оздоровляти людей з різних недуг силою їх віри, виявляти їм Свою любов і милосердя, як розслабленому 2000 років тому в Єрусалимі. Адже Христос не змінився після Свого Вознесіння аж до сьогодні. Він залишився той самий і не змінилася Його Божественна сила. І як тоді Бог давав людям знаки благословення і оздоровлення, так само чинить це і сьогодні, як зазначає апостол Павло у листі до Євреїв: "Ісус Христос учора й сьогодні i навіки Той же" (Євр. 13:8).

Але чи віримо ми в силу цих Божих знаків любові і оздоровлення, чи належно користаємо з них, цих видимих знаків Божої присутності, знаків невидимої Божої ласки, цих духовних джерел Божої любові і милосердя? Чи не шукаємо якихось надзвичайних знаків оздоровлення, Божої допомоги, коли Бог дає нам багато інших знаків допомоги і оздоровлення. Саме через них Христос промовляє до нас і запевнює нас, як колись розслабленому, що ми у житті ніколи не є самі, наодинці зі своїми проблемами і недугами, а з нами завжди є Ісус Христос і Його ласка.

З цього прикладу навчімося і ми все в житті переживати терпеливо і з повною надією на Бога, а Він ніколи не залишить нас без Своєї опіки і допомоги, обов'язково винагородить нас щастям і душевним миром, як у цьому житті, так і в Царстві Небесному. Амінь.

Чудо про юнака, що був викрадений у Сирії

Один раз військо арабів напало на Пафлагонію. Загарбники вивели звідти багато бранців і захопили велику здобич. Серед полонених був один юнак, який служив при храмі святого Юрія у селі Фатри.

Якось усіх полонених привели до арабського воєначальника. Одних він наказав зарубати мечами, інших зробили рабами. А той юнак був найвродливішим із полонених і тому потрапив у рабство до самого воєначальника. Прийшовши додому, господар юнака спробував схилити його до відступництва від християнської віри. Коли ж юнак не погодився, господар не вбив його, але призначив на принизливу роботу: носити воду і рубати дрова при кухні.

Роздумуючи, як після чесного служіння мученику він потрапив у ганебне рабство до невірних, юнак часто зі сльозами благав святого помилувати його у нещасті і подати руку допомоги й заступництва. Незважаючи на обставини, віра у великого Божого слугу зростала в серці юнака.

Якось пізно увечері він повертався знадвору до будинку і почув, як хтось ззовні кличе його на ім'я, і запитав: "Хто ти, пане?" Той назвався знайомим і сказав, що хоче з ним поговорити. Юнак без коливань, хоча й дуже здивувався тому, що хтось, стоячи на вулиці, міг його побачити через стіну, відчинив ворота і побачив вершника – молодого й прекрасного вершника. Юнак привітав його і почав пильно вдивлятися, чи не знайомий він із гостем? А той нахилився, підхопив його, перекинув через шию коня і швидко помчав звідти. Незабаром він зупинився, зняв юнака з коня і на руках заніс до якогось будинку, потім по-дружньому притис його до грудей і зник. Юнак не міг збагнути, що сталося, і від приголомшення так знесилів, що вмить заснув, не знаючи, куди потрапив.

На світанку до кімнати хтось увійшов із світильником. Юнак отямився й підвівся на ноги. Коли той, хто зайшов, побачив чоловіка в арабському одязі, то злякався і, думаючи, що це злодій, почав гукати на допомогу. Юнак, побачивши християнина та ще й клирика, теж зойкнув від подиву. Люди, що збіглися на лемент, почали питати юнака, хто він та звідкіля, і як через зачинені двері увійшов до будинку. Зляканий юнак розповів їм усе, що з ним сталося. Тоді вони пригадали його, адже ще зовсім недавно разом із ним служили при храмі святого. Всі голосно прославляли Бога, що через Свого святого мученика чинить такі великі чудеса. Заспокоївшись, вони сказали: "Ти в храмі святого мученика Юрія, де й потрапив у полон." Юнак отямився і, переконавшись, що його дивовижна пригода – не сон, разом з усіма хвалив Господа. Відтоді він завжди розповідав про це чудо великомученика Юрія.
