Браття, хто сіє скупо, той скупо і пожне, а хто сіє щедро, той щедро і пожне. Кожен вділяй з ласки серця, не з гіркотою серця і не з примусом, бо хто дає доброзичливо, того любить Бог. Бог же має силу збагатити вас усякою благодаттю, щоб ви, завжди і у всьому маючи всякий достаток, були багаті на всяке добре діло. Як написано: розтратив, роздав убогим; правда його перебуває повік. Той же, Хто дає насіння сіячеві і хліб в їжу, подасть щедрість посіяному вами і примножить плоди правди вашої, так щоб ви були багаті всім на всяку щедрість, яка через нас викликає подяку Богові.

Від Луки 5:1-11

Одного разу, коли народ тиснувся до Нього, щоб слухати слово Боже, а Він стояв біля озера Геннісаретського, і побачив Він два човни, що стояли на озері; а рибалки, вийшовши з них, промивали сіті. Увійшовши в один з човнів, який належав Симонові, Він просив його відпливти трохи від берега і, сівши, повчав народ з човна. Коли ж перестав учити, сказав Симонові: відпливи на глибину і закиньте сіті свої для лову. Симон сказав Йому у відповідь: Наставнику! ми трудилися всю ніч і нічого не піймали, але по слову Твоєму закину сіть. Зробивши це, вони піймали дуже багато риби, аж проривалася сіть у них. І дали знак товаришам з іншого човна, щоб прийшли допомогти їм; і прийшли, і наповнили обидва човни так, що вони почали тонути. Побачивши це, Симон Петро припав до колін Ісуса і сказав: Господи! вийди від мене, бо я чоловік грішний. Бо жах охопив його і всіх, що були з ним, від того улову риби, який зловили; також і Якова та Іоанна, синів Зеведеєвих, які були товаришами Симона. І сказав Ісус Симонові: не бійся; віднині будеш ловцем людей. І витягнувши обидва човни на берег, залишили все і пішли за Ним.

Venerable Euphrosyne of Alexandria

Our venerable Mother Euphrosyne was born at the beginning of the fifth century in the city of Alexandria. She was the only child of illustrious and wealthy parents. When she was twelve years old, her mother reposed, and so the girl was raised by her Father, Paphnutios, who was a very devout Christian. He was in the habit of visiting a certain monastery, where the Igoumen was his Spiritual Father.

When Euphrosyne turned eighteen, her father wanted her to marry. He went to the monastery to obtain the Igoumen's blessing for his daughter's wedding. The Igoumen talked with her and gave her his blessing, but Saint Euphrosyne longed for the monastic life. One day, she gave away her possessions to the poor, and then she snuck out of the house.

The Saint had decided to enter a monastery in order to spend her life in solitude and prayer, but she was afraid that her father was apt to find find her in a women's monastery. Therefore, she disguised herself as a man and entered the same men's monastery which she had visited with her father from her childhood, calling herself Smaragdos. The monks did not recognize Euphrosyne dressed in men's clothes, and so they received her into the monastery. The monks were impressed by her spiritual struggles and by her willingness to serve everyone.

There in a solitary cell, Saint Euphrosyne spent 38 years in spiritual endeavors, fasting and prayer, thereby attaining a high level of spiritual accomplishment.

Paphnutios was deeply saddened by the loss of his beloved daughter; more than once, on the advice of his Spiritual Father, he spoke to the "monk" Smaragdos, disclosing his grief and receiving spiritual comfort. Before her death, Saint Euphrosyne revealed her secret to her grieving parent and insisted that no one but he should prepare her body for burial. After he buried his daughter, Paphnutios distributed all his wealth to the poor and to the monastery, and then he was tonsured. For ten years, until the time of his own repose, he labored in his daughter's cell.

By her life, Saint Euphrosyne reminds us that we must renounce "worldly passions and live soberly, uprightly, and devoutly" (Titus 2:12). That is, after rejecting the desires of this vain and sinful world, we ought to live abstemiously, with justice toward our fellow human beings, and with piety toward God.

Saint Paphnutios and his daughter Saint Euphrosyne are both commemorated today, and once again on February 15.

Єфросинія Олександрійська

8 жовтня – день пам'яті преподобної Єфросинії Олександрійської. Візантійський письменник Симеон Метафраст в Х столітті написав книгу про життя святої Єфросинії.

Дівчинка народилась в заможній та поважній родині в Олександрії Єгипетській. В 12 років у Єфросинії померла мати, тому батько – благочестивий християнин, самостійно займався вихованням єдиної доньки. Коли Єфросинії виповнилося 18 років, батько хотів віддати її заміж. Він взяв доньку і відправився в монастир, щоб отримати благословення на майбутній шлюб дочки. Ігумен довго розмовляв з дівчиною і дав їй своє благословення, але свята Єфросинія прагнула до чернечого життя.

Прийнявши таємно постриг вона покинула батьківський дім і вирішила жити в монастирі, щоб провести життя в усамітненні та молитві. Єфросинія знала, що в жіночому монастирі її знайде батько, тому вона назвала себе Ізмарагдом та прийшла в той самий чоловічий монастир, який з дитинства відвідувала разом з батьком.

Ченці не впізнали переодягнену Євфросинію і взяли у свою обитель. У відокремленій келії в праці, пості й молитві свята Єфросинія провела 38 років і досягла високої духовної досконалості.

Перед кончиною преподобна Єфросинія відкрила батькові свою таємницю і просила, щоб ніхто, крім нього, не готував до поховання її тіло. Поховавши дочку, Пафнутій віддав усе своє майно бідним і монастирю і прийняв чернецтво. До самої своєї смерті він працював у келії своєї дочки.
