Myrrh-Bearing Women

Propers for August 4, 2024

Aug. 4 – 6th Sunday after Pentecost. Tone 5

Holy Myrrh-bearer and Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalen (1st c.). Translation of the relics (404) of Hieromartyr Phocas (403). St. Cornelius, monk, of Pereyaslav (1693).

Rom. 12:6-14; Mt. 9:1-8;
1 Cor. 9:2-12 ; Lk. 8:1-3;

Tropar Resurrectional, Tone 5

Let us, the faithful, praise and worship the Word, Co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born for our salvation of the Virgin. In His Good Will He was lifted up on the Cross in the flesh to suffer death and to raise the dead by His glorious Resurrection.

Tropar of our church, Tone 4

Prophet and Forerunner of the coming of Christ,/ we who honor you with love can find no manner of praising you worthily./ For the barrenness of one who bore you / and the silence of your father have been ended by your being born of divine grace / and you have proclaimed to the world / the Incarnation of the Son of God.

Tropar to Mary Magdalen, Tone 1

O honorable Mary Magdalene, thou didst follow after Christ, Who for our sake was born of the Virgin, keeping His precepts and laws. Wherefore, celebrating thy most holy memory today, through thy supplications we receive remission of sins.

Tropar to Hieromartyr, Tone 4

As thou didst share in the ways of the apostles and didst occupy their throne, thou didst find thine activity to be a passage to divine vision, O divinely inspired one. Wherefore, ordering the word of truth, thou didst suffer for the Faith even to the shedding of thy blood. O hieromartyr Phocas, entreat Christ God, that our souls be saved.

Kondak Resurrectional, Tone 5

You descended into Hades, my Savior, destroying its gates as the Almighty, resurrecting the dead as Creator and destroying the sting of Death. You have delivered Adam from the curse, Lover of all Mankind. Therefore, we all cry out to You: Lord, save us.

Kondak of our church, Tone 3

She who was previously barren / now bears the Forerunner of Christ / who is the fulfillment of every prophecy. / For the prophets proclaimed beforehand / that having laid hands on Him in the Jordan, / he would be manifest as Prophet, / Preacher / and Forerunner of the Word of God.

Kondak to Mary Magdalen, Tone 3

Standing before the Cross of the Savior with many others, suffering with the Mother of the Lord and pouring forth tears, the all-glorious one made this offering as praise, saying: "What is this strange wonder? Is it Thy will to suffer, O Thou Who sustainest all creation? Glory to Thy dominion!"

Glory …
Kondak to Hieromartyr, Tone 6

Offering up sacrifices as a high priest, O father, in the end thou didst offer thyself as a living sacrifice, bearing witness lawfully to Christ God, accepting death and strengthened by angels, who cried out to thee: Come with us, O Phocas, and no one will be against us!

Now and ever ...
Theotokion, Tone 6

Protection of Christians not put to shame,/ unwavering Mediation before the Creator;/ despise not the prayer of sinners,/ but because you are good, quickly come to help us who call on you in faith./ Be swift to intercede and make haste to supplicate, Birth-Giver of God,/ who always protects those who honor you.

Epistles

Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans.

Deacon: Let us be attentive.

Reader: Brethren, having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.

Deacon: Let us be attentive.

Reader: Brethren, if I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. My defense to those who examine me is this: Do we have no right to eat and drink? Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working? Who ever goes to war at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock? Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain." Is it oxen God is concerned about? Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more?

Priest: Peace be with you.

Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Verse: Of Your mercies O Lord, I will sing forever; unto generation and generation I will proclaim Your Truth with my mouth.

Verse: You have said: Mercy will be established forever and My Truth will be prepared in the heavens.

Verse: With patience I waited patiently for the Lord, and He was attentive unto me, and He hearkened unto my supplication.

Communion Verses

Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the Highest. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
