Браття, я думаю, що нам, посланникам останнім, Бог судив бути ніби засудженими на смерть, бо ми стали позорищем світові, Ангелам і людям. Ми безумні Христа ради, а ви мудрі у Христі; ми немічні, а ви міцні; ви у славі, а ми в безчесті. Навіть донині терпимо голод і спрагу, і наготу і побої, і поневіряємось, і трудимось, працюючи своїми руками. Браття, нарешті, зміцнюйтесь Господом і могутністю сили Його. Одягніться в повну зброю Божу, щоб вам можна було стати проти хитрощів диявольських, бо наша боротьба не проти крові і плоті, а проти начальств, проти властей, проти світоправителів темряви віку цього, проти духів злоби піднебесних. Для цього прийміть повну зброю Божу, щоб ви змогли протистояти в день злий і, все подолавши, вистояти. Отож станьте, підперезавши чресла ваші істиною і одягнувшись у броню праведності, і взувши ноги в готовність благовіствувати мир; а понад усе візьміть щит віри, яким зможете погасити всі розпечені стріли лукавого; і шолом спасіння візьміть, і меч духовний, що є слово Боже.

Коли вони прийшли до народу, то підійшов до Нього чоловік і, ставши перед Ним на коліна, сказав: Господи! помилуй сина мого; він у час нового місяця біснується і тяжко страждає, бо часто кидається у вогонь і часто у воду; я приводив його до учнів Твоїх, та вони не змогли зцілити його. Ісус же, відповідаючи, сказав: о, роде невірний і розбещений! доки буду з вами? доки терпітиму вас? приведіть його до Мене сюди. І заборонив йому Ісус, і біс вийшов з нього; і отрок видужав у ту ж мить. Тоді учні, підійшовши до Ісуса на самоті, сказали: чому ми не змогли вигнати його? Але перед усім тим накладуть на вас руки свої, і переслідувати будуть, і видаватимуть вас у синагоги й в'язниці, і поведуть вас до царів та правителів через Ім'я Моє. Але це стане вам на свідоцтво. Отож, покладіть у серця свої наперед не гадати, що будете відповідати, бо дам Я вам мову та мудрість, що не зможуть противитись чи суперечити їй всі противники ваші. І будуть вас видавати і батьки, і брати, і рідня, і друзі, а декому з вас заподіють і смерть. І за Ім'я Моє будуть усі вас ненавидіти. Але й волосина вам із голови не загине! Терпеливістю вашою душі свої ви здобудете.

Statement from the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA on the Annual Observance of Labor Day Weekend

Beloved Clergy and Faithful of our Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA,

As we approach the annual observance of Labor Day weekend, we, the Council of Bishops, extend our heartfelt blessings and greetings to each of you. This national holiday, dedicated to honoring the dignity of labor and the achievements of workers, offers us a valuable opportunity to reflect upon the Christian virtues of hard work, stewardship, and service.

The Holy Scriptures remind us that work is not merely a means to an end but a divine vocation given to humanity by God Himself. In the Book of Genesis, we see that Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden "to till it and keep it" (Genesis 2:15). Our Lord Jesus Christ, during His earthly ministry, worked as a carpenter and served others, providing us with the ultimate example of humble service. St. Paul also reminds us, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters" (Colossians 3:23).

On this Labor Day, we are called to celebrate the fruits of our labor and recognize the contributions of workers in every field and vocation. Whether in the home, the workplace, or the community, every honest task can become a means of glorifying God. Let us offer prayers of gratitude for the workers in our lives who contribute to the well-being of our families, communities, and nation. We also remember those who suffer from injustice, unemployment, or unsafe working conditions, praying for their protection, dignity, and rights.

As we gather with family and friends this weekend, let us not forget the importance of rest and reflection. Just as God rested on the seventh day, setting an example for us, so too should we find time for rest and renewal in His presence. Labor Day weekend can be a time to reconnect with loved ones, attend Divine Liturgy, and offer prayers of thanksgiving to our Lord, who blesses the work of our hands and hearts.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. May He bless and protect all workers and grant us the wisdom to use our gifts for His glory and the betterment of our neighbors.

Улюблене духовенство та вірні нашої Української Православної Церкви США,

Наближаючись до щорічного святкування Дня Праці, ми, Архієрейський Собор, щиро вітаємо кожного з вас. Це національне свято, присвячене вшануванню гідності праці та досягнень тих, хто трудяться, дає нам важливу нагоду замислитися над християнськими чеснотами працьовитості, господарювання та служіння.

Святе Письмо нагадує нам, що праця — це не просто засіб досягнення мети, а божественне покликання, дане людству Самим Богом. У Книзі Буття ми бачимо, що Адам був оселений в Едемському саду, «щоб порала та доглядала його» Буття 2:15. Наш Господь Ісус Христос під час Свого земного служіння працював теслею і служив іншим, подаючи нам найкращий приклад смиренного служіння. Св. Павло також нагадує нам: «І все, що тільки чините, робіть від душі, немов Господеві, а не людям» Колосян 3:23.

У цей День Праці ми покликані відзначити плоди нашої праці та визнати внесок працівників у кожній сфері та покликанні. Чи то вдома, на роботі чи в суспільстві, кожна сумлінна праця може стати засобом прославлення Бога. Піднесімо молитви вдячності за усіх працівників, котрі роблять внесок у добробут наших сімей, громад та нації. Ми також згадуємо тих, хто страждає від несправедливості, безробіття чи небезпечних умов праці, молячись за їхній захист, гідність і права.

Збираючись із сім'єю та друзями цими вихідними, не забуваймо про важливість відпочинку та міркування. Подібно до того, як Бог спочив сьомого дня, подаючи нам приклад, так і ми повинні знаходити час для відпочинку та оновлення в Його присутності. Вихідні у День Праці можуть послужити часом для відновлення зв'язків з близькими, відвідування Божественної Літургії та піднесення подячних молитов нашому Господу, який благословляє працю наших рук і сердець.

Благодать Господа нашого Ісуса Христа, любов Бога Отця і причастя Святого Духа нехай буде з усіма вами. Нехай Він благословить і захистить усіх працівників і дасть нам мудрість використовувати наші дари для Його слави та для добробуту наших ближніх.

Martyr Andrew Stratelates, and 2,593 soldiers with him, in Cilicia

The Martyr Andrew Stratelates was a military commander in the Roman army during the reign of the emperor Maximian (284-305). They loved him in the Roman army because of his bravery, invincibility and sense of fairness. When a large Persian army invaded the Syrian territories, the governor Antiochus entrusted Saint Andrew with the command of the Roman army, giving him the title of "Stratelates" ("Commander"). Saint Andrew selected a small detachment of brave soldiers and proceeded against the adversary.

His soldiers were pagans, and Saint Andrew himself had still not accepted Baptism, but he believed in Jesus Christ. Before the conflict he persuaded the soldiers that the pagan gods were demons and could not help them in battle. He proclaimed to them Jesus Christ, the omnipotent God of Heaven and earth, giving help to all who believe in Him.

The soldiers went into battle, calling on the help of the Savior. The small detachment routed the numerous host of the Persians. Saint Andrew returned from the campaign in glory, having gained a total victory. But jealous men denounced him to the governor Antiochus, saying that he was a Christian who had converted the soldiers under his command to his faith.

Saint Andrew was summoned to trial, and there he declared his faith in Christ. For this they subjected him to torture. He laid himself upon a bed of white-hot copper, but as soon as he sought help from the Lord, the bed became cool. They crucified his soldiers on trees, but not one of them renounced Christ. Locking the saints away in prison, Antiochus sent the report of charges on to the emperor, unable to decide whether to impose the death sentence upon the acclaimed champion. The emperor knew how the army loved Saint Andrew, and fearing a rebellion, he gave orders to free the martyrs. Secretly, however, he ordered that each be executed on some pretext.

After being freed, Saint Andrew went to the city of Tarsus with his fellow soldiers. There the local bishop Peter and Bishop Nonos of Beroea baptized them. Then the soldiers proceeded on to the vicinity of Taxanata. Antiochus wrote a letter to Seleucus, governor of the Cilicia region, ordering him to overtake the company of Saint Andrew and kill them, under the pretext that they had deserted their military standards.

Seleucus came upon the martyrs in the passes of Mount Tauros, where they were evidently soon to suffer. Saint Andrew, calling the soldiers his brothers and children, urged them not to fear death. He prayed for all who would honor their memory, and asked the Lord to create a curative spring on the place where their blood would be shed.

At the time of this prayer the steadfast martyrs were beheaded with swords. During this time, a spring of water issued forth from the ground. Bishops Peter and Nonos, with their clergy, secretly followed the company of Saint Andrew, and buried their bodies. One of the clergy, suffering for a long time from an evil spirit, drank from the spring of water, and at once he was healed. Reports of this spread among the local people and they began to come to the spring. Through the prayers of Saint Andrew and the 2593 Martyrs suffering with him, they received gracious help from God.

Мученик Андрій Стратилат був римським воєначальником за імператора Максиміана. Під час війни з Сирією святому Андрію було дано титул "стратилат", тобто головнокомандувач. Вибравши невеликий загін, святий Андрій виступив проти противника. Його воїни були язичниками, і сам він ще не прийняв Хрещення, але увірував у Христа. Перед битвою святий Андрій переконував воїнів, що язичницькі боги є біси, і проповідував їм істинного Бога. З вірою в допомогу Божу невеликий загін воїнів переміг численне військо персів.

Коли святий Андрій повернувся із походу з перемогою, то багато хто став заздрити його славі. Правителю Антіоху донести, що святий є християнином і навернув до Христа підлеглих воїнів. Викликаний на суд, мученик сповідав Христа, за що був підданий тортурам. Воїнів, які були з ним, розіп'яли на деревах, але жоден із них не зрікся Христа.

Тоді імператор, боячись збурення війська, відпустив святого Андрія і його військову дружину, але таємно наказав під будь-яким приводом стратити порізно кожного. Отримавши звільнення, святий разом зі своїми воїнами прийшов до міста Тарс. Там вони прийняли Хрещення, а потім були вбиті в ущелині Тавра.

Перед смертю святий Андрій молився за всіх, хто вшановуватиме їхню пам'ять, і просив Господа послати людям цілюще джерело на місці, де проллється їхня кров. Під час цієї молитви мученики були усічені мечем. І тієї ж миті із землі витекло джерело.

Єпископи Петро і Нон, які хрестили воїнів, разом з кліриком поховали тіла мучеників. Один із кліриків, який віддавна страждав від злого духа, напився із джерела й одразу одержав зцілення. Чутка про це рознеслася серед навколишніх жителів, і вони стали приходити до джерела й по молитвам святого Андрія і 2593-х мучеників отримували благодатну допомогу від Бога.

Мученицька кончина святих настала близько 302 року.
