The Glorious and All-Praised Chief Apostles
Peter and Paul

Without Divine Providence, nothing happens—not in the universe, not in history, not in society, not in the life of any individual person. All of nature praises its almighty and merciful Creator. The imprint of His invisible footstep, like a seal of love, remains on stone, on wood, on every little flower, and in the heart of every person. This love of God led from the harsh law of the Old Testament into the living Christian faith of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, who through their lives proved their sacrificial love for God and for people.

The holy Apostle Peter was a fisherman in Bethsaida, a small town on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. One day, walking along the lakeshore, Christ saw Peter, who was casting nets together with his brother Andrew. "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matt. 4:19)—these words, addressed to simple fishermen, determined their future destiny. They followed Christ and became His disciples.

The Apostle Peter, on Mount Tabor, witnessed the Divine glory of the Lord during the Transfiguration of Christ. When the time of the Savior's Passion drew near, on the way to Jerusalem, He asked His disciples: "But who do you say that I am?" The Apostle Peter was the first to answer: "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God"—for which he was granted high praise: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

In the Garden of Gethsemane, when Judas came with soldiers to arrest the Savior, only one disciple stood up for Him—that was the Apostle Peter. Drawing his sword, he cut off the ear of one of the high priest's servants, but Christ, even in His hour before death, healed the servant. Peter followed Christ to the high priest's house, entered the courtyard with Him, and stood there warming himself by the fire. But three times, answering the questions of those around him, he denied his Teacher, and after the third denial he suddenly met Jesus's gaze and heard the crowing of a rooster. "And Peter remembered the word Jesus had said to him: Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times! And he went out and wept bitterly" (Matt. 26:75).

But there is no sin that the Merciful Lord cannot forgive. Peter's repentance was so sincere and deep that it was to him, the first among the disciples, that Christ appeared after His Resurrection, restoring him to his apostolic dignity (John 21:15–17).

After the Ascension of the Lord and after Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, the Apostle Peter, together with the Savior's other disciples, began to preach His teaching. Astonishing signs accompanied Peter's confession of the Christian faith. The dead were raised (Acts 9:40), the lame and paralyzed were healed (Acts 3:1–8, 9:32–34), and those exposed in their crimes died (Acts 5:5–10).

Two Catholic (Universal) Epistles of the holy Apostle Peter are known. In the second epistle (around the year 67), he writes of his approaching death. By order of the Roman emperor Nero, the Apostle Peter was condemned to crucifixion for preaching Christianity. Considering himself unworthy to accept the same kind of martyric death as his Teacher, he asked to be crucified head downward, wishing even in death to bow his head before God.

The holy Apostle Paul came from the city of Tarsus and, before his apostolic ministry, bore the name Saul. "Thoroughly trained in the law of his fathers, zealous for God," as he himself testifies, he "persecuted the followers of this teaching (the Christians) even unto death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women" (Acts 22:3–4). He approved of the killing of the archdeacon Stephen and even guarded the clothing of those who stoned him (Acts 8:3). In the year 34, Saul was sent to Damascus, commissioned by the high priests, to hand over to torment the Christians hiding there. And on the way there, something happened to him that changed his entire life.

As Saul approached Damascus, a Divine Light shone around him. All the soldiers accompanying him fell to their knees, and he heard a voice saying: "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?" Saul asked: "Who are You, Lord?" The voice answered: "I am Jesus, whom you persecute. But rise and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness of what you have seen and of what I will reveal to you" (Acts 26:13–16). Saul's companions heard the voice but could not make out the words.

Saul was blinded by the Divine light and, by the Lord's command, made his way to Damascus, where the apostle Ananias lived. It had been revealed to Ananias in a vision that he should go to "the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man of Tarsus named Saul" (Acts 9:11). Ananias was to lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight. When this command was fulfilled, Saul's sight was restored, he received Holy Baptism, and was given the name Paul.

From then on, the holy Apostle Paul, setting out on distant journeys and sending out epistles, preached the Christian faith among Jews and pagans, among slaves and free people. In Palestine and Asia Minor, in Greece and Italy, and on the islands of the Mediterranean, the fervent preaching of the holy apostle resounded.

Paul was among the participants of the first Council of the Apostles in Jerusalem. Ceaselessly preaching the Gospel, the apostle endured many sorrows and sufferings; three times the ship on which he was sailing sank; he was beaten with rods and stoned. While preaching in Macedonia, the Apostle Paul was seized and thrown into prison. But even in chains he continued to pray and glorify God. Then suddenly, at midnight, the foundation of the prison building shook, the doors opened, and the chains fell away (Acts 16:22–26).

While in Athens, the holy apostle preached the Gospel of Christ at the Areopagus—the supreme assembly of Ancient Greece. Through his preaching he brought new followers to the true God, among them the later renowned Christian theologian Dionysius the Areopagite.

Returning to Jerusalem from his third missionary journey, the Apostle Paul was seized by the Jews and, as a Roman citizen, was sent to be judged before Caesar.

In Rome, the Apostle Paul helped the Apostle Peter enlighten the Romans with the light of the Christian faith, for which he was condemned to death. The holy Apostle Paul was beheaded by the sword.

The apostles of Christ, Peter and Paul, departed to the Lord on the same day. The burial place of the apostles was sacred to the first Christians of Rome. The veneration of their memory began immediately after their execution, while among us this feast began to be celebrated after the Baptism of Kyivan Rus'.

Без Провидіння Божого нічого не буває ні у Всесвіті, ні в історії, ні в суспільстві, ні в житті окремих людей. Вся природа хвалить свого всемогутнього і милосердного Творця. Відбиток Його невидимої стопи, як печать любові, залишається на камені, на дереві, на кожній квіточці і в серці кожної людини. Ця Божа любов із старозавітного жорстокого закону привела в живу християнську віру святих апостолів Петра і Павла, які своїм життям довели свою жертовну любов до Бога і людей.

Святий апостол Петро був рибалкою у Вифсаїді, маленькому містечку на березі Галілейського озера. Одного разу, проходячи берегом озера, Христос побачив Петра, який зі своїм братом Андрієм закидав сіті. «Ідіть за Мною, і Я зроблю вас ловцями людей» (Мф. 4:19), — ці слова, звернені до простих рибалок, визначили їхню подальшу долю. Вони послідували за Христом і стали Його учнями.

Апостол Петро на горі Фавор був свідком Божественної слави Господньої, під час Преображення Христового. Коли ж наблизився час Хресних страждань Спасителя, на шляху до Єрусалима, Він запитав Своїх учнів: «А ви за кого Мене вважаєте?» Апостол Петро першим відповів: «Ти — Христос, Син Бога Живого», — за що удостоївся високої похвали: «Ти Петро, і на цьому камені Я збудую Церкву Мою, і ворота пекла не здолають її».

В Гефсиманському саду, коли Іуда прийшов з воїнами, щоб арештувати Спасителя, лише один учень заступився за Нього — то був апостол Петро. Вихопивши меч, він відсік вухо одному зі служників первосвященника, але Христос в передсмертну свою годину зцілив раба. Петро слідував за Христом до будинку первосвященника, увійшов з Ним у двір і стояв там, гріючись біля вогнища. Але тричі, відповідаючи на запитання оточення, він відрікався від свого Учителя, а після третього відречення раптом зустрівся з поглядом Іісуса і почув спів півня. «І згадав Петро слово, сказане йому Іісусом: перш ніж проспіває півень, тричі відречешся від Мене! І, вийшовши геть, плакав гірко». (Мф. 26:75).

Але немає такого гріха, якого не може простити Милосердний Господь. Покаяння Петра було таким щирим і глибоким, що саме йому, першому із учнів явився Христос після Свого Воскресіння і відновив його в апостольському достоїнстві (Ін. 21:15-17).

Після Вознесіння Господнього та після П'ятидесятниці, коли Дух Святий зійшов на апостолів, апостол Петро разом з іншими учнями Спасителя став проповідувати Його вчення. Дивовижні знамення супроводжували сповідування Петром Христової віри. Мертві воскресали (Діян. 9:40), каліки і розслаблені зцілювалися (Діян. 3:1-8,9:32-34), викриті в злочинах помирали (Діян. 5:5-10).

Відомі два Соборні послання святого апостола Петра. В другому посланні (близько 67 року) він пише про свою близьку смерть. За наказом римського імператора Нерона апостола Петра за проповідь християнства засудили на розп'яття. Вважаючи себе негідним прийняти таку саму мученицьку смерть, як і його Учитель, він просив, щоб його розіп'яли головою вниз, бажаючи навіть під час смерті схилити свою голову перед Богом.

Святий апостол Павло був вихідцем із міста Тарса і до свого апостольського служіння мав ім'я Савл. «Ретельно навчений в батьківському законі, ревнитель по Бозі», як свідчить він сам про себе, «навіть до смерті гонив послідовників цього вчення (християн), зв`язуючи і віддаючи до темниці і чоловіків і жінок»(Діян. 22:3-4). Він схвалював вбивство архідиякона Стефана і навіть стеріг одяг тих, хто побивав його камінням (Діян. 8:3). 34 року Савл був направлений до Дамаска за дорученням первосвященників віддати на муки християн, які там переховувалися. І дорогою туди з ним сталася подія, яка змінила все його життя.

Коли Савл наблизився до Дамаска, його осяяло Божественне Світло. Всі воїни, які супроводжували його, впали на коліна, і він почув голос, що говорив: «Савле! Савле! що ти гониш Мене?» Савл запитав: «Хто Ти, Господи?» Голос відповів: «Я Іісус, Котрого ти гониш. Але встань і стань на ноги твої; бо для того Я і з'явився тобі, щоб поставити тебе служителем і свідком того, що ти бачив і що Я відкрию тобі» (Діян. 26:13-16). Супутники Савла чули голос, але не могли розібрати слів.

Савл осліп від Божого світла і з веління Господнього попрямував до Дамаска, де жив апостол Ананія, якому у видінні було відкрито, щоб він пішов на «вулицю, так звану Пряму, запитав в Іудиному будинку тарсянина, на ім'я Савл» (Діян. 9:11). Ананія повинен був покласти на нього руки, щоб той прозрів. Коли це веління було виконано, Савл прозрів, прийняв Святе Хрещення і був названий Павлом.

Відтоді святий апостол Павло, вирушаючи у далекі подорожі та розсилаючи послання, проповідував віру Христову серед іудеїв і язичників, серед рабів і вільних. В Палестині і Малій Азії, Греції та Італії, на Середземноморських островах лунала палка проповідь святого апостола.

Павло був серед учасників першого Собору апостолів у Єрусалимі. Безперестанку проповідуючи Євангеліє, апостол переносив багато скорбот і страждань; тричі тонув корабель, на якому він плив; його били палками і побивали камінням. Проповідуючи в Македонії, апостол Павло був схоплений і відведений до темниці. Але і в кайданах він продовжував молитися й славити Бога. Та раптом опівночі фундамент темничної споруди затремтів, відчинилися двері і кайдани розсипалися (Діян. 16:22-26).

Перебуваючи в Афінах, святий апостол благовіствував про Христа в ареопазі — верховному зібранні Древньої Греції. Своєю проповіддю він привів до істинного Бога нових послідовників, серед них і відомого пізніше християнського богослова Діонісія Ареопагіта.

Повернувшись зі своєї третьої місіонерської подорожі до Єрусалима, апостол Павло був схоплений іудеями і, як римський громадянин, відправлений на суд до кесаря.

У Римі апостол Павло допомагав апостолу Петру просвіщати римлян світлом Христової віри, за що і був засуджений на смерть. Святому апостолу Павлу відсікли мечем голову.

Апостоли Христові Петро і Павло відійшли до Господа в один день. Місце поховання апостолів було священним для перших християн Рима. Вшанування їхньої пам`яті почалося відразу ж після страти, а у нас відзначати це свято стали після Хрещення Київської Русі.

Please stay after the Divine Liturgy for the meeting followed by Patron Saint celebration with lunch provided.

У неділю, 12 липня, відбудуться спеціальні зібрання парафіяльної громади для затверження кошторису за укладання плитки у вівтарній частині, на сходах, навколо тетраподу, та центральний коридор.

Просимо залишитися після Божественної Літургії для участі у зібранні та святкування парафіяльного празнику із обідом.

How to reserve:

Parishioners may reserve throughout the month of July, either online or in person with Lisa Ferrante or Mary Ann Klish.

Please honor your reservation, and promptly cancel if your plans change so someone else may attend.

Family members of parishioners who are not themselves current parish members are asked to pay $50 per adult and $25 per child.

Non-parishioners: Registration opens August 1, 2026, on a first come, first served basis, at $50 per adult and $25 per child.
