Одного разу Ісус приплив в землю Гадаринську, що навпроти Галілеї. Коли ж Він вийшов на берег, зустрів Його один чоловік з міста, одержимий бісами з давнього часу, і в одяг не вдягався, і в домі не жив, а в гробах. Побачивши Ісуса, він закричав, упав перед Ним і гучним голосом сказав: що Тобі до мене, Ісусе, Сину Бога Всевишнього? благаю Тебе, не муч мене! Бо Ісус звелів нечистому духові вийти з цього чоловіка, тому що він довгий час мучив його; і в'язали його ланцюгами залізними і кайданами, і стерегли його, але він розривав ланцюги і гнав його біс у пустиню. Ісус запитав його: як твоє ім'я? Він сказав: легіон, бо багато бісів увійшло в нього. І вони просили Ісуса, щоб не повелів їм іти в безодню. Тут же на горі паслося велике стадо свиней: і біси просили Його, щоб дозволив їм увійти в них. І дозволив їм. Біси, вийшовши з чоловіка, увійшли в свиней, і кинулося стадо з кручі в озеро і потонуло. Пастухи, побачивши, що сталося, побігли і розказали в місті і по селах. І вийшли побачити, що сталось; і, прийшовши до Ісуса, знайшли чоловіка, з якого вийшли біси, одягненого і при своєму розумі, котрий сидів біля ніг Ісусових, і вжахнулись. А ті, що бачили, розповіли їм, як зцілився біснуватий. І весь народ краю Гадаринського просив Його відійти від них, бо їх охопив великий страх. Він увійшов у човен і вернувся. Чоловік же, з котрого вийшли біси, благав Його, щоб бути з Ним. Але Ісус відпустив його, сказавши: вернись у дім твій і розкажи, що сотворив тобі Бог. UOC of the USA Continues to Provide Care
for Those Suffering in Ukraine

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in an escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War that started in 2014. The invasion was the biggest attack on a European country since World War II, killing thousands of civilians and displacing millions.

The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, particular along the Russian border, has resulted in countless internally displaced people.  Many fled the violence leaving behind all their possessions and livelihoods.  They now find themselves in unknown cities, towns, and villages trying to survive the war.  The invasion has caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and critical utilities, leading to food and water insecurity for millions.  Healthcare facilities have been targeted, leaving people without access to the most basic medical care.  This is having a sever impact on the health of the population, particularly the most vulnerable groups such as the children and the elderly.

With the winter months quickly approaching, the children should be well into their school year, complaining about exams, while getting ready for a visit from St. Nicholas.  Parents should be eagerly shopping for gifts and preparing for the long winter months ahead by stocking up on non-perishable food, filling their larders with root vegetables, ensuring their homes are well isolated, and their animals have enough feed to get them through the winter.

Instead, the children struggle with their schoolwork.  While other youngsters their age are able to study remotely, many children in Ukraine have no access to technology, having left all their laptops, iPads, and mobile devices behind as they fled for their lives.  Without access to the latest teaching methods via the Internet, many children are struggling to keep up.

Instead of shopping for new clothes for their children, parents are struggling to keep clean what little clothing they have.  Without the availability of laundry machines, or any other common household appliances, the parents worry about providing their children with the most basic needs of cleanliness and a sense of normalcy.

Ukrainians have always been raised with a deep sense of family, and their Christian upbringing has nurtured a sense of responsibility for one another and love for their neighbors.  Before the vibrations of the first explosions 20 months ago subsided, the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA have stepped up and embraced the suffering civilians of Ukraine by donating funds and providing much needed supplies.

Working through Protopresbyter Kostyantyn Kuzyetzov of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, with the blessing of Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora, Archbishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy of the UOC of the USA and Consistory President, has been instrumental in providing much needed supplies to those who are suffering.  Thanks to Fr. Kostantyn, his wife Natalia, and their team's selfless and tireless determination and efforts to care for those in need, the Church has been able to minister to and aid the poorest of the poor.

Recently funds were sent to help bring a sense of normalcy to these people.  The most important segment of any society is its youth.  In order for the young to mature into responsible adults, they need to be provided tools to help with their education and growth.  To this end numerous tablets, such as iPads, were purchased and given to the students allowing them access to the technology they need to excel in their studies.  One such student was an honors student in high school who was preparing his paper for the upcoming Chemistry Olympiad, with hopes of one day becoming a physician.  Another was a young girl whose mother cried when she saw the broad smile on her daughter's face as she opened her iPad and logged on giggling that she would now be able to complete her assignments.

Younger children were pleased with their gifts of toys and chocolates, while their parents rejoiced at being provided with what most people take for granted – vacuum cleaners, washing machines, hot plates for cooking.  Now the children would not worry about wearing soiled clothes, nor eating cold food out of can, or how they would finish their studies.

Thousands of people are served daily with provisions of simple hygiene – soaps, shampoos, lotions, in addition to non-perishable food items, bottles of water, basic medicines such as aspirin and ibuprofen, combs, razors, etc.  All these things which most people take for granted are received with the utmost joy by the suffering and displaced Ukrainian families.

By providing them with food, cleanliness, and technology, the Church has cared for their lives, and their wellbeing.  However, our duty does not end there.  Sadly, many people are killed daily in airstrikes, bomb blasts, and by snipers.  Often their bodies lie where they fell until it is safe to retrieve them and return them to their families.  To accomplish this, whether civilian or military, the bodies are placed in body bags and prepared for transport.  There UOC of the USA has extended prayers and love to those who have lost their lives by providing funds for the purchase of body bags and refrigerated transport vehicles.

With Winter quickly approaching, the need for assistance will grow exponentially.  People will struggle to stay warm and to find enough food for themselves, their families, and their neighbors.  Coats, scarves, and mittens will need to be purchased, along with medicines, heaters, coal, etc.  The need is great.  Please consider helping by donating the St. John's Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief Fund that supports such mission.

Hieromartyr Zenobios and
his sister Zenobia, of Aegæ in Cilicia

The Hieromartyr Zenobius, Bishop of Aegea, and his sister Zenobia suffered a martyr's death in the year 285 in Cilicia. From childhood they were raised in the holy Christian Faith by their parents, and they led pious and chaste lives. In their mature years, shunning the love of money, they distributed away their inherited wealth giving it to the poor. For his beneficence and holy life the Lord rewarded Zenobius with the gift of healing various maladies. He was also chosen bishop of a Christian community in Cilicia.

As bishop, Saint Zenobius zealously spread the Christian Faith among the pagans. When the emperor Diocletian (284-305) began a persecution against Christians, Bishop Zenobius was the first one arrested and brought to trial to the governor Licius. "I shall only speak briefly with you," said Licius to the saint, "for I propose to grant you life if you worship our gods, or death, if you do not." The saint answered, "This present life without Christ is death. It is better that I prepare to endure the present torment for my Creator, and then with Him live eternally, than to renounce Him for the sake of the present life, and then be tormented eternally in Hades."

By order of Licius, they nailed him to a cross and began the torture. The bishop's sister, seeing him suffering, wanted to stop it. She bravely confessed her own faith in Christ before the governor, therefore, she also was tortured.

By the power of the Lord they remained alive after being placed on a red-hot iron bed, and then in a boiling kettle. The saints were then beheaded. The priest Hermogenes secretly buried the bodies of the martyrs in a single grave.

Священномученик Зіновій, єпископ Егейський, і сестра його Зіновія зазнали мученицької смерті 285 року в Кілікії. Вони з дитинства сприйняли святу християнську віру від своїх батьків і вели благочестиве, цнотливе життя. У зрілі роки, далекі від сріблолюбства, роздали вони своє майно, отримане у спадок, незаможним. За благодійність і святе життя Господь нагородив Зиновія даром зцілення різних хвороб. Він був обраний єпископом християнської громади в Кілікії.

Перебуваючи у святительському сані, святий Зіновій ревно поширював віру християнську серед язичників. Коли імператор Діоклетіан (284-305) почав гоніння на християн, єпископ Зіновій був першим схоплений і доставлений на суд до правителя Лісія. "Я буду говорити з тобою коротко, – сказав Лісій святителю. – Пропоную тобі: життя – якщо поклонишся нашим богам, і смерть – якщо не поклонишся". Святий відповів: "Це тимчасове життя без Христа не є життям, але смертю; я краще віддаю перевагу тимчасові муки за мого Творця, а потім із Ним вічно жити, ніж відмовитися від Нього заради тимчасового життя, а потім вічно мучитися в пеклі"…

За наказом Лісія святителя прибили до хреста і почали катувати. Сестра єпископа, бачачи страждання брата, побажала їх із ним розділити. Безстрашно сповідувала вона перед гонителями свою віру в Христа, за що також була віддана на муки. Силою Господньою святі, які залишилися живими після тортур, на розпеченому одрі й у киплячому казані, врешті решт святі були обезголовлені. Пресвітер Гермоген таємно віддав тіла святих мучеників похованню.

Преподобна Євтропія Херсонська

Місяця березня на 16-й день / жовтня на 30-й день – знайдення мощей

Преподобна Євтропія, в миру Катерина Леонтіївна Ісаєнкова, народилася 24 листопада 1863 року в селищі Біла Криниця Херсонської губернії в сім'ї Леонтія й Агафії.

У 12 років була взята на виховання жіночою чернечою громадою в Олешківській Слободі Таврійської губернії. У громаді сестер Катерина осягала грамоту й рукоділля, одночасно навчаючись молитві й читанню Слова Божого. Незабаром громада отримала статус Успенського гуртожительного монастиря, Катерина прийняла чернечий постриг із ім'ям на честь св. мучениці Євтропії Олександрійської. Її чернечим послухом було читання й спів на кліросі. Після революції монастир скасували, храми закрили, черниць розігнали.

Монахиня Євтропія, як і багато інших насельниць обителі, поїхала в Херсон, де оселилася в районі Кіндійських хуторів (нині п. Кіндійка), недалеко від храму Різдва Богородиці. Це місце було обрано невипадково. За Дніпром були улюблені матінкою Олешки, на той час перейменовані в Цюрупинськ.

Матінка заробляла тим, що шила ковдри. Постійно ходила в храм, де молилися й інші черниці Олешківського монастиря. У 1938 році храм закрили, після чого черниці збиралися в приватному будинку. Сестри дбали одна про одну й підтримували одна одну, чим могли.

Під час війни в Херсоні стали відкривати раніше закриті храми. У 1941 році відкрили і Кіндійську церкву. Кілька років матінка жила в приміщенні, що було в огорожі храму. Але, бажаючи більшої самоти, вона незабаром перебирається в невеликий будиночок, розташований недалеко від Кіндійської церкви. Поки були сили, вона співала й читала на кліросі. Коли стала немічною, сиділа на лавочці біля хору й молилася. Вона ніколи не пропускала богослужіння.

Жила вона в невеликій тимчасовій споруді. Житло було просте, мазана хатка – одна кімната і коридорчик. До матінки приходило багато людей, які почули про її прозорливість і сподівалися на силу її молитви, двір завжди був наповнений людьми. Матінка приймала всіх у себе в кімнаті, сидячи на маленькій лавочці біля свого ліжка. Але ніхто ніколи не бачив, щоб матінка лежала на ліжку, навіть якщо була хвора. За словами очевидців, біля неї завжди лежала чурочка. Коли матінка втомлювалася, вона клала чурочку на ліжко, й сидячи на лавці, клала голову на чурочку. Численні відвідувачі везли їй гостинці. Але вона звикла задовольнятися просфорами й святою водою. Тому приношення вона роздавала бідним, незаможним, або ж людям, які дали їй дах.

Духовні чада свідчили, що на ногах матінка носила вериги. В її руках завжди було Євангеліє, яке вона постійно читала. Іноді вона направляла своїх чад до отця Йосипа (прп. Амфілохія Почаївського), з яким також спілкувалася. Перебуваючи на спокої в Херсоні, сповідник віри архієпископ Іоанн (Лавриненко) також спілкувався з матінкою Євтропією.

Матінка Євтропія передбачила свою кончину, прощаючись з тими, кого знала. Померла 29 березня 1968 року, у віці 105 років. Відспівували матінку в Кіндійській церкві Різдва Пресвятої Богородиці при величезному скупченні вірян. Поховали матінку на Кіндійському кладовищі. На її могилі багато хто отримував для себе благодатну допомогу і зцілення.

12 листопада 2009 року були знайдені мощі черниці Євтропії, які були перенесені в Свято-Духівський кафедральний собор міста Херсона, де вони перебувають і понині.

Рішенням Священного Синоду Української Православної Церкви від 23 грудня 2010 року черниця Євтропія зарахована до лику місцевошанованих святих Херсонської єпархії. 9 серпня 2011 року в Свято-Духовському кафедральному соборі м. Херсона відбулася канонізація преподобної Євтропії Херсонської.

Ukrainian Orthodox League Thanksgiving Project

November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and also the month we commemorate the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine. The UOL National Executive Board has decided that our yearly recommended Thanksgiving Project will focus on bringing a greater awareness of the Holodomor while helping the hungry in our communities now and in the future. In our remembrance, we strive to combat hunger in the present.

Please donate non-perishable foods in the bin in the vestibule.  Each item will be labeled with a sticker that says:

Ukraine. We pray no one ever goes hungry again.
