Statement of the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora on the Occasion of the 34th Anniversary of Ukraine's Independence

Beloved in Christ,

With profound gratitude to Almighty God, the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America and the Diaspora extends heartfelt greetings to the clergy and faithful in the United States, South America, Australia, Western Europe, and Ukraine on the 34th Anniversary of Ukraine's Independence.

This day is a sacred occasion of remembrance, thanksgiving, and renewed hope. We glorify God for the divine gift of freedom granted to our ancestral homeland, and we give thanks for the perseverance and spiritual courage of the Ukrainian people - past and present - who have carried the torch of faith and nationhood through trials, persecutions, and wars.

The independence of Ukraine is not merely a political milestone; it is the fruit of centuries of suffering and sacrifice. From the baptism of Kyivan Rus' by Saint Volodymyr the Great in 988, the Ukrainian Christian identity has been rooted in the eternal truth of the Gospel. Through centuries of foreign domination and attempts to erase both language and faith, this identity endured - firm, prayerful, and unbroken.

Waves of Ukrainian emigration brought this sacred inheritance to new lands. Our ancestors built churches not as memorials of the past, but as spiritual homes for generations yet to come. From the golden domes of Kyiv to the towns of the American Midwest, from the mountains of South America to the suburbs of Western Europe, the Ukrainian Orthodox faithful have remained united in Christ, upholding the mission of the Church and bearing witness to the truth of the Resurrection.

Today, this witness takes on renewed meaning. As Ukraine suffers under the brutal aggression of the Russian Federation, we are reminded again that freedom must be protected - not only by force of arms, but by the strength of spirit, by moral clarity, and by prayer.

We lift up our voices in intercession for the men and women of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who sacrifice to protect their homeland and the God-given dignity of human life. We pray for the innocent—those wounded, displaced, orphaned, and grieving. And we offer heartfelt gratitude to the many nations, churches, and individuals who have embraced Ukrainian refugees and provided shelter, hope, and solidarity.

In this solemn and sacred time, we issue an earnest invitation to all clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora, and to all people of goodwill: Join us in a global prayer for Ukraine on August 24, 2025.

On the anniversary of independence, the Church in Ukraine will raise prayers across the land. Let us unite our hearts and voices with theirs - from churches and chapels, homes and monasteries, across every continent - pleading with the Lord for:

The healing of wounded bodies and broken hearts

The return of refugees to their homes

The restoration of peace with justice and truth

The renewal of Ukraine in righteousness and divine strength

Let us not merely commemorate, but live our mission - as Orthodox Christians, as Ukrainians, as children of God - called to be peacemakers, bearers of light, and guardians of memory. May our prayers become a stream of grace flowing into every wounded village, every grieving heart, and every soul longing for hope.

Ukraine shall live - by faith, by truth, and by sacrificial love!

З глибокою вдячністю Всемогутньому Богу, Собор Єпископів Української Православної Церкви США та Діаспори щиро вітає духовенство та вірян у Сполучених Штатах, Південній Америці, Австралії, Західній Європі та Україні з 34-ю річницею Незалежності України.

Цей день є священною нагодою для спогаду, подяки та оновленої надії. Ми прославляємо Бога за божественний дар свободи, дарований нашій Батьківщині, і дякуємо за витривалість та духовну мужність українського народу – минулого і сучасного – який ніс вогонь віри і народності через випробування, переслідування і війни.

Незалежність України – це не просто політична віха, це плід століть страждань і жертв. З часу хрещення Київської Русі святим Володимиром Великим у 988 році українська християнська ідентичність була вкорінена у вічній істині Євангелія. Протягом століть іноземного панування та спроб знищити мову і віру ця ідентичність залишалася непохитною, молитовною і незламною.

Хвилі української еміграції принесли цю священну спадщину на нові землі. Наші предки будували церкви не як пам'ятники минулого, а як духовні домівки для майбутніх поколінь. Від золотих куполів Києва до міст американського Середнього Заходу, від гір Південної Америки до передмість Західної Європи, українські православні віряни залишалися єдиними у Христі, підтримуючи місію Церкви і свідчачи про істину Воскресіння.

Сьогодні це свідчення набуває нового значення. У часі страждання України від жорстокої агресії Російської Федерації, ми знову нагадуємо собі, що свободу потрібно захищати не тільки силою зброї, а й силою духу, моральною ясністю та молитвою.

Ми підносимо свої голоси в молитві за чоловіків і жінок Збройних сил України, які жертвують собою, щоб захистити свою Батьківщину і дану Богом гідність людського життя. Ми молимося за невинних - поранених, переселенців, сиріт та всіх, хто страждає. Ми висловлюємо щиру вдячність багатьом країнам, церквам і окремим особам, які прийняли українських біженців і надали їм притулок, надію і солідарність.

У цей урочистий і священний час ми щиро закликаємо всіх священників і вірних Української Православної Церкви США та Діаспори, а також усіх людей доброї волі: приєднюйтесь до нас у загальній молитві за Україну 24 серпня 2025 року.

У річницю незалежності Церква в Україні піднесе молитви по всій країні. Давайте об'єднаємо наші серця і голоси з їхніми - з церков і каплиць, будинків і монастирів, з усіх континентів - благаючи Господа про:

Зцілення поранених тіл і розбитих сердець

Повернення біженців до своїх домівок

Відновлення миру з справед­ливістю і правдою

Оновлення України в праведності і божественній силі

Давайте не просто вшановувати пам'ять, а жити нашою місією – як православні християни, як українці, як діти Божі, покликані бути миротворцями, носіями світла і хранителями пам'яті. Нехай наші молитви стануть потоком благодаті, що тече в кожне поранене село, кожне скорботне серце і кожну душу, яка прагне надії.

Martyrs Basil and Theodore of the Kyiv Caves

The Hieromartyrs Basil and Theodore of the Caves pursued asceticism in the eleventh century in the Near Caves of Kyiv. Saint Theodore distributed his riches to the poor, went to the monastery and settled into the Varangian Cave, adjoining the Caves of Saint Theodosius. He dwelt here many years in strict temperance.

When the enemy aroused sorrow in him for giving away his possessions, Saint Basil comforted him: "I implore you, brother Theodore, do not forget the reward. If you want to have possessions, take everything that is mine." Saint Theodore repented and dearly loved Saint Basil, with whom he lived in the cell.

Once, Saint Basil was on an errand outside the monastery for three months. The devil, having assumed his form, appeared to Saint Theodore and indicated that there was a treasure hidden somewhere in the cave by robbers. The monk still wanted to leave the monastery to buy possessions to live in the world. When Saint Basil returned, the demonic illusion disappeared. From that time, Saint Theodore started to be more attentive to himself. In order not to be distracted by idle thoughts during moments of inactivity, he set up a millstone, and by night he ground grain. Thus, by long and zealous ascetic action he freed himself from the passion of avarice.

A report reached Prince Mstyslav Svyatopolkovich that Saint Theodore had found much treasure in the cave. He summoned the monk to him and commanded him to show him the spot where the valuables were hidden. Saint Theodore told the prince that indeed he had once seen gold and precious vessels in the cave, but fearing temptation, he and Saint Basil had buried the treasure, and God took from him the memory of where it was hidden.

Not believing the saint, the prince gave orders to torture him to death. They beat Saint Theodore so much, that his hair-shirt was wet with blood, and then they hung him head-downwards, lighting a fire beneath him. In a drunken condition the prince commanded them to torture Saint Basil also, and then to kill him with an arrow. Dying, the martyr Basil threw the arrow at the feet of Prince Mstyslav and predicted that he himself would soon be mortally wounded by it. The prophecy was fulfilled on July 15, 1099 during an internecine war with David Igorovych. On the wall of the Volodymyr fortress, Prince Mstyslav was suddenly struck in the chest by an arrow through an opening in the timbers, and on the following night he died. Recognizing his own arrow, the prince said: "I die because of the monastic martyrs Basil and Theodore."

Життя преподобного Феодора мученика нерозривно пов'язане з його сучасником преподобним Василієм, з яким вони разом і постраждали від нечестивого князя й понині своїми святими мощами спочивають в одній раці в Ближніх печерах Святої Успенської Києво-Печерської Лаври.

Цьому блаженному Феодору одного разу ворог приніс чималу печаль і тугу через маєток, розданий убогим, приводячи йому на думку довгі роки життя, знемогу плоті й бідність монастирської їжі. Був у тому самому монастирі чорноризець на ім'я Василій, довершений інок. Він бажав втішити і відвернути від відчаю Феодора. Той, почувши собрата, став оплакувати свій гріх. І відтоді між цими двома ченцями утворилася приязнь.

Одного разу Василій був відісланий ігуменом на послух, де пробув три місяці. Ворог, вирішивши, що цей час зручний для його підступів, прийняв вигляд Василія і дійшов до печерного брата, вдаючи, що бесідує з ним про корисні речі. «Феодоре, — сказав він йому, — як тепер досягаєш успіхів ти? Чи припинилася в тобі бісівська брань? Або він тобі ще творить капость, збуджуючи любов до стяжательства і пробуджуючи спогад про розданий вбогим маєток?»

Коли повернувся Василій, Феодор зрозумів що сталося. Тоді Василь промовив заборонну молитву, закликавши на допомогу святих, і, мудро наставивши Феодора, відійшов до монастиря, у свою келію. І після цього біс не посмів більше з'явитися Феодору.

Дойшла чутка і до Мстислава Святополковича. Князь хотів було випитати у святого, де заховано золото, і віддати частину йому. Але святий був непохитний у своєму подвигу. Блаженний Феодор сказав: «Я не хочу брати нічого такого, що мені не на користь; все б я віддав вам, так як ви служите тому, від чого я вільний; але Господь відняв у мене пам'ять про те місце, де я сховав скарб». Тоді князь в гніві сказав слугам: «Наказую скувати цього монаха по руках і по ногах та три дні не давати йому хліба й води за те, що він не побажав моєї милості». Покликаний був до князя і святий Василій, котрого той наказав мучити без милості, як Феодора. І, не перенісши викриття й будучи нетверезим від вина, князь, взявши стрілу, поранив нею блаженного Василія. Він же, вийнявши стрілу із тіла, кинув її князеві, кажучи: «Цією стрілою через недовгий час ти сам будеш поранений», — що і збулося за передреченням преподобного. Але перед тим князь наказав святих, ледве живих від мук, ув'язнити окремо в темницю, щоб наступного дня піддати їх ще важчим мукам.

І в ту ніч обидва преподобних заснули чесною перед Господом смертю, і вивів Господь із темниці душі їхні.

Дізнавшись про це, зібралася братія і взяла тіла святих мучеників. Їх поховали з честю в печері Варязькій, де вони працелюбно подвизалися.

Потім вони були перенесені до печер преподобного Антонія, де й донині лежать нетлінно, в закривавленому одязі і власяницях, які теж залишаються нетлінними.

Незабаром після блаженної їхньої смерті збулося пророцтво преподобного Василія: князь Мстислав Святополкович застрелений був у Володимирі на стіні, борючись з князем Володимиром Ігоровичем. І тоді, впізнавши стрілу свою, якою поранив блаженного Василія, він сказав: «Ось, я помираю тепер за преподобних Феодора і Василія».

Sisterhood Semi-Annual Meeting

St. Mary's Sisterhood will hold their Semi-Annual meeting on Thursday, August 28, 2025 at 5:30 PM in the Memorial Center. A simple supper will be provided following.

St. John's Church School

For 2025-26 we require Church School Registration to be able to order the right amount of material and make sure we have enough desks. We also expect regular attendance from each student so that we can move along with the planned curriculum. Please contact appropriate teacher to let her know that your child(ren) will miss a class and to ask for material to work at home.

First day of church school is September 14, 2025. After the Divine Liturgy we will have a small blessing and presentation of UOL Essay contest results.
